A Day of Wonders in Tambopata

The second day of my solo adventure in Tambopata National Reserve was nothing short of spectacular. Leaving the familiar comforts of Kelowna behind, I was eager to dive deeper into the heart of the Amazon. Today was all about witnessing the vibrant Collpa Chuncho - Macaw Clay Lick and finding serenity at the Tres Chimbadas Lodge.

My day began before dawn, a concept that, as an orchard manager, I'm quite familiar with, though usually to ensure the apples get the best start to their day! Here, it was to witness one of nature's most incredible displays. After a quick breakfast at HUITOTO LAKE LODGE, I set off towards the Collpa Chuncho, the famed Macaw Clay Lick. The boat ride there was an experience in itself. The air was thick with humidity, a stark contrast to the crisp Kelowna air I'm used to, and the sounds of the jungle were just beginning to stir. I kept my eyes peeled, hoping to catch a glimpse of capybaras lounging on the riverbanks.

As we approached the clay lick, the anticipation was palpable. And then, there they were – hundreds of macaws, parrots, and parakeets, a kaleidoscope of colors against the earthy tones of the clay cliff. The sight was simply breathtaking. The vibrant reds, blues, and greens of their plumage popped against the ochre of the clay, creating a scene that felt almost surreal. The air was filled with their raucous calls, a symphony of the wild that resonated deep within me.

I learned that these birds gather here to ingest the clay, which is rich in minerals that neutralize toxins from their diet of seeds and unripe fruits. It's a vital part of their survival, and witnessing this ritual was a privilege. I spent hours simply observing, snapping photos, and soaking in the sheer magnificence of the moment. It was a photographer's dream, though I did curse myself for forgetting extra memory cards; rookie error!

The Amazon is not just a place; it's an experience that awakens the senses and nourishes the soul.

After the spectacle at the clay lick, I journeyed to the Tres Chimbadas Lodge, a haven of tranquility nestled on the banks of the Tres Chimbadas Lake. The lodge exuded rustic charm, with its wooden bungalows blending seamlessly into the surrounding jungle. It was a welcome change of pace after the vibrant energy of the macaw gathering. No motorized boats are allowed on the lake, ensuring a peaceful environment and high chances of spotting wildlife.

Lunch was at MARACUYEAH, where I savored traditional Peruvian flavors with a modern twist. The restaurant's commitment to locally sourced ingredients was evident in every bite. I also took some time to wander through Plaza Verde - Bio tienda Amazónica, picking up a few locally made crafts and supporting sustainable Amazonian products.

In the afternoon, I took a guided hike through the rainforest surrounding the lodge. My guide, a local expert, shared his vast knowledge of the flora and fauna, pointing out medicinal plants and hidden creatures. I was particularly fascinated by the intricate relationships between the different species, a delicate balance that sustains this incredible ecosystem. I felt a profound sense of connection to nature, a feeling that I often experience back in my orchard, but amplified tenfold in this ancient rainforest.

As dusk approached, I found myself reflecting on the day's experiences. The vibrant energy of the macaws, the tranquil beauty of the lake, and the intricate tapestry of life in the rainforest had left an indelible mark on my soul. Dinner at Restaurante LOS PAJARITOS was a delightful end to the day, savoring local cuisine while recounting the day's adventures.

Tomorrow, I'm heading deeper into the reserve, to the Tambopata Research Center and Lago Sachavacayoc. I'm eager to continue my exploration of this incredible ecosystem, capturing more stunning wildlife photography and connecting with nature at its purest. I might even try to find a Bamboo Bar Tiki Hut for a nightcap!

Back in Kelowna, Aaliyah is probably working late, ensuring some software is up to scratch. I do miss her, but I know she supports my need for these solo adventures. It's a chance for me to reconnect with nature, something that's essential for my well-being. Maybe next time, I can convince her to join me. I know she'd love the vibrant colors and the incredible biodiversity of this place. And who knows, maybe we'll even spot a jaguar together!

For now, I'll drift off to sleep to the symphony of the jungle, dreaming of macaws and the magic of the Amazon.
