A Day of Heights and History in Hvar

Today was a day of exploration and immersion into the heart of Hvar Town. I set out to uncover the historical depths and vibrant culture that this island gem offers, and it certainly didn't disappoint. From scaling ancient fortresses to savoring local flavors, every moment was a delightful discovery.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Pošteni Restaurant - Hvar. I opted for the Shakshuka in Hvar, a flavorful and spicy start that perfectly fueled me for the adventures ahead. The restaurant had a cozy ambiance, and it was evident that they take pride in serving Hvar's cuisine in an honest way. After breakfast, I made my way towards Fortica Fortress, also known as Španjola, which loomed impressively above the town.

The walk up to Fortica Fortress was a bit of a climb, but the winding path through the old town was charming, with glimpses of traditional architecture and the aroma of Mediterranean plants filling the air. The fortress itself dates back to the 16th century and has served as a crucial defensive structure throughout Hvar's history. As I explored its ancient walls and ramparts, I couldn't help but imagine the countless stories it held within its stones.

The panoramic view from the top was simply breathtaking. From this vantage point, I could see the entire town of Hvar, the Pakleni Islands dotting the Adriatic Sea, and the rugged coastline stretching out in either direction. The crisp October air and the stunning vista made the climb more than worthwhile. I spent a good while simply soaking in the beauty of the surroundings. It was easy to imagine how this fortress saved the lives of Hvar's population when the Turks sacked their town in 1571.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

After descending from the fortress, I decided to take a leisurely stroll through Hvar Park.

It provided a serene contrast to the historical intensity of Fortica. The park offered shady pathways, lush greenery, and a sense of tranquility that was incredibly soothing. I found a quiet bench and took a moment to journal, reflecting on my experiences thus far and jotting down notes about the beauty I had witnessed. It was a perfect spot to recharge before continuing my exploration.

Next on my list was St. Stephen's Cathedral, a prominent landmark in Hvar Town.

Located on the eastern side of the main square, its architecture is a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles, reflecting the various phases of its construction. The cathedral stands on the site of an earlier church from the 6th century, adding layers of history to its significance.

Inside, I admired the intricate marble altars, impressive artwork, and the overall sense of reverence that permeated the space. The bell tower, dating back to the 16th century, is a recognizable feature of Hvar's skyline. I learned that the cathedral has been rebuilt and renovated over the centuries, with the current structure dating back to 1605. The interior showcases a triptych from a 16th-century Venetian artist, depicting St. Mary, St. John the Baptist, and St. Jerome. The square around the cathedral was once the most important public place in Hvar, where sentences were passed and agreements were made.

For lunch, I chose Giaxa, a restaurant known for its traditional Dalmatian food with a modern twist.

The setting itself was captivating, housed in a 15th-century Gothic palace. I decided on the Prawn Saffron Risotto, which was creamy and flavorful, perfectly highlighting the local flair that Giaxa is known for. It was a delightful culinary experience that blended the old and the new seamlessly.

After lunch, I indulged in a bit of shopping at Boutique Amazona.

Though I didn't find anything specific to purchase, it was fun to browse the local crafts and get a sense of the artisanal offerings in Hvar. It's always interesting to see what local artisans are creating, and I appreciate supporting local businesses when I travel.

As the afternoon waned, it was time for a different kind of experience: Hula Hula Hvar - Beach Bar & Restaurant.

I had heard that this was *the* place to be for sunset views and vibrant nightlife, and I was eager to check it out. The bar is located on a jut of coastland a short walk from Hotel Amfora, giving it a slightly secluded feel. The atmosphere was buzzing with energy, and the music created a lively vibe as people gathered to watch the sun dip below the horizon.

I ordered a cocktail and found a spot to settle in and enjoy the view. The sunset over the Adriatic was nothing short of spectacular, painting the sky with hues of orange, pink, and purple. The combination of the music, the ocean breeze, and the breathtaking view created an unforgettable sensory experience. Hula Hula definitely lived up to its reputation as one of Hvar's best beach dance floors.

For dinner, I decided to try Restaurant Don Quijote - Hvar, drawn in by its rooftop terrace and stunning views of the sunset.

The restaurant offers a blend of traditional Dalmatian cuisine with international flavors, and I was eager to see what they had to offer. I opted for the tuna ragu, recommended by other diners, and it was indeed delicious. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the service was attentive, making for a memorable dining experience.

As I reflect on the day, I am struck by how much Hvar Town has to offer. From its historical landmarks to its natural beauty and vibrant nightlife, there is something for everyone here. It's a place where the past and present blend seamlessly, creating a unique and captivating atmosphere. I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced it all, and I look forward to what tomorrow brings.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the beaches of Plaža Dubovica and Plaža Ivan Dolac, and perhaps do some more shopping at Adry Jewels. I am also considering visiting Carpe Diem Bar for a taste of Hvar's nightlife.

I am also mindful of the items I forgot to pack, such as an adapter for Croatian power outlets and swimwear. I will try to purchase them tomorrow.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to purchase those forgotten items tomorrow. It’s little things like having the right adapter that can make a trip smoother, and I definitely don’t want to miss out on any swimming opportunities due to lack of swimwear!

I am excited about the prospect of discovering more hidden gems and creating lasting memories. Until then, laku noć from Hvar!
