Farewell, Kyoto: A Day of Temples and Tunes

As my journey through Kyoto with my friends draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared. Today was a perfect culmination of everything that makes this city so special: serene temples, bustling streets, and the warmth of its people. It's hard to believe our adventure is already coming to an end, but I am determined to make the most of every last moment, soaking in the beauty and culture of this enchanting city.

Our final day began with a delightful breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura. The restaurant was lovely, and the staff were extremely welcoming. The set meal, crafted with fresh fish and seasonal local vegetables, was a true delight, and the Obanzai All-You-Can-Eat option was a fantastic way to sample a variety of local flavors. It was the perfect start to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Our first stop was the magnificent Heian Shrine. As we approached the shrine, the giant torii gate loomed before us, a vibrant vermillion structure that seemed to transport us to another world. The shrine, built to commemorate Kyoto's 1100th anniversary as the capital, was a stunning replica of the original Imperial Palace from the Heian Period. We wandered through the spacious grounds, admiring the traditional architecture and the serene atmosphere. The gardens, with their ponds and weeping cherry trees, were a sight to behold, even in late winter. I could only imagine how breathtaking they must be in full bloom. The history of the shrine, dedicated to Emperor Kammu and Emperor Komei, was fascinating.

After immersing ourselves in the beauty of Heian Shrine, we made our way to Nanzen-ji, a Zen Buddhist temple known for its stunning architecture and tranquil gardens. The temple was originally built as a villa for Emperor Gosaga in 1264 and later converted into a temple in 1291. We explored the Hojo (Abbot's Quarters), a National Treasure that houses exquisite rock gardens and artwork. The Leaping Tiger Garden, designed by Kobori Enshu, was a masterpiece of Zen simplicity, with raked sand and stones representing water and mountains. We took a moment to sit and contemplate the serene beauty of the garden, feeling a sense of peace wash over us. The Suirokaku Aqueduct, built during the Meiji era to transport water from Lake Biwa, was an unexpected sight, its brick arches adding a touch of European influence to the traditional Japanese landscape. Habibullah was especially fascinated by the aqueduct, admiring the engineering feat and its integration into the temple grounds.

Next on our itinerary was Eikandō Temple, also known as Zenrin-ji Temple, famous for its autumn colors and the unique Mikaeri Amida statue. Though the maple trees were not yet in their full glory, the temple's beauty was undeniable. Founded in 853 by Shinjo, a disciple of Kobo Daishi, Eikando has a rich history as a center for Esoteric Buddhism and later, Pure Land Buddhism. We wandered through the temple complex, connected by wooden corridors, admiring the various halls and the Hojo Pond, where the reflections of the surrounding trees created a mesmerizing scene. The Mikaeri Amida statue, with its head turned to look back over its shoulder, was particularly striking, a reminder of the Buddha's compassion for all beings. I found myself drawn to the temple's peaceful atmosphere, a welcome respite from the bustling city.

For lunch, we indulged in a delightful meal at Tategami. It was a wonderful experience, and the food was both delicious and beautifully presented. The restaurant's calm atmosphere and traditional Japanese aesthetic added to the overall experience.

In the afternoon, we ventured into the heart of Kyoto's shopping district, Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. This vibrant pedestrian street was a sensory overload, with shops selling everything from traditional crafts to trendy fashion. We strolled through the bustling arcade, browsing the various stores and soaking in the lively atmosphere. I couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs for Farzana and my grandchildren, small reminders of our time in Kyoto. The street was a perfect blend of old and new, with traditional shops nestled alongside modern boutiques.

As the day drew to a close, we sought out a final taste of Kyoto's nightlife at Rocking Bar ING. Tucked away in a building on Kiyamachi, this hidden gem was a haven for rock music lovers. The owner, Hako, was a true music fanatic, with an impressive collection of vinyl records from the 1960s to 1990s. We requested some of our favorite tunes, and Hako happily obliged, filling the small bar with the sounds of classic rock. It was the perfect way to end our day, a final toast to the memories we had made in Kyoto. The atmosphere was fantastic, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home.
