Finding Oasis at Akchour Waterfalls

Today was all about escaping the blue embrace of Chefchaouen and venturing into the verdant Rif Mountains. I was eager to discover the natural beauty that lay just beyond the city's borders. The promise of cascading waterfalls and lush landscapes was too alluring to resist. I was looking forward to a day of hiking and connecting with nature.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant populaire. It was a delightful start to the day, fueling me up for the adventures ahead. After breakfast, I hopped on a local bus heading towards Akchour. The ride itself was a treat, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the countryside. The air grew crisper, and the scenery shifted from blue-washed buildings to rolling hills dotted with olive groves.

Upon arriving at Akchour, I was immediately struck by the difference in atmosphere. The air was fresh and clean, filled with the sound of rushing water and birdsong. I paid a small entry fee and began my trek towards the waterfalls. The trail was well-maintained, but sturdy shoes were definitely a must. As I walked, I passed small stalls selling local crafts and refreshing drinks. The vendors were friendly and welcoming, adding to the charm of the experience.

The hike to the first waterfall, Cascades d'Akchour, was relatively easy, taking me through a shaded path alongside the Akchour River. The vegetation was lush and green, a stark contrast to the arid landscapes I had seen elsewhere in Morocco. The sound of the water grew louder as I approached, and soon I caught my first glimpse of the falls. The water cascaded down a series of rocks, creating a refreshing spray that cooled the air. I paused here for a while, taking in the beauty of the surroundings and snapping a few photos.

Feeling invigorated, I decided to continue my hike to the Grande Cascade D'akchour. This part of the trail was more challenging, with steeper inclines and rocky terrain. However, the effort was well worth it. The views along the way were simply breathtaking, with panoramic vistas of the Rif Mountains. As I climbed higher, I could see the valley stretching out before me, a tapestry of green and brown.

Finally, I reached the Grande Cascade. The sight was truly awe-inspiring. The water plunged down from a great height, creating a thunderous roar that echoed through the valley. The base of the falls was shrouded in mist, adding to the mystical atmosphere. I found a spot on a nearby rock and simply sat there, mesmerized by the power and beauty of nature. I thought about Thandi and David, wishing they were here to experience this with me. Thandi would have loved splashing in the cool water, and David would have appreciated the stunning views.

After soaking in the scenery, I made my way back down the trail, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. I stopped for lunch at Restaurant Triana, where I enjoyed a delicious meal with a view of the mountains. The food was excellent, and the service was friendly and attentive. It was the perfect way to refuel after a long hike. I enjoyed a traditional Moroccan tagine, savoring the rich flavors and spices. The restaurant was a welcome respite, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the other travelers who were also enjoying the view.

As the afternoon wore on, I decided to treat myself to a relaxing break at Ben jamaê coffey. I sipped on a refreshing mint tea and reflected on the day's adventures. The atmosphere was laid-back and convivial, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the locals who were also there. It was a perfect way to unwind and soak in the local culture. I made a mental note to bring David here someday; he would love the relaxed vibe and the strong coffee.

For dinner, I chose Restaurant Bab Kasaba, known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with traditional décor and a warm ambiance. I ordered a tagine, which was bursting with flavor and spices. The service was impeccable, and the staff made me feel right at home. It was a satisfying end to a day filled with natural beauty and cultural immersion. I thought about how much I enjoy these solo adventures, the freedom to explore at my own pace and discover hidden gems along the way.

As I made my way back to my guesthouse, I couldn't help but smile. Today had been a true adventure, a journey into the heart of Morocco's natural beauty. The Akchour Waterfalls were even more stunning than I had imagined, and the hike through the Rif Mountains was an experience I will never forget. I am so glad I decided to venture out and explore beyond the blue walls of Chefchaouen. The memories of the cascading water, the lush landscapes, and the friendly faces will stay with me long after I leave this magical place.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Plaza Uta el Hamman and find the perfect vantage point at City View Point. I’m also hoping to find a unique souvenir at Bukhara & Silk. I'm excited to see what new adventures await me in the morning.

This trip is proving to be exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with myself and the world around me. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel and share my experiences with all of you. And who knows, maybe one day I'll bring Thandi and David back here to experience the magic of Chefchaouen and Akchour Waterfalls for themselves.

I am also reminded to buy sunscreen and a universal power adapter, the two items I forgot to pack. I am sure I can find these in Chefchaouen. I should probably do that tomorrow, as well.
