Whispers of the Past, Tastes of the Present
Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Cusco, a city that effortlessly blends its rich Incan heritage with its vibrant colonial present. It’s amazing how much history and culture can be packed into a single day, and I was eager to soak it all in with my family.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Ceviche Seafood Kitchen.
I opted for the 'El Trio', a delightful combination of ceviche, seafood risotto, and fried seafood. David enjoyed the shrimp ceviche, while Thandi was thrilled with the special kids' menu they offered.
The restaurant’s bright and modern atmosphere, coupled with its prime location near Plaza de Armas, made it the perfect spot to start our day. The staff was incredibly welcoming, even providing Thandi with coloring materials, which kept her happily occupied while David and I savored our meals.
It’s these little touches that make traveling with family so special, and I am grateful for the warm hospitality we encountered.
With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set off to explore the Inka Museum. Housed in the grand Casa del Almirante, a colonial-era building built upon Incan foundations, the museum promised a journey through the history of the Inca civilization.
As we walked through the museum's halls, I was struck by the sheer ingenuity and artistry of the Inca people. From intricate textiles and delicate pottery to impressive metalwork and stonework, the artifacts on display offered a glimpse into a sophisticated society that thrived centuries ago.
Thandi was particularly fascinated by the miniature replicas of Machu Picchu and Choquequirao, peppering us with questions about the people who built these magnificent sites.
The museum also had a display of mummies, which, while a bit macabre, provided a tangible connection to the past.
It was a sobering reminder of the lives lived and the stories untold.

Leaving the museum, we made our way to the Cusco Cathedral, a towering structure that dominates the Plaza de Armas. Built on the site of an ancient Inca temple, the cathedral is a testament to the complex and often tumultuous history of Cusco.
Its construction began in 1559 and took nearly a century to complete, with Inca laborers using stones from the Sacsayhuamán fortress. As we stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the cathedral's grandeur.
The soaring ceilings, intricate carvings, and stunning stained-glass windows created an atmosphere of reverence and awe.
The cathedral is actually made up of three distinct structures including the Iglesia del Triunfo and the Sagrada Familia. The art inside, much of it from the Cusqueña School, blended European techniques with indigenous motifs, creating a unique and compelling visual language.
One of the most famous pieces is a painting of the Last Supper featuring a guinea pig, a local delicacy, as the main course. It was a fascinating example of cultural fusion and adaptation.
Exploring the cathedral with Thandi was an adventure in itself. She was mesmerized by the statues of saints and angels, and I found myself explaining the stories behind the biblical scenes depicted in the artwork.
It was a reminder of the power of art to transcend time and culture, and I was grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my daughter.

After our visit to the cathedral, our stomachs started to rumble, signaling it was time for lunch. We headed to KUSYKAY Peruvian Craft Food, a restaurant known for its innovative takes on traditional Peruvian dishes.
I had read rave reviews about their use of local, organic ingredients, and I was eager to try their cuisine. The restaurant's atmosphere was warm and inviting, with indigenous-themed paintings adorning the walls.
I opted for the Trucha Andina, an Andean trout dish served with broccoli puree and elderberry sauce. David chose the vegetable ceviche, while Thandi enjoyed a simple but delicious pasta dish.
The food was artfully presented and bursting with flavor, living up to all expectations. The service was impeccable, with the staff going out of their way to make us feel welcome.
We even received a complimentary tea to take home, a thoughtful gesture that I appreciated.

With the afternoon sun casting a golden glow over Cusco, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Inka's Expression. I was on the hunt for authentic Peruvian souvenirs to bring back home to Bristol.
The store was a treasure trove of handmade crafts, from colorful textiles and intricate pottery to delicate jewelry and unique artisan pieces. I was immediately drawn to a hand-woven blanket with vibrant geometric patterns, a perfect addition to our living room back home.
Thandi, of course, had her eyes set on a cuddly alpaca plush toy. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and origins of each item, enhancing the shopping experience.
I ended up buying several gifts for friends and family, including a beautiful silver pendant for my mother and a set of hand-painted ceramic bowls for my sister.
Supporting local artisans and bringing a piece of Peru back home felt incredibly rewarding.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Tunupa Restaurant for dinner. Located in the heart of the city, the restaurant offered stunning views of the Plaza de Armas and the Cusco Cathedral.
But Tunupa wasn't just about the view; it was also about the experience.
We were treated to a traditional Andean music and dance show while we dined. The vibrant costumes, lively music, and energetic dances provided a captivating glimpse into Peruvian culture.
Thandi was enthralled by the performers, clapping her hands and swaying to the rhythm of the music. The food was equally impressive, with a wide selection of traditional Peruvian dishes to choose from.
I opted for the alpaca steak, while David chose the causa. Thandi, never one to shy away from new experiences, tried a bit of everything. The meal was a fitting end to a day of cultural immersion, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for the beauty and diversity of Peru.

Reflecting on the day, I was struck by the seamless blend of old and new that defines Cusco. The city is a living museum, where ancient Incan ruins stand alongside colonial-era architecture, and where traditional customs coexist with modern life.
It's a place where you can wander through ancient temples, marvel at colonial cathedrals, savor authentic Peruvian cuisine, and shop for unique souvenirs, all in a single day.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family, and I know that the memories we made today will stay with us for years to come.
Tomorrow, we’re venturing further into the Sacred Valley to explore Moray and the Salt Mines of Maras. I am excited to see more of the Peruvian countryside and uncover more of its hidden treasures. I’m particularly looking forward to visiting the Salt Mines, as I’ve heard they are a truly unique and unforgettable sight. I’m also excited to try out the Black Cat Bar Cusco in the evening, I hear their cocktails are amazing!
Until then, goodnight from Cusco!
