Kyoto's Golden Greeting

Our first day in Kyoto unfolded like a meticulously crafted scroll, revealing glimpses of the city's soul through its iconic temples and tranquil gardens. After a long journey, the blend of anticipation and slight disorientation quickly dissolved as we stepped into a world where ancient traditions and modern life dance in harmony. It was a day of golden reflections, serene contemplation, and the delightful discovery of flavors that painted a vivid picture of Kyoto's culinary landscape.

Our day began, as most good days do, with breakfast. We ventured to Katsukura - Kyoto Porta, conveniently located near our hotel. The restaurant was bustling, a testament to its popularity, and we soon understood why. We indulged in their famous tonkatsu, a breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet. The crispy exterior gave way to succulent, tender pork, complemented perfectly by the savory tonkatsu sauce. It was a hearty and satisfying start to our Kyoto adventure. Astrid, of course, enjoyed it as well, though Maximilian had to cut it into tiny pieces for her.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As we approached the temple, the sight of the shimmering structure reflecting in the Mirror Pond took our breath away. The meticulous gold leaf work seemed to glow under the morning sun, creating a scene of ethereal beauty. It was truly a sight to behold. I was particularly struck by the history of Kinkaku-ji, originally built as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397 and later converted into a Zen Buddhist temple after his death. The fact that the pavilion had been rebuilt in 1955 after being burned down by a novice monk in 1950 only added to its mystique and resilience.

Walking around the pond, we admired the carefully manicured gardens and the strategic placement of stones and trees, each element contributing to the overall harmony of the landscape. I found myself reflecting on the symbolism of the gold leaf, intended to mitigate and purify any pollution or negative thoughts and feelings towards death. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of mindfulness and inner peace.

In Kyoto, every temple whispers a story, every garden invites contemplation, and every meal is a celebration of the senses.

Next on our itinerary was Ryoan-ji, home to Japan's most famous rock garden. After the opulence of Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji offered a stark contrast with its minimalist design and Zen atmosphere. The garden consists of fifteen rocks arranged in small groups on a bed of meticulously raked gravel, surrounded by low earthen walls. As we sat on the wooden platform, gazing at the garden, we were struck by its simplicity and the sense of tranquility it evoked. It was fascinating to learn that the garden's origins and meaning remain shrouded in mystery, inviting endless interpretations and contemplation.

One of the unique aspects of the garden is that from any vantage point, at least one of the rocks is always hidden from view. This subtle detail sparked a lively discussion between Maximilian and me about perspective, perception, and the elusive nature of truth. Astrid, meanwhile, was more interested in counting the visible rocks, a task that kept her happily occupied.

After immersing ourselves in the serene atmosphere of Ryoan-ji, our stomachs began to rumble. It was time for lunch, and we headed to Kizahashi, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Kyoto cuisine. The restaurant's ambiance was elegant and refined, with a touch of modern flair. We savored a multi-course meal featuring seasonal ingredients and delicate flavors. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and expertly prepared. I particularly enjoyed the delicate balance of flavors in the miso soup and the freshness of the sashimi. Astrid, surprisingly, enjoyed the tofu, a testament to its exceptional quality. Maximilian was impressed by the sake selection, curated by the restaurant's sommelier.

With the afternoon sun casting long shadows, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. We strolled through the Kyoto Crafts Store, a treasure trove of traditional Japanese crafts. From delicate ceramics to intricately woven textiles, the store showcased the skill and artistry of local artisans. I was particularly drawn to the lacquerware, with its rich colors and smooth textures. Maximilian admired the precision and craftsmanship of the samurai swords, while Astrid was captivated by the colorful kokeshi dolls. We ended up purchasing a few small souvenirs, tokens to remind us of our first day in Kyoto.

As evening approached, we made our way to Arash's Kitchen for dinner. After a day of Japanese cuisine, we were craving something different, and Arash's Kitchen, with its Persian and Indian halal dishes, seemed like the perfect choice. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We ordered a selection of kebabs, naan, and biryani, all bursting with flavor and aromatic spices. It was a delightful culinary journey to the Middle East and India, right in the heart of Kyoto. Astrid especially loved the naan bread, tearing off pieces and dipping them into the various sauces. Maximilian and I enjoyed the opportunity to try some Indian beers, a perfect complement to the spicy dishes.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's experiences. From the golden splendor of Kinkaku-ji to the serene contemplation of Ryoan-ji, and the culinary delights of Katsukura, Kizahashi and Arash's Kitchen, our first day in Kyoto had been a feast for the senses. We were grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful city and immerse ourselves in its rich culture.

Now, nestled comfortably in our room at the Ace Hotel Kyoto, I find myself eagerly anticipating tomorrow's adventures. According to our itinerary, we'll be visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha, with its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up a mountainside, and Tōfuku-ji Temple, known for its stunning Zen gardens. We're also planning to explore Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street for more local crafts and souvenirs. And, of course, we'll be trying out more of Kyoto's culinary offerings, with dinner at Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi. I have a feeling tomorrow will be just as memorable as today. I am a little concerned about the amount of walking Astrid will be doing, but I am sure she will be fine. I made sure to pack her favorite snacks, and Maximilian promised to carry her when she gets tired.

As I drift off to sleep, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement for the days ahead. Kyoto, with its blend of ancient traditions and modern life, has already captured our hearts. I can't wait to see what other treasures this enchanting city has in store for us.

I almost forgot! I realized I forgot sunscreen at home. I hope I can find some tomorrow, or I will get a sunburn. I also wish I had brought an umbrella, as the weather forecast predicts rain for the next few days. And a Japanese phrasebook would have been helpful, as not everyone speaks English here. But I guess that's part of the adventure!

Until tomorrow, sayōnara!
