Discover the peaceful side of Plitvice Lakes with a visit to hidden gems, local flavors, and serene landscapes. A perfect family escape!
Off the Beaten Path in Plitvice
Today was about slowing down and soaking in the quieter corners of Plitvice. After several days of marveling at the main attractions, Greta, Marko and I decided to explore some of the lesser-known spots, hoping to find a different kind of magic within this natural wonderland. We were seeking a day of serenity, a chance to connect with nature on a more intimate level, and maybe even discover a hidden gem or two.
We started our day with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant & B&B Plitvica Lodge. It's conveniently located and known for its tasty fish dishes and strong coffee – just what we needed to fuel up for a day of exploring. The reviews I had read mentioned the energetic staff and lovely atmosphere, and they were spot on. It was a great way to start the day, setting a positive tone for our adventures.
Our first stop was IVA, an ecological park I had read about. It promised a chance to see some local wildlife and enjoy the peace away from the crowds. Getting there was a bit of a drive, but the scenery along the way was beautiful. When we arrived, Marko was immediately excited by the playground and garden. Greta and I appreciated the tranquility and the chance to learn more about the local flora and fauna. It was a small, simple place, but it offered a welcome change of pace from the bustling trails of the main park area.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in the grand spectacles, but in the quiet corners where nature whispers its secrets.
Next on our list was Lugarnica Čorkova uvala, a national forest nestled within Plitvice Lakes National Park. The drive there was an adventure in itself, taking us through winding roads surrounded by lush greenery. This area is known for its pristine lakes, dense forests, and cascading waterfalls, creating a landscape perfect for both relaxation and exploration.

We followed the signs towards Čorkova uvala, a journey that took about 30 minutes from the park entrance. The anticipation built as we drove deeper into the forest, and the air grew noticeably fresher and cooler. Marko, of course, was thrilled with the idea of exploring a real forest.
Lugarnica Čorkova uvala turned out to be a true hidden gem. The area exuded tranquility, with hiking trails winding through the forest, offering breathtaking views and a chance to experience nature up close. We opted for a leisurely stroll, enjoying the vibrant colors and the peaceful sounds of the forest. The kids loved spotting different types of trees and flowers, and Greta, ever the nature enthusiast, pointed out various interesting plants and fungi.
I learned that Lugarnica Čorkova uvala was built in 1954 for the forestry service of the National Park. Forest workers lived there and were responsible for cutting trees and transporting logs using horses. Part of the building was even used as a stable. In 2019, after being neglected for thirty years, it was completely renovated and restored to its former glory.
For lunch, we decided to try Buffet Slap, located near Entrance 1. I had read mixed reviews, but we were drawn in by the promise of simple warm dishes and refreshing drinks. The buffet is housed in an inviting wooden structure, offering a shady retreat from the summer heat. Marko was happy with his hotdog and fries, while Greta and I opted for sandwiches and coffee. It wasn't gourmet cuisine, but it was satisfying and conveniently located.

As the afternoon wore on, we took some time to simply relax by one of the smaller, less crowded lakes. Marko skipped stones while Greta and I sat on a bench, enjoying the view and the peaceful atmosphere. It was a perfect moment of family bonding, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
For dinner, we chose Vila Velebita, a restaurant known for its delicious meat dishes and exceptional service. I had read rave reviews about their grilled trout and meat plate, and we were eager to try it out. The restaurant is about 10 km from Plitvice Lakes, offering beautiful views and a serene atmosphere.

We arrived at Vila Velebita just as the sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape. The wooden interior and rustic ambiance of the bistro immediately made us feel at home. We were warmly greeted by Richard, our host for the evening, who was incredibly kind and attentive. He helped us navigate the menu, recommending some local specialties that we were excited to try.
We started with the traditional Basa cheese, a local delicacy that was both creamy and flavorful. For the main course, Greta and I decided to share the meat plate, while Marko opted for the grilled trout. Every dish was prepared with fresh, local ingredients, and cooked to perfection. The meat was tender and juicy, and the trout was flaky and delicious. We savored every bite, enjoying the authentic flavors of Croatian cuisine.
Richard made our dining experience even more memorable with his friendly and attentive service. He shared stories about the region and made us feel like valued guests. Marko was particularly delighted by the restaurant's friendly cat, who seemed to enjoy helping us finish our plates. The portions were generous, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Vila Velebita truly lived up to its reputation as a top choice for visitors after exploring Plitvice Lakes National Park.
To cap off the evening, and since Greta was happy to look after Marko, I decided to check out Night Bar Kameleon in Otočac. It’s known for its vibrant atmosphere and is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. I don't often go out to bars, but I was curious to see what the nightlife was like in this part of Croatia.

The bar was indeed lively, with music and dancing creating an energetic vibe. I enjoyed a local beer and chatted with some of the other patrons. It was a fun, relaxed atmosphere, and I appreciated the chance to experience a different side of Croatian culture. I didn’t stay out too late, though, as I wanted to be fresh for our adventures tomorrow.
As I walked back to our accommodation, I reflected on the day. It wasn't about ticking off the main sights; it was about discovering the soul of Plitvice, connecting with nature, and enjoying simple pleasures with my family. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Mlinica - Old mill and Galovački Buk. I'm also hoping to visit Sirana Turkalj, Lika Quality, a local cheese shop. It promises to be another day of discovery, and I can't wait to see what it holds.
