Family Adventure in Chiang Mai: Exploring Culture and Nature
Day 9: A Night of Markets and Memories in Chiang Mai
Exploring Chiang Mai's vibrant night markets, savoring local flavors, and creating unforgettable memories with family in Thailand.
Market Magic and Culinary Delights
Today was a day dedicated to immersing ourselves in the vibrant energy of Chiang Mai's night markets and indulging in the local cuisine. It's hard to believe that our adventure is drawing to a close, but we're determined to soak up every last bit of this beautiful city. From bustling markets to delicious restaurants, Chiang Mai has truly captured our hearts.
We started our day with a hearty breakfast at Eing Restaurant. The atmosphere was lovely, and the food gave us the perfect energy boost for a day of exploring. Thandi was particularly excited about the pancakes, and David enjoyed a traditional Thai breakfast. I opted for something a little lighter, knowing we had a day full of eating ahead of us.

Our first stop was Ton Phayom Fresh Market. What a sensory overload! The market was bursting with colors, smells, and sounds. From exotic fruits I'd never seen before to the enticing aroma of spices, it was a true feast for the senses. I was particularly fascinated by the variety of mangoes; I learned that the yellow mangoes are amato mio's favorite. We picked up some fresh snacks for Thandi and a few ingredients to try my hand at a Malawian-Thai fusion dish when we get back home. It reminded me of the markets back in Chilumba, Malawi, though much more vibrant and diverse. It's amazing how markets, no matter where you are in the world, always hold a special energy.

The best memories are made when gathered around a table, sharing food and laughter with loved ones.
For lunch, we decided on Bodhi Terrace, drawn in by the promise of authentic Thai cuisine in a beautiful setting. The restaurant lived up to its reputation. Set beside the river, under a magnificent old tree, it was the perfect place to relax and enjoy a delicious meal. The food was exceptional. David raved about the *moo hong*, slow-braised pork belly in dark soy, star anise, and cinnamon. Thandi enjoyed some noodles, and I tried a fragrant curry that was both spicy and comforting. The service was also impeccable, with Khun Noey making us feel particularly welcome.

As evening approached, we ventured into the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar. The market was a whirlwind of activity, with vendors selling everything from handicrafts to clothing. Thandi was mesmerized by the colorful displays, and David was on the hunt for souvenirs. I found a beautiful hand-painted silk scarf that will remind me of our time here. Despite the crowds, there was a palpable sense of excitement and energy. It was hard to resist the urge to buy everything in sight!

Next up was the Tha Phae Walking Street. It comes alive every Sunday, transforming into a bustling hub of local culture, art, and cuisine. We strolled along, taking in the sights and sounds. There were street performers, musicians, and artists showcasing their talents. The air was filled with the aroma of street food, and we couldn't resist sampling some *khao soi*, a northern Thai curry noodle dish. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the markets.

For dinner, we opted for Jacky Show Restaurant, a French gastronomic gem. It felt like stepping into a cozy French home. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff made us feel like cherished guests. The food was exquisite, a delightful fusion of French techniques and local ingredients. David was particularly impressed with the French onion soup, and I savored a perfectly cooked fish dish. Thandi, surprisingly, enjoyed the *crème brûlée*. It was a delightful end to a day filled with Thai flavors.

As we walked back to Sri-Pat Guesthouse, Thandi was already fast asleep in David's arms. It's moments like these that make traveling with family so special. We're creating memories that will last a lifetime. I am so happy to be sharing these experiences with my family. It reminds me of my childhood in Malawi, surrounded by the warmth of family and community.

Tomorrow is our last day in Chiang Mai, and we plan to make the most of it. We're going to visit the Museum of World Insects and Natural Wonders and explore Baan Kang Wat, an artisan village. We'll also be sure to sample some more local cuisine at Thai Akha Kitchen, Tong Tem Toh, and Mr. KAI Restaurant. I'm already feeling a little sad about leaving, but I know we'll carry the spirit of Chiang Mai with us wherever we go.
I also learned that the ChiangMai Half Marathon 2025 was held today. It's wonderful to see the community engaging in healthy activities. Perhaps next time we visit, we can participate!
Even though we forgot to pack our rain ponchos and travel adapters, this trip has been incredible. I am so glad we decided to come to Chiang Mai.
Goodnight from Chiang Mai.
