Family Adventure in Tromsø: Chasing the Northern Lights
Day 7: Arctic Spa and Urban Art: A Tromsø Day of Rejuvenation and Discovery
Indulge in Tromsø's unique spa experience and vibrant street art. A perfect blend of relaxation and cultural exploration in the Arctic.
A Day of Arctic Contrasts
Today was a day of delightful contrasts, a true Tromsø experience that blended the invigorating warmth of an Arctic spa with the raw, urban beauty of street art. It was a day for the senses, a day to relax and reflect, and a day to appreciate the unique character of this northern city. I was especially excited to experience the Vulkana Arctic Spa and Adventure Boat, something I'd read about before coming here.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Green Falafel. I always appreciate a good falafel, a taste of the Middle East so far north. Astrid was particularly fond of their falafel wrap, while Maximilian enjoyed a classic plate. It's a small, cozy place, perfect for a quick and satisfying start to the day. It's funny how food can connect you to different parts of the world, even in a place as remote as Tromsø. After breakfast, we walked through the crisp morning air towards the harbor, eager to start our spa adventure.
The Vulkana Arctic Spa and Adventure Boat was an experience unlike any other. Imagine a traditional Norwegian fishing boat transformed into a floating oasis of relaxation. As we stepped aboard, we were greeted by the scent of wood smoke and the gentle rocking of the boat. The facilities were surprisingly luxurious, featuring a wood-fired sauna, a hot tub with panoramic views, and even a Turkish steam room. It was the perfect way to escape the winter chill and unwind.
The highlight, without a doubt, was the polar plunge. Stepping out into the frigid Arctic air and lowering myself into the icy fjord was an exhilarating shock to the system. The initial sting quickly gave way to a sense of invigoration, a feeling of being completely alive. I emerged from the water gasping, my skin tingling, and a wide smile plastered across my face. Maximilian, ever the stoic German, took the plunge without a word, while Astrid watched from the warmth of the hot tub, giggling at our reactions.
The Arctic air, the warm embrace of the sauna, and the vibrant colors of street art – Tromsø is a symphony of contrasts that captivates the soul.
After a morning of pampering and polar plunges, we were ready to explore another side of Tromsø: its vibrant street art scene. We disembarked the Vulkana feeling refreshed and energized, ready to discover the urban art that adorns the city's walls. Before embarking on our street art adventure, we stopped by Naturkompaniet Tromsø to pick up a few essentials. I needed a new pair of gloves, as mine had gotten damp during the polar plunge, and Maximilian wanted to browse their selection of Nordic literature. It's a great store, filled with high-quality outdoor gear and knowledgeable staff. I even found a beautiful Lopapeysa-inspired scarf, a perfect souvenir of our trip.

We started our self-guided street art tour near the city center, wandering through the streets with our eyes peeled for colorful murals and hidden gems. Tromsø's street art scene is a testament to the city's creative spirit, a reflection of its history, culture, and community. Each mural tells a story, from depictions of local legends to bold statements about social issues. I was particularly drawn to a series of murals celebrating local women, their faces etched with strength and resilience.
Astrid, with her keen eye for detail, spotted details that we might have missed. She was fascinated by the intricate designs and the vibrant colors, asking questions about the artists and their inspiration. It was a wonderful way to engage her with the city's culture and to spark her own creativity.
As we strolled through the streets, we stumbled upon a particularly striking mural in a car park. The sheer scale of the artwork was impressive, and the details were breathtaking. It depicted a scene from Sami culture, a reminder of the indigenous people who have inhabited this region for centuries. I felt a sense of connection to the land and its history, a feeling that transcended language and culture.
For lunch, we decided to try Tapas Tromsø AS. I always enjoy tapas, it's a great way to sample a variety of flavors and textures. We ordered a selection of classic Spanish dishes, from patatas bravas to gambas al ajillo. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was a welcome break from the cold weather outside.

After lunch, we continued our street art exploration, venturing further afield to discover more hidden gems. We found murals tucked away in alleyways, adorning the sides of buildings, and even painted on electrical boxes. Each artwork was a surprise, a burst of color and creativity in the midst of the urban landscape. The street art really does add another dimension to the city, and I was delighted to discover that there were guided street art tours available. It's something I would consider doing next time to learn more about the artists and the stories behind the murals.
As the afternoon wore on, we started to feel the chill of the Arctic air creeping in. We decided to warm up with a hearty dinner at Graffi Grill Tromsø. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. We ordered a selection of grilled meats and traditional Norwegian side dishes. I opted for the premium tenderloin steak, while Maximilian chose the Graffi spare ribs. Astrid, of course, wanted a burger. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Tromsø has to offer. From the rejuvenating warmth of the Vulkana Arctic Spa to the raw beauty of its street art, the city is a place of contrasts, a place where nature and culture collide. It's a place that challenges your senses, ignites your imagination, and leaves you feeling inspired. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique corner of the world with my family.
Tomorrow, we are planning to visit the Northern Light Planetarium and Prestvannet. I am particularly excited about the planetarium, as I have always been fascinated by the Aurora Borealis. I am hoping that we will have a clear night and be able to witness the magic of the Northern Lights firsthand. Before that, we'll be having breakfast at Suvi and then lunch at Wedeb's Restaurant. I'm also looking forward to visiting Agenturet Øl og Vinbar in the evening. I've heard they have a great selection of local beers and wines.
As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation for what tomorrow will bring. Tromsø has already exceeded my expectations, and I know that there are still many more adventures to be had. It's a place that stays with you long after you leave, a place that calls you back to its icy shores and its vibrant spirit.
The day was a reminder to embrace the unexpected, to find beauty in the ordinary, and to appreciate the simple joys of life. Tromsø, with its unique blend of nature and culture, has a way of putting things into perspective, of reminding you what truly matters. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow will bring another day of adventure in this magical Arctic city.
