A Day of Northern Delights
Today was a day of embracing both the wild and the refined sides of Tromsø. From the exhilarating rush of dog sledding through snowy landscapes to the contemplative atmosphere of the Northern Norwegian Art Museum, it was a day that truly captured the essence of this Arctic city. I'm so excited to share the details of our adventures.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bread and wine Tromsø. The cozy atmosphere and delicious pastries were the perfect start to a day filled with adventure. Astrid was particularly fond of the cinnamon buns, declaring them the best she’d ever had. Maximilian and I enjoyed some strong coffee, fueling up for the day ahead.
Dog Sledding at Tromsø Wilderness Centre
The highlight of the morning was undoubtedly our visit to the Tromsø Wilderness Centre for some dog sledding. The crisp Arctic air nipped at our faces as we arrived, the excitement palpable. The yelps and howls of the Alaskan huskies filled the air, a symphony of canine enthusiasm that set the tone for the adventure ahead. I must admit, as someone who grew up in Ísafjörður surrounded by nature, I felt a familiar pull towards this raw, untamed energy.

We were bundled into warm layers and given a thorough introduction to dog sledding. Astrid was particularly thrilled, her eyes wide with wonder as she learned how to handle the reins. The staff at the Wilderness Centre were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about their dogs, emphasizing the importance of their well-being. It was heartening to see these magnificent animals treated with such respect and care.
As we set off, the dogs surged forward, their powerful bodies pulling us through the snow-covered trails. The landscape was breathtaking – pristine white fields stretching as far as the eye could see, framed by snow-laden trees. The only sounds were the rhythmic panting of the dogs and the soft crunch of the sled runners on the snow. It was a truly magical experience, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Hannover.
The silence of the Arctic wilderness, broken only by the happy panting of huskies, is a symphony that resonates deep within the soul.
I took a turn at mushing, and it was more challenging than I anticipated! Guiding the sled, feeling the dogs' strength, and navigating the snowy paths required focus and coordination. Astrid, nestled safely in the sled with Maximilian, giggled with delight as we navigated the turns. It was a bonding experience for our family, one that we will cherish for years to come.
After the exhilarating ride, we spent some time cuddling the dogs and learning about their individual personalities. Each dog had its own unique charm, and Astrid was particularly taken with a playful pup named Luna. It was heartwarming to see the connection between the dogs and their handlers, a testament to the dedication and love that goes into caring for these incredible animals.
A Cultural Interlude at the Northern Norwegian Art Museum
In the afternoon, we sought a change of pace with a visit to the Northern Norwegian Art Museum. Housed in a beautiful building that once served as a post office and police station, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the art and culture of Northern Norway. As a librarian specializing in Nordic literature, I always appreciate the opportunity to immerse myself in the artistic expressions of the region.

The museum's collection is diverse, featuring both historical and contemporary works. I was particularly drawn to the Sámi art, which offered a powerful and moving portrayal of indigenous culture. The museum also had an exhibition on the art inspired by nature, which resonated deeply with me after our morning in the wilderness. It was interesting to see how different artists interpreted the landscapes and natural phenomena of the North.
Astrid, surprisingly, was quite engaged, especially with the interactive exhibits. She enjoyed sketching her own interpretations of the artworks and learning about the different techniques used by the artists. It was wonderful to see her developing an appreciation for art and culture at such a young age.
Currently, the museum features several exhibitions, including Layers of Time - Everyday Life in Svalbard, Everything is Speaking – Stories in Motion in Bodø, and Työ/Work. Kväänibiennaali 2025. The Kväänibiennaali 2025 is particularly noteworthy as it highlights contemporary art from artists with a Kven background, offering a unique perspective on Northern Norwegian identity.
Burger Bliss and Historic Brews
For lunch, we decided to try Burgr, a local burger joint known for its creative menu and quirky atmosphere. The restaurant was decorated with vintage video game memorabilia, which delighted Astrid. The burgers were delicious, and the onion strings were a particular hit. Maximilian enjoyed a local craft beer, while Astrid devoured a strawberry milkshake.

In the evening, we ventured out for dinner at Skarven Kro, a traditional Norwegian restaurant with a cozy, rustic ambiance. The restaurant is known for its Norwegian cuisine, and we were eager to sample some local specialties. I opted for the cod, which was cooked to perfection, while Maximilian enjoyed a hearty fillet steak. Astrid, ever adventurous, tried the fish soup and declared it surprisingly tasty.

After dinner, we decided to experience a bit of Tromsø's nightlife with a visit to Ølhallen, the oldest pub in Tromsø. Established in 1928, this iconic pub has a long and colorful history, originally serving as a gathering place for fishermen and workers. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the wide selection of beers from Mack Brewery, the northernmost brewery in the world. With 72 taps, it was quite a sight. I could almost imagine Roald Amundsen sharing a drink here before embarking on one of his expeditions.

As we sipped our beers, we listened to the chatter around us, soaking in the atmosphere of this historic establishment. It was a perfect end to a day that had been filled with adventure, culture, and culinary delights. I even bought a small Mack Brewery souvenir for my father, knowing he would appreciate a taste of Tromsø.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Northern Lights with Spiritinthesky.Northern Lights & Fjord tours. and visit Tromsø Lapland. Astrid is especially excited about seeing the reindeer. I am excited to see the Northern Lights, as I have always been fascinated by them.
As I reflect on today, I'm struck by the unique blend of wilderness and culture that defines Tromsø. It's a city that embraces both its natural surroundings and its artistic spirit, offering visitors a truly unforgettable experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
