Exploring Chefchaouen's Charms
Today was a delightful immersion into the heart of Chefchaouen, a day filled with the soothing sounds of water, captivating cultural insights, and the warm hues of a Moroccan sunset. It’s amazing how much this blue city continues to surprise and enchant me at every turn. Jean-Pierre and I set out with a sense of eager anticipation, ready to discover more of what this unique destination has to offer.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Tissemlal. The restaurant is part of the Casa Hassan Hotel. We enjoyed a traditional Moroccan breakfast, known as *ftour beldi*, consisting of fresh eggs and local goat cheese accompanied by traditional bread. The ambiance was cozy, with the option of dining by a fireplace or on a terrace offering scenic views. It was the perfect start to fuel our explorations.

Ras El Ma: A Refreshing Oasis
After breakfast, we ventured towards Ras El Ma, a natural spring and waterfall located just beyond the northeastern gate of the medina. The walk itself was a treat, as we passed through the charming blue alleys of Chefchaouen. The sound of flowing water grew louder as we approached, creating a sense of anticipation.

Ras El Ma, which translates to Head of Water in Arabic, is a vital water source for the town. The water emerges from the mountains, cascading over rocks and forming small waterfalls. It’s not just a tourist spot; it’s a place where locals gather to wash clothes and collect water, offering a glimpse into daily Moroccan life.
The area was surprisingly lush, with greenery surrounding the waterfalls. We spent some time simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the soothing sound of the water. It was a refreshing escape from the bustling medina. I even spotted a few locals doing their laundry in the stream, a timeless scene that felt both authentic and charming. Jean-Pierre, ever the architect, was fascinated by the way the water was channeled and used by the community. He mused about the ingenuity of traditional designs and how they harmonized with the natural landscape.
The true beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the vibrant culture and everyday life that unfolds within them.
Delving into Local Culture: The Ethnographic Museum
Next on our itinerary was the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen, housed within the Kasbah. The Kasbah itself is a historic fortress built in the 15th century, offering a glimpse into the city's past. The museum is located within the left wing of the Kasbah.

The museum provided a fascinating insight into the culture and history of the Chefchaouen region. The exhibits featured a collection of ethnographic objects, including traditional costumes, jewelry, musical instruments, and ancient weapons. Each artifact told a story, reflecting the daily life and local traditions of the Berber, Arab, and Andalusian cultures that have influenced the region.
I was particularly drawn to the displays of traditional clothing, admiring the intricate embroidery and vibrant colors. Jean-Pierre, with his keen eye for detail, appreciated the craftsmanship of the musical instruments and the historical significance of the ancient weapons. The museum also organizes cultural events and workshops, offering visitors a chance to deepen their knowledge of local culture.
A Culinary Journey: Lunch at Restaurant Triana
For lunch, we chose Restaurant Triana, known for its blend of Italian and Mediterranean cuisines. The restaurant boasts a nice decor and a calm atmosphere. We started with a refreshing seafood salad, followed by a flavorful lamb tagine, cooked to perfection with aromatic spices. Jean-Pierre savored a delicious octopus dish, while I enjoyed a delightful cheesecake for dessert.

The service was excellent, and the staff were friendly and attentive. The prices were reasonable, and the overall ambiance was relaxing. It was the perfect place to unwind and recharge after our morning explorations. We lingered over our mint tea, enjoying the views of the Kasbah Museum and the bustling square.
Sunset at Sunset: A Perfect Ending
As the day drew to a close, we decided to experience the highly recommended Sunset at Sunset bar. Fortunately, we arrived early enough to secure a prime spot to watch the sun dip below the horizon. With a refreshing drink in hand, we watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of warm colors, casting a magical glow over the blue city. It was the perfect way to end a day of discovery in Chefchaouen. I made sure to capture the moment, taking several photos of the stunning view. It’s moments like these that make traveling so rewarding, and I am so glad to be sharing them with Jean-Pierre.
