Cultural Journey Through Kyoto with Friends
Day 1: Kyoto's Gion District: A Journey Through Time and Tradition
Immerse yourself in Kyoto's cultural heart: Explore Yasaka Shrine, Maruyama Park, and the enchanting Gion district with friends.
A Day of Discovery in Gion
My first day in Kyoto, a city I've dreamt of visiting for years, was nothing short of magical. Arriving with my friends, I was eager to immerse myself in the city's rich cultural tapestry. Today was all about exploring the Gion district, a place known for its geishas, historic temples, and beautiful gardens. It felt like stepping back in time, a world away from the bustling streets of Toronto.
Our adventure began at Yasaka Shrine, a vibrant Shinto shrine that stands as a guardian of the Gion district. The shrine was alive with activity. I learned from a local that we were fortunate to be here close to Setsubun, a festival to ward off evil spirits. The air was filled with the scent of incense and the sounds of traditional music. The bright vermilion gates and intricate carvings were a feast for the eyes. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and reverence wash over me as we walked through the grounds. It was a beautiful welcome to Kyoto, and a stark contrast to the often hurried pace of life back home.

From Yasaka Shrine, we strolled into Maruyama Park, a tranquil oasis adjacent to the shrine. Even in late February, the park held a serene beauty. I could imagine how stunning it must be during cherry blossom season. Though the cherry blossoms weren't yet in full bloom, there were plum blossoms starting to emerge, their delicate fragrance filling the air. I remembered the weeping plum blossoms I had read about at Jonangu Shrine, and made a mental note to visit soon.

To walk through Kyoto is to walk through centuries of history, art, and culture.
We paused by a small pond, watching koi fish glide gracefully through the water. The park was dotted with traditional teahouses, and we decided to stop for a cup of matcha. Sipping the warm, slightly bitter tea while gazing at the peaceful scenery was a moment of pure bliss.
For lunch, we had reservations at Saishuan Shiraki, a vegan restaurant. As someone who appreciates vegetarian cuisine, I was eager to try their offerings. The restaurant was small and intimate, with a very friendly owner. We opted for the vegan course menu, and each dish was a work of art. The flavors were complex and delicate, a true celebration of Japanese ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the kiwi inari, a unique and delicious creation. It was a culinary experience that I will not soon forget.

After lunch, we wandered through the heart of Gion, the city's geisha district. The narrow streets were lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, their facades exuding an old-world charm. I imagined geishas gracefully gliding through these streets on their way to appointments. Although we didn't spot any geishas, the atmosphere was enchanting. We explored the quaint shops, admiring the exquisite craftsmanship of the local artisans. It was a sensory overload in the best possible way.
Our shopping stop was at Kyoto Crafts Store, where I found exquisite handmade paper and calligraphy brushes. I have always enjoyed carpet weaving, and thought I might try my hand at calligraphy. I was able to find some beautiful paper with floral patterns, which reminded me of the patterns in my headscarf. It's a perfect way to bring a piece of Kyoto back to Toronto with me.

For dinner, we had a reservation at Kikunoi Roan, a renowned kaiseki restaurant. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with impeccable service. The kaiseki cuisine was a multi-course culinary journey, with each dish showcasing the freshest seasonal ingredients. The presentation was exquisite, a true feast for the eyes as well as the palate. I was particularly impressed with the chef's ability to balance flavors and textures, creating a harmonious and unforgettable dining experience.

Before heading back to Hotel ZIZI Kyoto Gion, we decided to stop for a nightcap at L'Escamoteur, a cozy bar known for its creative cocktails. The bar had a unique and intimate atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a long day of exploring. The bartender was a true mixologist, crafting innovative and delicious drinks. I enjoyed a sake-based cocktail, a perfect ending to a perfect day.

We also had breakfast at Yasakadori Enraku. The restaurant exuded a calm atmosphere, and the dishes were exquisite with their delicate dashi flavors. I had Oden and Kyoto pickles, and the combination was exceptional. We had various seating options, including private rooms, and the comfort level was outstanding.

As I reflect on my first day in Kyoto, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. The city has exceeded all of my expectations. From the vibrant temples to the tranquil gardens, from the exquisite cuisine to the warm hospitality, Kyoto has captured my heart. I am eager to explore more of this magical city in the days to come.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), Ryoan-ji, and Ninna-ji Temple. I am especially excited to see the Golden Pavilion, as it is one of the most iconic landmarks in Japan. I am also looking forward to exploring the serene rock garden at Ryoan-ji and the beautiful Ninna-ji Temple.
I am also looking forward to visiting the Daimaru Kyoto Store and Bar K6 tomorrow as well.
I'm so glad I decided to take this trip with my friends, and I can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow brings. I know Habibullah would have loved to see this with me, but I know he is happy for me back home. He always encourages my travels, and I know I will have so many stories to share with him when I return.
I also wish I had brought my Japanese phrasebook! It would have been so helpful today.
I'm so excited to continue my journey through Kyoto, and I can't wait to share more of my experiences with you all. Until tomorrow, khoda hafez!
