Our Moroccan adventure has officially begun, and what a start it has been! Today, Jean-Pierre and I found ourselves wandering through the enchanting blue city of Chefchaouen. The air is crisp, the sky is clear, and the vibrant colours surrounding us are simply breathtaking. It feels like stepping into a dream, a world painted in every shade of azure imaginable.

The journey here was quite smooth. We flew from Montreal to Tangier, and then enjoyed a scenic drive to Chefchaouen. The landscape transformed from bustling cityscapes to rolling hills, offering glimpses of rural Moroccan life. I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement building with every kilometer we covered. It reminded me of our road trip through Tuscany years ago, the anticipation of discovering hidden gems around every corner.

Upon arriving at Maison D'hôtes Afassi, our charming hotel nestled in the heart of Chefchaouen, we were greeted with warm hospitality and a refreshing mint tea. The hotel is a haven of tranquility, its traditional Moroccan architecture blending seamlessly with the serene atmosphere of the city. After settling in, we eagerly set out to explore the legendary Medina.

A Morning Stroll Through the Medina

The Chefchaouen Medina is a labyrinth of narrow alleyways, each turn revealing a new vista of blue-washed buildings. The effect is mesmerizing. Sunlight filters through the winding streets, casting intricate shadows and highlighting the unique textures of the walls. Every doorway, every window frame, is a work of art. Jean-Pierre, with his architect's eye, was particularly captivated by the intricate details and the way the light played on the surfaces. I, of course, was snapping photos at every opportunity, trying to capture the essence of this magical place. It reminded me of the small streets in Arezzo, where I grew up, but with a unique, vibrant twist.

We started our day with breakfast at Cafe Clock. This place is a gem! Nestled in the Houta area of the Medina, the cafe is a vibrant cultural hub that blends traditional Moroccan aesthetics with a modern, welcoming atmosphere. The walls are painted in the same striking blue as the town, and accented with traditional Moroccan tiles and local artwork. We sat on the rooftop terrace, enjoying a traditional Moroccan breakfast of eggs, bread, and olives, all while soaking in the stunning views of the city. The cafe also offers cooking classes, which I'm seriously considering for later in the trip. I would love to learn how to make some authentic Moroccan dishes to bring back home to Montreal.

Jean-Pierre found a unique piece of pottery, a small tagine painted in vibrant shades of blue. The shopkeeper was incredibly friendly, sharing stories about the craftsmanship and the history behind each item. It's these personal interactions that truly enrich the travel experience.

Exploring the Historic Kasbah

In the afternoon, we visited the Kasbah, a historic fortress that stands proudly in the heart of Chefchaouen. Built in the 15th century, the Kasbah once served as a stronghold to protect the city from invaders. Today, it houses an ethnographic museum, showcasing traditional Moroccan artifacts, musical instruments, and weaponry.

Jean-Pierre was intrigued by the collection of ancient weapons, imagining the battles that once took place within these walls.

For lunch, we stopped at Le Coin, a charming restaurant that offered a mix of Moroccan and European cuisine. Jean-Pierre opted for a traditional tagine, while I chose a delicious vegetarian pizza. As we savored our meal, we watched the locals go about their daily lives, children playing in the square and artisans showcasing their crafts.

After dinner, we strolled through the Medina one last time, soaking in the ambiance of the blue city at night. The streets were quieter now, the shops closed, but the magic remained. The soft glow of the streetlights illuminated the blue walls, creating a serene and ethereal atmosphere. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Ras El Ma, a natural spring where the locals gather to collect water, and the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen for a deeper dive into the region's history. We're also hoping to find a cozy spot to enjoy the sunset with a refreshing drink.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. Chefchaouen has captured my heart with its beauty, its culture, and its warm hospitality. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings! The city truly is a pearl.
