Day 9: A Day of Discovery in Hoi An's Ancient Town
Immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of Hoi An Ancient Town, exploring its cultural treasures and savoring local flavors.
Timeless Charms of Hoi An
Today, Hoi An unfolded before us in all its radiant glory. From the tantalizing aromas of local cuisine to the intricate craftsmanship of handmade jewelry, every corner held a new adventure. Thandi's eyes sparkled with curiosity, David captured every moment with his camera, and I found myself lost in the enchanting atmosphere of this ancient town.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Tan Phat Restaurant - Hoi An. The warm hospitality made us feel right at home, and the fresh ingredients elevated the traditional Vietnamese dishes to new heights. Thandi especially loved the *bánh mì*, declaring it the best sandwich she's ever had—a bold statement from a six-year-old with a penchant for picky eating! David and I savored the local coffee, strong and sweet, a perfect start to a day of exploration.

Fueled and ready, we ventured into the heart of Phố cổ Hội An, the Ancient Town itself. The streets, adorned with colorful lanterns, exuded a timeless charm. The architecture, a blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese influences, told stories of centuries past. We strolled along the Thu Bon River, watching the boats glide by, each carrying its own tale. The air was filled with the sounds of daily life – the chatter of vendors, the laughter of children, and the gentle strumming of a musician playing traditional Vietnamese melodies.

In the heart of Hoi An, time seems to slow, allowing you to savor every moment and connect with the rich tapestry of its history and culture.
Next on our itinerary was The Timeless Hoi An, a place that truly lived up to its name. It was a serene escape from the bustling streets, a place where we could rest and soak in the atmosphere. Thandi loved looking at the books and artwork, while David appreciated the quiet ambiance. It was a perfect spot to recharge before diving back into our adventure.

Lunch at Hong Phuc 2 was an absolute treat. This restaurant, nestled in the heart of the Ancient Town, offered a menu brimming with local delicacies. I decided to try the Cao Lau, a regional noodle dish, and it was a burst of flavors—savory, sweet, and utterly satisfying. David opted for the white rose dumplings, another Hoi An specialty, and was equally impressed. Thandi, ever adventurous, tried a bit of both and gave them a thumbs up, a rare and cherished moment for us!

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at Lotus Leaf Fine Arts & Jewellery. This wasn't just any store; it was a family-run business where you could create your own unique jewelry pieces. Thandi was immediately captivated, wanting to make a ring for her best friend back home. The owners, Hoa Luu Van and his wife Trâm, were incredibly welcoming and patient, guiding us through the process with warmth and expertise. Thandi carefully selected her beads and charms, her brow furrowed in concentration. In the end, she created a beautiful little ring, a perfect memento of our time in Hoi An.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we found ourselves at Restaurant & Cafe Tuấn Rich Flavor of Hoi An Vietnamese Familly Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant lived up to its name, offering a rich and authentic taste of Vietnamese family cuisine. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the food was simply divine. We shared stories and laughter over plates of fresh seafood and fragrant rice dishes, feeling grateful for the experiences we were sharing as a family.

Walking back to our resort, the Hadana Boutique Resort HoiAn (former Belle Maison Hadana HoiAn), the town was awash with the soft glow of lanterns. The December air was mild, carrying the scent of incense and street food. Hoi An at night is truly magical, a scene straight out of a fairy tale. We held hands, Thandi nestled between us, feeling content and blessed.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Rừng Dừa Bảy Mẫu Hội An - Làng Quê (Bay Mau Coconut Forest) and wander through the Phố Đi Bộ Hội An (Hoi An Walking Street). We’re also hoping to enjoy a drink at the Woop Woop Bar. I’m excited to see what other hidden gems Hoi An has in store for us. For now, I'm signing off, filled with memories of a day well-spent in this enchanting ancient town.
As I reflect on our day, I realize that Hoi An is more than just a beautiful destination; it's an experience that touches the soul. It's a place where you can slow down, connect with the past, and appreciate the simple joys of life. And as a mother and a wife, that's exactly what I was hoping to find on this journey with my family. I am so glad that I decided to share this journey with you all!
I am also so glad that I decided to start this blog. As someone who grew up in Chilumba, Malawi, I never imagined that I would be traveling the world and sharing my experiences with others. It's a dream come true, and I am so grateful for every moment.
In other news, I've been thinking a lot about my work with the local charity back in Bristol. Community outreach is so important, and I miss being there. I am looking forward to getting back and continuing to make a difference. It’s always difficult to balance my passions with my responsibilities, but I know that I can do it with the support of my loving family and friends.
Until tomorrow!
