A Day of Discovery in Hinterstoder
Today was all about embracing the unexpected, and Hinterstoder certainly delivered. Leaving the cozy embrace of our cabin, I felt a sense of anticipation for what the day would hold. The crisp mountain air invigorated me, and the promise of exploring the local culture and natural beauty was too exciting to resist. Plus, I was determined to find those sunglasses I forgot!
Our first stop was the Alpineum Hinterstoder Alpinmuseum. I've always been fascinated by local history, and this museum promised a glimpse into the past of the Stodertal valley. I convinced the guys that it would be a worthwhile visit, even though they were itching to get back on the slopes. I was curious to learn about the area's transition from a mountain farming village to a popular tourist destination.
Inside, the museum was a treasure trove of information. Exhibits detailed the dangerous lives of the woodcutters, the mountaineering history of the Toten Gebirge, and the evolution of skiing. They even had a ski simulator, which looked like fun. I was particularly drawn to the displays about the early days of skiing and how it transformed the region. It's amazing to see how much things have changed over the years. The museum was modern, made of wood and glass. I learned that the Alpineum is considered one of the 25 most original exhibition houses in Europe.
Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are the ones where you stumble upon unexpected treasures, both tangible and intangible.

After immersing ourselves in history, we decided to head towards Hutterer See. The guys were keen on seeing the lake, and I was looking forward to a scenic walk. The drive up was beautiful, with snow-covered trees lining the road. As we ascended, the views became even more breathtaking. The fresh mountain air was invigorating, and the silence was broken only by the crunch of our boots on the snow.
We parked near the Hössbahn cable car and began our trek towards the lake. The trail was well-maintained and easy to navigate, making it perfect for a leisurely winter hike. The guys were in high spirits, cracking jokes and playfully shoving each other in the snow. It reminded me of our younger days, when we would embark on similar adventures without a care in the world.
As we reached Hutterer See, I was struck by its serene beauty. The lake was frozen over, covered in a blanket of snow. The surrounding mountains provided a stunning backdrop, their peaks shrouded in mist. It was a scene straight out of a postcard. Despite the cold, there was a sense of tranquility that washed over me. We took some photos, capturing the moment and the beauty of the landscape. I can imagine that in the summer months, visitors can enjoy swimming, fishing and picnicking here.

After our walk, it was time for lunch. We headed to Karlhütte, a restaurant I had read about that was close by. The aroma of traditional Austrian cuisine wafted through the air as we stepped inside. The interior was cozy and inviting, with wooden tables and a fireplace crackling in the corner. We ordered a hearty meal of Wiener Schnitzel and Käsespätzle, savoring each bite. It was the perfect way to warm up after our chilly hike.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to explore the village of Hinterstoder. We strolled through the streets, admiring the charming houses and shops. The village had a quaint, old-world feel, and I couldn't help but feel transported back in time. We popped into a few souvenir shops, picking up small trinkets to remember our trip. I was still on the lookout for sunglasses, but no luck so far.
With the sun beginning to set, we decided to seek refuge in Pub Cafe' Na Und, a local bar known for its cozy atmosphere. The bar was dimly lit, with a warm and inviting ambiance. We ordered some Glühwein, a traditional mulled wine, and settled into a corner booth. As we sipped our drinks, we shared stories and laughter, reminiscing about past adventures and planning future ones. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

For dinner, we chose Gasthaus Seebauer, a restaurant known for its regional and organic cuisine. The restaurant was located near a lake, offering picturesque views. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and the staff were friendly and attentive. I was intrigued by their commitment to using locally sourced ingredients and their Bio Austria certification. I opted for a traditional Austrian dish, while the others tried some of the chef's specialties. The food was delicious, and I appreciated the emphasis on fresh, high-quality ingredients.
