Today was a day of blending adventure with cultural immersion in the heart of Cinque Terre. From the back of a trusty steed, I witnessed breathtaking panoramas, and later, I wandered through the historic streets of a charming village, each experience etching itself into my memory. It was a day of contrasts, of nature's grandeur and human artistry, leaving me with a deeper appreciation for this enchanting region.

Our Saturday began with a hearty breakfast at Il Piccolo Diavolo in Monterosso al Mare. Astrid was particularly excited about the *colazione Italiana*, devouring a *pasticcino* with gusto while Maximilian enjoyed a strong espresso to prepare for the day's adventures. I opted for a simple cappuccino and a slice of focaccia, a Ligurian staple that never disappoints. Fueled up, we made our way to D.Ranch Horse Riding Cinque Terre, nestled in the hills above Monterosso.

The drive up to the ranch was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the coastline. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Denise, the owner, who clearly has a passion for horses and the stunning landscape she calls home. Astrid, initially a bit apprehensive, was quickly won over by the gentle nature of the horses. I must admit, even I, a librarian more accustomed to the hushed halls of academia than the open trails, felt a thrill of anticipation as I mounted my horse.

Our ride took us along winding paths, through fragrant pine forests, and along ridges offering panoramic views of the coastline. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wildflowers and the distant tang of the sea. It was a truly unique way to experience the Cinque Terre, far removed from the crowded trails and bustling towns. As we rode, Denise shared stories about the local flora and fauna, as well as the history of the area.

The views were simply stunning. From our vantage point high above the coastline, we could see the colorful villages of Cinque Terre clinging to the cliffs, each with its own unique charm. The sea sparkled in the sunlight, and the sky was a brilliant blue, dotted with fluffy white clouds. It was a scene straight out of a postcard, and I felt incredibly fortunate to be experiencing it in such a special way. Astrid, now completely at ease, peppered Denise with questions about the horses, their care, and their individual personalities. It warmed my heart to see her so engaged and enthusiastic.

After our invigorating ride, we thanked Denise and the horses and made our way to Vernazza, perhaps the most iconic of the Cinque Terre villages. We strolled along the main street, admiring the colorful buildings and the bustling harbor. The village was alive with activity, tourists and locals alike enjoying the beautiful September weather. We decided to have lunch at Ristorante Luca Vernazza, a place recommended for its Ligurian cuisine. The restaurant was bustling, and we were lucky to snag a table with a view of the harbor. I ordered the spaghetti alle vongole, a classic dish of the region, while Maximilian opted for the *fritto misto*, a selection of fried seafood. Astrid, predictably, chose the *pesto* pasta, a Ligurian staple that she adores.

The church dates back to the 14th century and features a simple yet elegant interior. The history of St. Peter's Basilica is quite interesting. Emperor Constantine decided to build a basilica where the apostle had been buried. The construction of the basilica was completed in 329. The church was used for the celebration of the cult, as a covered cemetery and as a funeral banquet room.

As the afternoon wore on, we sought a spot to unwind and enjoy a drink. We stumbled upon La Scuna Wine & Beer, a charming little bar with a terrace overlooking the sea. We ordered a round of local wine and some *bruschette*, and settled in to watch the sunset. The sky was ablaze with color, painting the sea and the village in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

For dinner, we chose Ristorante La Posada, enticed by its reputation for fresh seafood and traditional Ligurian dishes. We started with an *antipasto* of marinated anchovies, a local delicacy that I've grown to appreciate. For our main courses, Maximilian chose the grilled sea bass, while I opted for the *muscoli ripieni*, stuffed mussels, a Vernazza specialty. Astrid enjoyed a simple pasta with tomato sauce, a reliable favorite. The food was delicious, the service attentive, and the atmosphere warm and inviting.

As we strolled back to our hotel in Monterosso, the village was quiet and peaceful. The stars twinkled overhead, and the sound of the waves lapping against the shore filled the air. I felt a sense of contentment, grateful for the experiences of the day and the opportunity to share them with my family.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Portovenere and the Grotta di Lord Byron, a grotto that is said to have inspired the famous poet. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery and adventure in this beautiful corner of Italy. I am also hoping to find some time to visit Kalos Boutique to find a handmade Italian design.

Today was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing them in new ways.
