Exploring the Cultural Charms of Hoi An with Family
Day 7: A Day of Culture and Crafts in Hoi An's Ancient Town
Discover Hoi An's captivating history, vibrant lantern-making, and delightful local cuisine in a day filled with cultural immersion.
Lanterns, History, and Flavors of Hoi An
Today was a beautiful immersion into the heart of Hoi An. From exploring ancient streets to crafting colorful lanterns and savoring local delicacies, every moment felt like stepping deeper into the soul of this Vietnamese gem. It's a day I'll cherish, filled with the sights, sounds, and flavors that make Hoi An so unique.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Red Gecko Restaurant. David opted for a traditional Vietnamese coffee, while Thandi enjoyed some fresh fruit. I decided on a bowl of Pho, a fragrant noodle soup that was the perfect start to a day of exploring. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming.
With our appetites satisfied, we ventured into the heart of Hoi An's Ancient Town. The entrance to the old town itself was an experience, a gateway into a world where time seemed to slow down. The vibrant colors of the buildings, the intricate architecture, and the bustling streets created a sensory feast. To enter the Ancient Town, visitors need to purchase a ticket for about 120,000 VND, which helps to preserve the town. This ticket grants access to several attractions within the town. Wandering through the streets, we were immediately captivated by the town's unique charm.

Our first stop was the Hoi An Museum, a treasure trove of the town's history and culture. Thandi was particularly fascinated by the exhibits showcasing artifacts from the Sa Huynh culture, the earliest inhabitants of the area. The museum provided a comprehensive look at Hoi An's development through various periods, from its time as a bustling trading port to its more recent history. I found myself engrossed in the stories of the merchants who once flocked to this town, leaving their mark on its architecture and culture. The Hoi An Museum is home to thousands of artifacts and historical documents. The building that houses the museum was renovated in 2019 to provide better spaces for historical artifacts.

After immersing ourselves in history, we decided to try our hand at a more creative pursuit: lantern making. We visited the Hoi An Lantern Company, where we were greeted by a team of skilled artisans. Thandi's eyes lit up as she saw the colorful silk fabrics and bamboo frames. We learned about the different types of lanterns and the symbolism behind their designs. With the help of the artisans, we each created our own lantern, carefully selecting the fabrics and patterns. It was a fun and rewarding experience, and we left with beautiful souvenirs that we'll treasure for years to come.

By lunchtime, we were ready for another culinary adventure. We headed to Bun Cha Ta Hoi An, a restaurant known for its delicious Bun Cha, a traditional Hanoi specialty. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to savor this iconic dish. The Bun Cha consisted of grilled pork meatballs and slices of pork belly, served with rice noodles, fresh herbs, and a flavorful dipping sauce. It was a delightful combination of flavors and textures, and we quickly devoured our portions. The owner, Katy, was incredibly warm and welcoming, guiding us through the proper way to eat Bun Cha.

As the afternoon wore on, we continued to explore the Ancient Town, soaking in its unique atmosphere. The cooler temperatures in December made it comfortable to walk and cycle. The colorful lanterns that adorned the streets added a touch of magic to the scene. We visited some of the town's historic houses, each with its own story to tell. Thandi enjoyed watching the street performers and playing with the local children.
For dinner, we chose Nhan's Kitchen, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine and warm hospitality. The menu featured a variety of traditional favorites, and we decided to try a few new dishes. I opted for the Cao Lau, a local noodle dish with a unique flavor. David chose the Mi Quang, another regional specialty. Thandi, ever adventurous, tried the white rose dumplings. Each dish was a culinary masterpiece, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients and the chef's skillful touch. The staff at Nhan's Kitchen were incredibly attentive, making us feel like honored guests.

The December weather in Hoi An has been mild and comfortable, with average temperatures ranging from 19°C to 26°C. While there has been occasional rainfall, it has been lighter compared to other months. Packing a light jacket and umbrella is a good idea. There are also festive events and celebrations during December, including Christmas and New Year's Eve.
As we walked back to our resort, the Hadana Boutique Resort Hoi An, the streets were alive with the glow of lanterns. The air was filled with the sounds of music and laughter. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.
