Cultural Journey Through Kyoto with Friends
Day 3: Wandering Through Arashiyama's Enchanting Bamboo Forest
Discovering the serene beauty of Arashiyama, from its majestic bamboo forest to the tranquil Tenryu-ji Temple. A day of Kyoto wonders.
A Daydream in Arashiyama
Today, Kyoto unveiled another layer of its captivating charm, as my friends and I ventured into the famed Arashiyama district. It was a day filled with serene landscapes, spiritual awakenings, and the simple joys of exploring a world away from Toronto. The crisp February air, carrying whispers of ancient tales, set the stage for an unforgettable experience.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Arash's Kitchen. It was a delightful surprise to find such a welcoming spot serving Persian and Indian Halal cuisine right here in Kyoto. The aromas of spices and freshly baked naan filled the air, reminding me of the comforting flavors of home, yet with a unique Japanese twist. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our day of exploration.
With our bellies content, we made our way to Arashiyama.
Experience the tranquil beauty and rich heritage of Arashiyama, a must-visit district in Kyoto known for its bamboo groves and cultural landmarks.
As we stepped off the train at Arashiyama Station on the Keifuku Line, the quaint beauty of the district immediately enveloped us. The weather was mild, with a gentle breeze rustling through the trees – a stark contrast to the frigid Toronto winter we had left behind. The forecast suggested temperatures hovering in the high 50s Fahrenheit, ideal for a day of walking and discovery.
Our first stop was Tenryu-ji Temple, a place of profound historical significance. Founded in 1339 by Shogun Ashikaga Takauji in memory of Emperor Go-Daigo, the temple stands as a testament to the intricate dance of power and spirituality that defines Japan's past. As I walked through the temple grounds, I couldn't help but reflect on the parallels between Afghanistan's tumultuous history and Japan's own struggles and triumphs. Both nations, though vastly different, have endured immense hardship and emerged with a resilient spirit.
The garden, a masterpiece by Muso Soseki, is a serene reminder that even amidst turmoil, beauty can flourish and offer solace.
The Sogenchi Garden at Tenryu-ji was a sight to behold. Created by the renowned garden designer Muso Soseki, the garden seamlessly blends aristocratic traditions with Zen culture. The central pond, surrounded by carefully placed rocks and pine trees, mirrored the Arashiyama mountains in the distance, creating a breathtaking panorama. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a chance to escape the noise of the world and connect with the quiet beauty of nature.

Leaving Tenryu-ji, we ventured into the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. Sunlight filtered through the towering stalks of bamboo, casting dappled shadows on the path below. The air was filled with the gentle rustling of leaves, creating a symphony of nature that soothed the soul. Habibullah would have loved this place; he always found solace in the simplicity of nature. It reminded me of our garden back in Bamyan, where we grew apricots and mulberries, a small oasis of peace amidst the chaos of our homeland.

As we walked deeper into the forest, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. The sheer scale of the bamboo, reaching towards the sky like green skyscrapers, was truly humbling. It was easy to see why this place is considered one of Kyoto's most iconic sights. Though it was a bit crowded, as other tourists were keen to experience it as well, the beauty of the grove was still apparent.
After immersing ourselves in the tranquility of the bamboo forest, we decided to explore the local shops. Rōji Tempo caught my eye with its traditional crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a few small trinkets for Farzana, who always appreciates the unique beauty of Japanese artistry. I found a delicate, hand-painted fan depicting cherry blossoms, which I knew she would adore.

Lunchtime found us at Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi, a premium steak restaurant located along the Takase River in Kiyamachi-dori. The restaurant had a relaxed, intimate atmosphere, perfect for a special occasion. Each seat was a counter seat, allowing us to watch the chef's cooking techniques. I enjoyed a steak, cooked to perfection, with delicious sides. The service was exceptional, and the overall experience was one of the best meals I've had in Japan. It was a delightful contrast to the simple meals we often shared in Afghanistan, but the shared joy of good food and good company was a universal language.

As evening approached, we made our way to THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO for dinner. This Italian restaurant is housed in a beautifully restored traditional building, once the residence of a renowned Japanese painter. The ambiance was elegant and refined, with a touch of old-world charm. The Italian cuisine was superb, with each dish a work of art in itself. I savored every bite, appreciating the fusion of Italian flavors with Japanese ingredients.

To cap off our day, we decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife at the Kyoto Star Bar. This cozy bar offered a wide selection of cocktails and a relaxed atmosphere. It was a perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. I ordered a glass of sake, savoring the smooth, subtle flavors as I chatted with my friends. The bartender, dressed in a traditional kimono, added a touch of Kyoto flair to the experience.
