A Day of Discovery in Zao Onsen

Today was a day of breathtaking views and delightful culinary experiences here in Zao Onsen. Aaliyah and I ventured out to explore some of the region's most iconic spots, and it's safe to say that this little mountain town has completely captured our hearts. From the mystical Okama crater to the charming local eateries, every moment was filled with unique discoveries.

Our day began, as it has each morning here, with a delightful breakfast at Omiya Ryokan. I always appreciate a traditional Japanese breakfast; it's such a nourishing and flavorful start to the day. The spread was incredible, featuring everything from grilled fish and miso soup to pickled vegetables and fluffy rice. Aaliyah, ever the adventurous foodie, tried everything with gusto, while I savored my usual favorites.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set out to conquer the heights of Mount Zao. Our first stop was Okama, the famed volcanic crater lake. To get there, we hopped on the Zao Ropeway, which offered stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. As we ascended, the lush greenery of the mountains unfolded beneath us, a vibrant tapestry of nature's artistry.

Reaching Jizo Sancho Station, the air was noticeably cooler, a refreshing change from the warmer temperatures down in the town. From there, it was a short walk to the viewing platform overlooking Okama. And what a sight it was! The crater lake, also known as Goshiki Numa or the Five-Color Pond, lived up to its name, its waters shimmering with an ethereal green hue. The sheer scale of the crater, combined with the serene beauty of the lake, was truly awe-inspiring. I couldn't help but snap photos, trying to capture the magic of the moment. Aaliyah, with her keen eye for detail, pointed out the unique rock formations surrounding the crater, adding another layer of appreciation to the scene.

The beauty of Zao Onsen lies not only in its stunning landscapes but also in its ability to offer moments of profound tranquility and connection with nature.

After soaking in the views at Okama, we decided to explore Jizo Sancho Station a bit more. I was fascinated to learn that the station sits at an altitude of 1,661 meters. We took a moment to appreciate the Zao natural botanical garden near the station. The alpine plants were a delight to see, thriving in the cool mountain air. It's incredible how life finds a way to flourish even in such a rugged environment.

By lunchtime, our appetites were calling, so we made our way back down to Zao Onsen for a sushi feast at Sushi Kiraku. Finding this place was a stroke of luck! Tucked away in a quiet corner of the town, Sushi Kiraku is a local gem known for its fresh, high-quality sushi. We settled in at the counter, chatting with the friendly chef as he expertly crafted each piece. The sushi was divine, the fish melting in our mouths with a burst of flavor. Aaliyah, who is always up for trying new things, ordered a selection of seasonal specials, while I stuck to my trusty favorites like salmon and tuna. It was the perfect midday treat.

After lunch, we strolled through the charming streets of Zao Onsen, eventually finding ourselves at Zao Specialty Museum Notoya. As someone who appreciates local crafts and unique souvenirs, I was immediately drawn in. The museum-shop was filled with an array of regional treasures, from traditional kokeshi dolls to locally made ceramics and textiles. I was particularly fascinated by the kokeshi dolls, learning about their history and the different styles from various regions of Tohoku. We ended up buying a few small items as mementos of our trip, including a beautiful hand-painted kokeshi doll for our home in Kelowna.

As evening approached, we decided to try Shiba Mama no Omise for dinner. This cozy eatery, recommended by several locals, promised a taste of authentic Yamagata cuisine. And it did not disappoint! The restaurant had a warm, inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. I opted for the Shiba Mama set, a hearty meal that included rice, vegetables, and a flavorful meat dish. Aaliyah, always keen on healthy options, chose a vegetarian plate with a variety of seasonal vegetables. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. It felt like we were dining in someone's home, surrounded by the comforting aromas of home-cooked meals.

One of the highlights of the evening was chatting with Shiba Mama herself. She was a warm and welcoming woman, eager to share stories about her restaurant and the local area. She told us about her commitment to using fresh, local ingredients and her passion for creating healthy, delicious meals. It was a truly special experience, one that made us feel like we were part of the Zao Onsen community.

As we walked back to Omiya Ryokan under the starlit sky, Aaliyah and I reflected on the day's adventures. We had seen breathtaking landscapes, savored delicious food, and connected with the local culture in a meaningful way. Zao Onsen had exceeded all our expectations, and we were already looking forward to what tomorrow would bring.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of the natural beauty surrounding Zao Onsen. The itinerary includes a visit to Zaō Quasi-National Park and a drive along the scenic Zao Echo Line. And in the evening, we're hoping to unwind with some local sake at Tsumami: Yamagata Sake Museum & Bar. It sounds like another day filled with adventure and discovery!

Back at the Ryokan, I took some time to reflect on the day and the trip so far. Managing an orchard back in Kelowna, I'm used to the rhythms of nature, but there's something uniquely captivating about the landscapes here in Japan. Perhaps it's the blend of manicured gardens and wild mountain scenery, or maybe it's the way the seasons seem to paint the landscape in ever-changing hues. Whatever it is, I find myself feeling deeply connected to this place, a sense of belonging that transcends geographical boundaries.

Aaliyah, with her background in software development, often marvels at the seamless blend of technology and tradition in Japan. From the high-speed trains to the ancient temples, there's a sense of harmony between the old and the new that's both fascinating and inspiring. She's been taking copious notes and photos, always on the lookout for innovative ideas that she can apply to her work back home.

As I write this, Aaliyah is already sound asleep, her dreams no doubt filled with visions of snow monsters and steaming hot springs. I, on the other hand, am still buzzing with energy, eager to capture every detail of our journey in this blog. It's a way for me to relive the experiences, to share them with others, and to preserve them for posterity. Plus, it's a great excuse to indulge in my love for writing and photography.

Before I turn in for the night, I want to share a thought that's been on my mind throughout the day. It's something that Shiba Mama said to us during dinner, a simple yet profound observation about the importance of slowing down and appreciating the present moment. In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, it's easy to get caught up in the rush of daily life, to forget to savor the small joys and simple pleasures that surround us. But here in Zao Onsen, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the warmth of the local people, I'm reminded of the importance of being present, of fully experiencing each moment as it unfolds. It's a lesson that I hope to carry with me long after we leave this enchanting place.

Goodnight from Zao Onsen. Until tomorrow, may your days be filled with adventure, discovery, and a deep appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us.
