A Day of Serenity and Heights
Today was a day of embracing the natural wonders around Livingstonia. I woke up with a sense of excitement, eager to explore more of what this beautiful region has to offer.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at DOVES EATERY. I enjoyed a traditional Malawian breakfast of Mandasi (fried dough) and sweet, milky tea. Fuelled and ready, I set off for Mphizi Hot Springs. The journey itself was an adventure, a scenic drive through the undulating landscapes of northern Malawi. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the promise of a beautiful day. The drive to Mphizi Hot Springs was about 14 kilometers northeast from Livingstonia, and I made sure to keep an eye out for the signposts. The roads can be a bit rough, so I was glad I had comfortable shoes for the drive.
As I arrived at Mphizi Hot Springs, I was immediately struck by the tranquility of the place. The springs are nestled amidst lush greenery, creating a serene oasis. The air was filled with the gentle sounds of nature – birds chirping, leaves rustling, and the soft murmur of the warm, mineral-rich waters. I could already feel the stresses of everyday life melting away.
I spent a couple of hours soaking in the hot springs, letting the therapeutic waters work their magic. The water was wonderfully warm, and I could feel it soothing my muscles and calming my mind. It was incredibly relaxing to sit there, surrounded by nature, and simply be present in the moment. I chatted with a few locals who were also enjoying the springs, learning about the history and cultural significance of the place. They shared stories of how the springs have been used for generations for healing and rejuvenation.
Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.
After my rejuvenating soak, I decided to visit OBASANJO SHOP to pick up a few souvenirs. I found some beautiful handmade crafts, including woven baskets and colorful fabrics, perfect reminders of my time in Livingstonia. Supporting local artisans is something I always try to do when I travel, and it felt good to contribute to the community in this small way. I even found a small, intricately carved wooden hippo for Thandi, which I knew she would adore.

For lunch, I had a simple but satisfying meal at the Livingstonia technical college café. It was a great place to mingle with students and experience the local atmosphere. I opted for Nsima with relish, a staple Malawian dish that always hits the spot. The Nsima was perfectly cooked, and the relish was flavorful and spicy, giving me the energy I needed for the next part of my adventure.

Next on the agenda was the Chombe Plateau. I knew this would be a highlight of the day, and I was eager to see the panoramic views I had heard so much about. The plateau is located near Mount Waller, and the hike is known for its stunning landscapes and diverse flora and fauna. I started my hike, which was moderately challenging but incredibly rewarding. The trail wound through small villages, giving me a glimpse into the daily lives of the local people. Children waved and smiled as I passed, their joyful energy infectious.

As I ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking. The lush greenery stretched out before me, and I could see Lake Malawi shimmering in the distance. The air was fresh and invigorating, and I felt a sense of accomplishment with each step I took. The Chombe Plateau is not only a hiking area but also a place of spiritual and sacred meaning to the local community. I learned that the plateau offers 360-degree views of Lake Malawi, Nyika National Park, and the surrounding mountain ranges of Tanzania. I made sure to pack essentials for the hike, including water and snacks, as facilities are limited.
Reaching the top of the Chombe Plateau was an awe-inspiring moment. The panoramic views were even more spectacular than I had imagined. Lake Malawi stretched out like a vast, sparkling ocean, and I could see the distant mountains of Tanzania and Mozambique on the horizon. It was a clear day, and the visibility was incredible. I spent a long time simply taking in the view, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such natural beauty. The plateau is a premier hiking area with trails catering to different skill levels, from leisurely strolls to challenging hikes. I found a quiet spot to sit and reflect, journaling about my experiences and capturing the essence of the landscape in my words.
As the sun began to set, I started my descent from the plateau, the sky painted with hues of orange, pink, and purple. The cooler months are the best time to visit Chombe Plateau for hiking, and I was lucky to have chosen such a perfect day. The stunning sunrises and sunsets over the plateau are sights you won't want to miss, and I felt privileged to have experienced such a perfect moment.
For dinner, I decided to try a local restaurant in Livingstonia, eager to sample more of the authentic Malawian cuisine. I ordered Kondowole, a traditional dish made from cassava flour and served with various stews. It was a delicious and satisfying end to a day filled with exploration and adventure.

The warmth of the Mphizi Hot Springs, the breathtaking views from the Chombe Plateau, and the simple joys of everyday life in Livingstonia had all combined to create an unforgettable experience. I am so grateful for the opportunity to explore my birth country and share its beauty with the world. I am also looking forward to tomorrow, where I will be visiting the Lake Malawi National Park Visitors Center and the Livingstonia Mission Church. It promises to be another day filled with history, culture, and natural beauty. I am particularly excited to learn more about the history of the Livingstonia Mission Church and its role in the development of the region.

The air is so fresh and clean here; it reminds me of the simple life I had growing up in Chilumba. It makes me think about Thandi and how much I want her to experience this beauty and simplicity someday. Maybe next year, David and Thandi can join me, and we can explore Malawi together. Until then, I will continue to share my experiences and inspire others to discover the warm heart of Africa.
