Solo Exploration of Kyoto's Cultural Wonders
Day 4: Spiritual Heights and Culinary Delights: A Day of Discovery in Kyoto
Explore Kyoto's iconic Fushimi Inari, serene Tofuku-ji Temple, and the panoramic views from Kyoto Tower on a captivating solo adventure.
Day 4: Temples, Towers, and Tastes of Kyoto
Today was a whirlwind of spiritual exploration, historical immersion, and culinary indulgence. From the vibrant pathways of Fushimi Inari Shrine (Thousand Torii Gates) to the tranquil gardens of Tofuku-ji Temple and the breathtaking heights of Nidec Kyoto Tower, every moment was a sensory feast. It's days like these that remind me why I embarked on this solo adventure in the first place – to lose myself in the beauty and culture of a new place.
My day began with an early start to beat the crowds at the famed Fushimi Inari Shrine (Thousand Torii Gates). As I approached the entrance, the air was thick with anticipation. The seemingly endless rows of vermilion torii gates snaking up the mountainside were a sight to behold. Each gate, donated by individuals and businesses, is inscribed with their name and the date of the donation. The sheer scale of the shrine is impressive; it is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, and the climb to the top of Mount Inari is a pilgrimage in itself. I took my time, ascending through the mesmerizing tunnels of gates, stopping occasionally to catch my breath and admire the views of Kyoto unfolding below. The further I climbed, the fewer people I encountered, allowing for moments of quiet contemplation amidst the ancient trees. The shrine was established in 711 AD, and is known worldwide as one of the most iconic sights in Kyoto, and in Japan as a whole.
Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those taken alone, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience and discover hidden aspects of ourselves.
Foxes, considered messengers of Inari, were everywhere – in statue form, holding keys, scrolls, or jewels in their mouths. I even spotted a few real ones darting through the underbrush. Reaching the summit was a triumphant moment, not just for the physical accomplishment, but also for the spiritual connection I felt with this sacred place. I took some time to appreciate the view before beginning my descent, feeling grateful for the experience.

For breakfast, I decided to try Arash's Kitchen. It was a delightful fusion of Persian and Indian cuisine. I opted for a hearty naan with kebab, which gave me the energy I needed for the rest of the day. It’s conveniently located near many tourist spots, and I was able to enjoy the aromatic kebabs and flavorful curries on offer before continuing my day. Arash's Kitchen specializes in a fusion of Iranian, Indian, Turkish, and Arabic cuisines, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I made a mental note to tell David and Thandi about it, as they would surely enjoy the unique flavors and the belly dancing shows on Fridays and Saturdays. It reminded me of the vibrant flavors of home, and I felt a pang of longing for my family.

Next on my itinerary was Tofuku-ji Temple, a Zen temple known for its spectacular autumn colors, though the fresh greenery of May was equally captivating. Founded in 1236, Tofuku-ji is one of the principal Zen temples in Kyoto and the head temple of its own school within the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. I wandered through the serene gardens, marveling at the meticulous arrangement of rocks, moss, and trees. The Hojo Garden was particularly striking, with its checkerboard pattern of stones and moss. The Sanmon Gate, dating back to 1425, is the oldest Zen gate of its kind in Japan and a National Treasure. It is two stories high and five bays wide, with the central three bays being doors. The temple was greatly reduced in size from 70 buildings to 25 during the Meiji era. The gardens at Tofuku-ji's Hojo are unique for surrounding the building on all sides, each with a different character.

As I strolled through the temple grounds, I couldn't help but think about the contrast between the bustling energy of Fushimi Inari and the peaceful ambiance of Tofuku-ji. Both were beautiful in their own way, offering different perspectives on Kyoto's rich cultural heritage. It's amazing how a single city can hold so much diversity.
For lunch, I ventured to Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi for a delightful teppanyaki experience. The restaurant is located in Kiyamachi-dori along the Takase river, giving it a relaxed and adult atmosphere. I savored a perfectly cooked steak, expertly prepared right before my eyes. The chef's skill and attention to detail were evident in every bite. It felt like a luxurious treat, and I relished the opportunity to indulge in some delicious Japanese cuisine.

In the late afternoon, I made my way to Nidec Kyoto Tower, the tallest structure in the city. Standing at 131 meters, the tower offers panoramic views of Kyoto and beyond. From the observation deck, I could see the temples and shrines I had visited earlier in the day, as well as the sprawling cityscape stretching towards the horizon. It was a perfect way to gain a new perspective on Kyoto's layout and appreciate its blend of traditional and modern architecture. World Heritage sites and National Treasures, such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple and To-ji Temple, were visible from the 100-meter observation deck. The free telescopes allowed me to get a closer look at the scenery, and I could even glimpse Osaka in the distance.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the city, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. I lingered on the observation deck, soaking in the breathtaking views and reflecting on the day's adventures. The experience reminded me of the importance of taking time to appreciate the beauty around us, whether it's a stunning landscape or a simple act of kindness.
For dinner, I had made a reservation at Chihana, a Michelin-starred restaurant known for its exquisite kaiseki cuisine. It was a culinary journey like no other, with each dish meticulously crafted to showcase the flavors of the season. The chef's creativity and artistry were evident in every course, from the delicate appetizers to the flavorful main dishes. The restaurant's unique style combines urban cuisine with Japanese cuisine, taking guests on an incredible flavor journey. The menu incorporates a mixture of fruits that are in season, such as mangoes, with seafood, and includes a delicious soup dish, one of which includes raw Yuba. I savored every bite, appreciating the skill and passion that went into creating such a memorable dining experience. The dinnerware was also a highlight, with rare collections of pieces such as Koimari, Arita-ware, and Rosanjin Kitaoji adding to the wonderful experience.

After dinner, I decided to unwind at The Common One Bar Kyoto. It's a modern bar where you can fully enjoy the charm of Kyoto, featuring tatami rooms and a tea room, creating a space where tradition and modernity blend beautifully. The attentive service from the bartenders and the creative food offerings, such as smoked snacks, provided a special experience. I enjoyed a brandy-based cocktail, savoring the unique aroma of the brandy and the refreshing flavor of the fruit. The bar is a hidden gem in Gion, with a hideout-like atmosphere that made me feel like I was in on a secret. The Common One Bar Kyoto is known for its cozy and inviting atmosphere, with a blend of modern and traditional elements creating a warm and welcoming ambiance.
