Family Adventure in the Heart of Cusco
Day 2: Ancient Echoes and Modern Delights: A Day Exploring Cusco's Heights
Discover the historical wonders of Saqsaywaman & the artistic charm of San Blas in Cusco. A day of breathtaking views and cultural immersion.
Whispers of the Past, Visions of Today
Today was a day of reaching new heights, both literally and figuratively, as we delved deeper into the heart of Cusco. From the imposing ruins of Saqsaywaman to the bohemian vibes of San Blas, every moment was filled with awe and wonder. It’s incredible how this city seamlessly blends its rich Incan heritage with a vibrant modern culture.
Explore Saqsaywaman, an ancient Incan fortress near Cusco, Peru, renowned for its monumental stone structures and rich cultural history.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Green Point Vegan Restaurant. It might seem odd for someone who grew up on *nsima* and relish to choose a vegan spot, but I’m always open to new culinary experiences. Plus, it was a great way to start the day feeling light and energized for our upcoming adventures.

First on the agenda was Saqsaywaman. As we approached the site, the sheer scale of the stonework was breathtaking. I mean, I had seen pictures, but nothing prepares you for standing in the presence of these colossal stones, each one perfectly fitted without the use of mortar. Thandi was especially fascinated, running her little hands along the surfaces, trying to imagine how the Incas managed to move and place them with such precision. David, ever the pragmatist, was busy snapping photos from every angle, trying to capture the immensity of it all.
Our guide explained that Saqsaywaman, meaning ‘Royal Eagle’, wasn't just a fortress but also a temple and a storage depot. It played a crucial role in Inca ceremonies and even served as a military stronghold during the Spanish conquest. I couldn't help but imagine the fierce battles that took place here, the clash of cultures, and the resilience of the Inca people. It's humbling to stand on ground that holds so much history.
The stones of Saqsaywaman whisper tales of ingenuity, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Inca civilization.
After exploring Saqsaywaman, we made our way to the San Blas View Point. The walk itself was an adventure, navigating the narrow, cobbled streets of the San Blas neighborhood. This area is known as the artisan district, and it's easy to see why. Every corner seemed to house a gallery, a workshop, or a quaint little café. The air was filled with the scent of freshly brewed coffee and the sounds of artists at work.

Reaching the viewpoint, we were rewarded with a panoramic vista of Cusco. From here, you could see the red-tiled roofs of the city stretching out towards the surrounding mountains. The setting sun cast a golden glow over everything, making it feel like we were standing in a postcard. Thandi pointed out the Plaza de Armas, where we had spent the previous day, and David tried to identify the various churches and historical buildings.
For lunch, we decided to try Pachapapa, a restaurant known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with an outdoor patio adorned with colorful textiles and twinkling lights. I opted for the *cuy al horno*, a local delicacy (guinea pig), while David tried the *lomo saltado*. Thandi, being a bit less adventurous, stuck with a simple but delicious chicken dish. It was a delightful meal, and the perfect way to refuel after our morning of exploration. Pachapapa is located in the San Blas neighborhood, just opposite the cute little church of Iglesia de San Blas.

In the evening, after putting Thandi to bed, David and I ventured out to LIMBUS RESTOBAR. I had heard so much about its stunning views and craft beers, and I was eager to experience it for myself. The climb up to the bar was a bit steep, but the effort was well worth it. The view from the terrace was simply breathtaking. Cusco glittered below us, a sea of lights against the dark silhouette of the mountains.

We ordered a couple of their experimental cocktails and settled in to enjoy the ambiance. The bar had a lively, yet relaxed vibe, with a mix of locals and tourists all soaking in the view. The bartenders were friendly and attentive, and the music was just the right volume. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. Sipping on my drink, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to experience the magic of Cusco with my family.
As we prepare for tomorrow, I'm excited to explore more of what Cusco has to offer. Our itinerary includes a visit to Tambomachay and Q'enco Archaeological Complex, which I'm sure will be just as fascinating as today's adventures. We'll also be trying out El Mesón de Don Tomas for breakfast, Uchu Peruvian Steakhouse for lunch, and Cicciolina for dinner. And of course, we'll be making a stop at the Handicraft Center Cusco to pick up some souvenirs.
Before heading back to the hotel, we took one last look at the city below. The air was crisp and cool, and the stars were beginning to emerge in the night sky. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. Cusco, you have truly captured my heart.
I’m finding that travel isn’t just about seeing new places; it’s about experiencing new things, connecting with different cultures, and creating lasting memories with the people you love. And so far, this family adventure in Cusco has been nothing short of extraordinary. I am so grateful that I can share this journey with David and Thandi, creating memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. Being able to share these experiences with all of you makes it even more special.
Back in Bristol, I often find myself caught up in the routine of daily life, the demands of my job, and the responsibilities of being a wife and mother. But moments like these remind me of the importance of stepping outside of that routine, of embracing the unknown, and of seeking out new adventures. It’s a lesson I hope to carry with me long after we’ve left Cusco.
And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I can’t help but wonder what tomorrow will bring. What new discoveries await us? What new connections will we make? What new stories will we have to tell? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: I’m ready for whatever adventures lie ahead.
I’m also reminded of the importance of sustainable tourism. As we explore these incredible places, it’s crucial that we do so in a way that respects the local culture and protects the environment. I’m committed to making responsible choices and supporting businesses that prioritize sustainability. It’s a small way of giving back to the communities that have welcomed us with open arms.
I encourage all of you to consider your impact as travelers. Choose eco-friendly accommodations, support local businesses, and be mindful of your consumption. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that these beautiful places remain for generations to come.
One thing that struck me today was the incredible sense of community in Cusco. Despite the influx of tourists, the city has managed to maintain its authentic character and its strong sense of identity. The people here are proud of their heritage, and they are eager to share it with visitors. It’s a reminder that travel is not just about seeing the sights but also about connecting with the people who call these places home.
I'm also thinking about the work I do back in Bristol as a Community Outreach Coordinator. It's so different from traveling the world, but in many ways, it's the same. Both involve connecting with people, building relationships, and making a positive impact on the world. Whether I'm organizing a community event in Bristol or exploring ancient ruins in Cusco, my goal is always the same: to create meaningful connections and to make the world a better place.
And now, as the day comes to a close, I want to express my gratitude to all of you for joining me on this journey. Your comments, your messages, and your support mean the world to me. It's an honor to share my experiences with you, and I hope that my stories inspire you to embark on your own adventures.
Until tomorrow, *kwenda bwino* (go well), from Cusco!
