Day 2: Hiking Through Senja's Soul: A Day of Natural Wonders
Embark on an unforgettable journey through Ånderdalen National Park and Husfjellet, where pristine landscapes meet breathtaking vistas.
Senja's Embrace: A Day of Discovery
Today, Senja revealed another layer of its enchanting beauty. Leaving our cozy cottage, I felt a surge of excitement for the day's adventures. Astrid, Maximilian, and I were ready to immerse ourselves in the island's natural wonders. Our plan was ambitious: explore Ånderdalen National Park and conquer Husfjellet. I was eager to see if Senja would continue to surprise us, and it certainly did not disappoint.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Senjastua. This charming restaurant, a local landmark since 1974, was just the place to fuel up for our hikes. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and traditional Norwegian fare filled the air. We savored every bite, knowing we needed the energy for the trails ahead. Astrid was particularly fond of the *vafler*, declaring them the best she’d ever tasted. Fully energized, we set off towards Ånderdalen National Park.

Whispers of the Ancient Forest: Ånderdalen National Park
Explore the stunning natural landscapes, diverse wildlife, and thrilling outdoor adventures at Ånderdalen National Park on Senja Island, Norway.
Ånderdalen National Park is a realm of serene wilderness. As we stepped into the park, the air grew crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. The landscape was a vibrant tapestry of green, with ancient pine forests and lush birch woodlands stretching as far as the eye could see. It felt like stepping back in time, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Hannover.
The park's trails were well-maintained, making it easy to navigate even with a curious seven-year-old in tow. We opted for a universally designed hiking trail in Tranøybotn, a gentle path that allowed us to soak in the surroundings without strenuous effort. The trail led us through diverse habitats, from dense forests to open marshlands. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating an ethereal glow that illuminated the forest floor.
Nature is not a place to visit, it is home.
I was particularly captivated by the coastal pine forest, some trees standing tall and proud for over 500 years. It was humbling to walk among these ancient giants, imagining the stories they could tell. Astrid, with her boundless curiosity, peppered me with questions about the trees, the animals, and the history of the park. I did my best to answer, drawing from my knowledge of Nordic folklore to weave tales of mythical creatures and hidden worlds.
We learned that Ånderdalen is home to a variety of wildlife, including moose, reindeer, red foxes, and otters. Although we didn't spot any of the larger animals, we did encounter several species of birds, their songs filling the air with melody. The park is also an important calving and grazing area for semi-domesticated reindeer, a testament to the delicate balance between nature and human activity. I made a mental note to bring binoculars next time, inspired by the diverse bird life. I had forgotten them in Hannover.
After a couple of hours of exploring Ånderdalen, we paused for a picnic lunch by the Ånderelva river. The crystal-clear water flowed gently over smooth stones, creating a soothing soundtrack to our meal. Astrid paddled her feet in the shallows, while Maximilian and I enjoyed the tranquility of the surroundings. It was a perfect moment of family bonding, surrounded by the unspoiled beauty of Senja.
Husfjellet's Majesty: A Panoramic Ascent
Explore the breathtaking views and challenging trails of Husfjellet, a hiker's paradise on Senja Island in Norway, offering nature lovers an unforgettable experience.
With renewed energy, we set our sights on Husfjellet, one of Senja's most iconic peaks. The trailhead was located near Skaland, a charming village nestled at the foot of the mountain. The drive there was a scenic delight, with glimpses of fjords and dramatic coastlines at every turn. Parking was a bit crowded, but we managed to find a spot near the Berg church, right by the trailhead.
The Husfjellet hike is known for its panoramic views, and I was eager to experience them firsthand. The trail began with a gentle ascent through a birch forest, the path well-worn and easy to follow. As we climbed higher, the trees gradually thinned, revealing breathtaking vistas of Ersfjorden and Bergsfjorden. The landscape was dotted with small islands, creating a mesmerizing tapestry of land and sea.
The hike was moderately challenging, with some sections of the trail eroded and wet. Astrid, ever the trooper, tackled the steeper sections with determination, her little legs pumping like pistons. Maximilian and I took turns encouraging her, reminding her of the stunning views that awaited us at the summit. I was so proud of her resilience and adventurous spirit. Perhaps she would follow in my footsteps and become a librarian, specializing in Nordic literature, or perhaps she would forge her own path entirely.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
As we approached the summit, the wind picked up, and the temperature dropped. We donned our waterproof jackets, grateful for the protection against the elements. The final stretch of the hike was the most challenging, with some rocky sections that required careful footing. But the effort was well worth it.
Reaching the summit of Husfjellet was an exhilarating experience. The 360-degree views were simply awe-inspiring. We could see the entire island of Senja stretching out before us, a mosaic of mountains, fjords, and fishing villages. The midnight sun cast a golden glow over the landscape, creating a magical ambiance that I will never forget.
We spent a long time at the summit, soaking in the views and savoring the moment. Astrid, despite her initial fatigue, was energized by the panorama. She pointed out landmarks, identified different mountains, and marveled at the vastness of the ocean. It was a moment of shared wonder, a reminder of the power of nature to inspire and uplift.
Evening Reflections: A Taste of Senja
After descending from Husfjellet, we were famished. We decided to treat ourselves to dinner at The Fat Cod, a restaurant known for its fresh seafood and warm atmosphere. It was located in Skaland, not far from Husfjellet. We were lucky to get a table, as the restaurant was quite popular.

The meal was a culinary delight. We savored the flavors of the sea, enjoying dishes prepared with local ingredients and traditional recipes. I opted for the fish soup, which was hearty and delicious. Maximilian tried the grilled halibut, declaring it the best he'd ever had. Astrid, surprisingly, devoured a plate of cod tongues, a local delicacy that I wasn't sure she'd appreciate.
As we dined, we reflected on the day's adventures. We had hiked through ancient forests, conquered majestic peaks, and witnessed breathtaking views. Senja had exceeded our expectations, revealing itself as a land of unparalleled beauty and natural wonder. I felt grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
After dinner, we made a quick stop at Hugos Pub for a nightcap. It was a lively spot, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the music. I enjoyed a local beer while Maximilian sipped on a glass of wine. Astrid, tired from the day's adventures, fell asleep in my arms, her face peaceful and content.

As I write this, back in our cozy cottage, I can't help but feel a sense of fulfillment. Today was a perfect day, filled with adventure, beauty, and family bonding. Senja has captured our hearts, and I am eager to see what tomorrow brings. We plan to visit the Skaland waterfall and hike up to Segla, another of Senja's iconic peaks. I have a feeling that Senja still has many surprises in store for us. I am also excited to visit Lillevik Art, and perhaps find a piece that captures the essence of Senja.
Good night from Senja,
