Last Day Musings in Zao Onsen

As our tranquil retreat in Zao Onsen draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the simple joys and unexpected delights we've encountered. Today was a day of soaking in the last moments of this serene landscape, a bittersweet farewell to a place that has offered us so much peace.

Breakfast at Omiya Ryokan was, as always, a delightful start to the day. Aaliyah and I savored the traditional Japanese fare, knowing it would be one of our last meals in this cozy inn. The warmth of the staff and the comforting flavors of the food have made Omiya Ryokan feel like a home away from home. It's funny, back in Kelowna, I'm usually rushing through breakfast to get to the orchard, but here, every meal has been a moment to slow down and appreciate the simple things. I'll definitely miss this.

Our first adventure of the day was a visit to Iroha Marsh. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. Aaliyah, ever the nature enthusiast, was in her element, snapping photos of the vibrant flora and fauna. The marsh was a tapestry of greens and blues, reflecting the clear sky above. We strolled along the wooden boardwalk, hand in hand, listening to the gentle sounds of nature. It was a perfect morning.

Next on our itinerary was Mount Zaō. We took the Zaō Ropeway up to the summit, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The mountain air was invigorating, and the vistas were simply breathtaking. At the summit, we decided to have lunch at Zaō Ropeway Summit Restaurant. The food was hearty and satisfying, providing us with the energy we needed to continue our exploration.

I couldn't resist indulging in some last-minute souvenir shopping at TRUNKBASE蔵王店. I picked up a few small trinkets for our friends and family back home, little reminders of our time in Zao Onsen. Aaliyah found a beautiful handcrafted scarf that she absolutely loved. It's amazing how a simple souvenir can encapsulate so many memories.

As the day wound down, we made our way to Shiba Mama no Omise for dinner. This cozy little restaurant was a true gem, serving up authentic Japanese cuisine with a warm, family-like atmosphere. The food was delicious, and the company was even better. We chatted with the owner, Shiba Mama herself, who shared stories about the local culture and traditions. It was a perfect ending to our last day in Zao Onsen.

Reflecting on this trip, I'm struck by how much we've experienced in such a short amount of time. From the serene hot springs to the stunning mountain vistas, Zao Onsen has offered us a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Aaliyah and I have grown closer, sharing moments of laughter, discovery, and quiet contemplation. This trip has been a true blessing, a chance to reconnect with each other and with nature.

Tomorrow marks the end of our journey. We'll be heading back to Tokyo, and then on to Kelowna. While I'm excited to return home, I know that a part of me will always remain in Zao Onsen. This tranquil retreat has rejuvenated our spirits and reminded us of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simple things in life. As I prepare to leave, I carry with me a heart full of gratitude and a longing to return someday.

As we prepare to leave, I'm already anticipating the familiar comfort of our home in Kelowna. I'm eager to get back to the orchard, to see the tulips Aaliyah planted before we left, now probably in full bloom. And of course, I'm looking forward to sharing our stories and photos with friends and family, reliving the magic of Zao Onsen through their eyes.

But before we fully transition back to our everyday lives, I want to capture a few final thoughts about this incredible journey. One thing that struck me was the profound sense of peace that permeated every aspect of Zao Onsen. Whether we were soaking in the onsen, hiking through the mountains, or simply strolling through the village, there was an undeniable sense of calm and tranquility. It's a feeling that I hope to carry with me long after we've left.

Another highlight of the trip was the opportunity to immerse ourselves in Japanese culture. From the traditional ryokan to the local cuisine, we were constantly surrounded by new and fascinating experiences. I especially enjoyed learning about the art of tea ceremony and the history of the samurai. Aaliyah was particularly captivated by the intricate details of the local crafts, from the delicate pottery to the vibrant textiles.

Of course, no trip to Zao Onsen would be complete without mentioning the stunning natural beauty of the area. The mountains, forests, and hot springs created a landscape that was both awe-inspiring and deeply restorative. I'll never forget the feeling of standing on the summit of Mount Zaō, gazing out at the endless expanse of green hills and valleys. And the onsen, oh, the onsen! Soaking in those warm, mineral-rich waters was pure bliss, a perfect way to soothe our tired muscles after a day of hiking and exploring.

And speaking of hiking, I must say that the trails around Zao Onsen were some of the most beautiful I've ever encountered. From the gentle slopes of Iroha Marsh to the more challenging climbs up Mount Zaō, there was something for everyone. I especially appreciated the well-maintained paths and the informative signage, which made it easy to navigate the terrain and learn about the local flora and fauna.

I'm also grateful for the chance to have spent quality time with Aaliyah. Life in Kelowna can be hectic, with both of us juggling work, hobbies, and social obligations. This trip allowed us to disconnect from the distractions of everyday life and focus on each other. We shared countless laughs, deep conversations, and quiet moments of connection. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best thing you can do for your relationship is to simply get away from it all and spend some time together in a beautiful place.

I'm also bringing home a renewed appreciation for sustainable travel. Zao Onsen is a place that clearly values its natural environment, and I was impressed by the efforts to preserve and protect it. From the eco-friendly accommodations to the responsible tourism practices, it's clear that the local community is committed to ensuring that future generations can enjoy the beauty of this area. It's inspired me to think more consciously about my own travel habits and to seek out destinations that prioritize sustainability.

As I pack my bags and prepare for our departure, I can't help but feel a sense of melancholy. Zao Onsen has been a truly special place, a sanctuary of peace and tranquility that has rejuvenated my mind, body, and soul. I'm grateful for the memories we've made here, the lessons we've learned, and the connections we've forged. I know that I'll carry this experience with me always, a reminder of the importance of slowing down, appreciating the simple things, and connecting with nature and each other.

So, farewell Zao Onsen. Thank you for your beauty, your peace, and your hospitality. I hope to return someday, to once again immerse myself in your tranquil embrace. Until then, I'll carry your spirit with me, a reminder to live each day with intention, gratitude, and a sense of wonder.

And as I close this chapter of our journey, I'm already looking forward to the next adventure. Who knows where our travels will take us next? Perhaps we'll explore the ancient ruins of Rome, hike through the rainforests of Costa Rica, or sail the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. The possibilities are endless, and I can't wait to see what the future holds. But no matter where we go, I know that we'll always carry the spirit of Zao Onsen with us, a reminder to embrace the beauty of the world and the joy of shared experiences.

For now, it's time to say goodbye and embark on the journey home. Thank you for joining me on this incredible adventure. I hope that my stories and photos have inspired you to explore the world and discover your own hidden gems. Until next time, happy travels!

And so, with a final glance at the serene landscapes of Zao Onsen, I bid you adieu. May your own travels be filled with wonder, joy, and unforgettable moments. Safe travels, my friends, and may the spirit of adventure always guide your way.
