Whispers of Old Kyoto

Today, Kyoto unfolded before us like a beautifully preserved scroll, revealing layers of history and culture with every step. From the serene heights of a temple to the charming, winding streets below, it was a day of discovery and connection. Join me as I share our family's unforgettable journey through this ancient city.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hyoto Shijo Karasuma, conveniently located near our hotel, Ace Hotel Kyoto. I always appreciate a good breakfast buffet, especially when traveling with Astrid. Maximilian enjoyed the Japanese options, while Astrid happily munched on pastries. Fueled up, we were ready to tackle the day's adventures.

Our main destination for the morning was Kiyomizu-dera, a temple I had been eagerly anticipating visiting. We hopped on a bus, and soon we were making our way up the bustling streets leading to the temple entrance. The air was filled with the excited chatter of tourists and the enticing aromas of street food. It was a sensory overload in the best way possible.

As we approached Kiyomizu-dera, the iconic vermilion pagoda came into view, standing proudly against the backdrop of the lush hillside. The temple, founded in 780, truly lives up to its name, which translates to Pure Water Temple. The history of this place is palpable; you can almost feel the weight of centuries as you walk through its gates.

The main hall, with its famous wooden stage jutting out over the hillside, was even more impressive in person. The stage, built without the use of any nails, stands 13 meters above the ground, offering panoramic views of Kyoto. We took our time soaking in the scenery, the city sprawling out before us, framed by the delicate blossoms of cherry trees. It was breathtaking. I learned that the stage was reconstructed in 1633, and it is supported by 18 pillars made from zelkova trees. It’s incredible to think about the craftsmanship that went into creating such a structure.

The Evening Special Visit 2025 spring had just started a few days prior, so there were many visitors admiring the illuminated scenery of the temple, which is dedicated to Kannon, the goddess of mercy. I made sure to offer a prayer of thanksgiving in front of the statue of Kannon, grateful for the opportunity to experience such a beautiful place with my family. It felt like a privilege to be there, surrounded by so much history and natural beauty.

Of course, we couldn't leave Kiyomizu-dera without visiting the Otowa Waterfall at the base of the main hall. The waterfall's waters are divided into three separate streams, each said to offer a different benefit: longevity, success at school, and a fortunate love life. We watched as visitors lined up to drink from the streams, using cups attached to long poles. Astrid was especially fascinated by the process, though we only let her sample one stream – we didn't want to be greedy!

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of ancient places.

After Kiyomizu-dera, we strolled down the charming streets of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka. These historic lanes, lined with traditional wooden shops and teahouses, offer a glimpse into Kyoto's past. The atmosphere was magical, with the gentle slope of the cobblestone streets, the traditional architecture, and the occasional geisha gliding by in her exquisite kimono.

We explored the various shops, admiring the local crafts and souvenirs. Astrid was particularly taken with the colorful fans and the intricate pottery. I picked up a beautiful silk scarf as a memento of our trip. Maximilian, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in finding a good cup of green tea. We stopped at a traditional teahouse for a brief respite, savoring the moment and soaking in the ambiance.

There's a local myth that says if you fall on Sannenzaka, you'll die in three years, and if you fall on Ninenzaka, you'll die in two. We made sure to watch our step! The names Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka translate to Slope of Three Years and Slope of Two Years. It is believed that Hideyoshi Toyotomi's wife walked over the slopes to Kiyomizu temple to pray for a child, which is how Sannenzaka got its name.

For lunch, we headed to Katsukura Tonkatsu Sanjo Main Store after hearing rave reviews of their Tonkatsu. Luckily, we arrived just before the lunchtime rush and were seated quickly. The restaurant itself was cozy and inviting, with a traditional Japanese aesthetic. We ordered a selection of tonkatsu sets, and the food arrived promptly. The pork cutlets were perfectly crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. It was some of the best tonkatsu I've ever had. I also enjoyed grinding sesame seeds to make my own tonkatsu dipping sauce. Astrid surprised us all by devouring her entire portion of tonkatsu, a testament to just how delicious it was!

In the evening, after Astrid was in bed, Maximilian and I ventured out to L'Escamoteur, a bar known for its unique cocktails and magical atmosphere. We had heard it made the World's 50 Best Bars list, so we had to see what it was all about. The bar was small and intimate, with a whimsical decor that felt like stepping into a magician's workshop. The bartenders, all French, were incredibly skilled and passionate about their craft.

I ordered a cocktail made with yuzu and local gin, while Maximilian opted for something with a smoky flavor. Both drinks were expertly crafted and presented with a touch of theatrical flair. The bartender even performed a few magic tricks for us, adding to the overall enchantment of the evening. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Kyoto's ancient wonders. I appreciated that the bar staff wove local ingredients like yuzu and matcha into classic recipes. It made for a unique experience.

As I reflect on our day, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's rich history and culture. From the serene beauty of Kiyomizu-dera to the charming streets of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, every moment was a treasure. Kyoto has a way of transporting you back in time, allowing you to connect with the past in a profound way. I am glad we were able to experience the evening illuminations at Kiyomizu-dera, as well.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Kyoto's imperial side, with visits to Nijo Castle, the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. I'm excited to delve deeper into the city's history and discover even more hidden gems. We might even do a bit of shopping at Kyoto LOFT. Until then, oyasumi nasai (good night) from Kyoto!
