A Day of Culture and Caves

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the rich tapestry of Croatian culture and venturing into the mysterious depths of the Pećinski park Grabovača. It was a day filled with new discoveries, intriguing stories, and a deeper appreciation for the natural and cultural treasures of this beautiful region.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bistro Kupaliste. I opted for a simple but satisfying burek, while Greta enjoyed some local cheese and Marko devoured a plate of scrambled eggs. With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set off to explore the Ethno Houses.

The Ethno Houses offered a fascinating glimpse into Croatia's past. The traditional wooden houses, surrounded by lush greenery, transported us to another time. We wandered through the grounds, admiring the architecture and imagining what life must have been like for the families who once called these houses home. Marko was particularly fascinated by the old tools and implements on display, peppering me with questions about their use. It was a wonderful opportunity to teach him about our heritage and the ingenuity of our ancestors.

After exploring the Ethno Houses, we hopped in the car and drove to Pećinski park Grabovača. This unique cave park is located near Perušić and is the only cave park in Croatia. As we approached, the landscape transformed into a captivating blend of rugged karst terrain and verdant forests. The air felt cooler, carrying with it the earthy scent of damp soil and ancient stone.

The earth has music for those who listen.

We met our guide, a friendly local with an encyclopedic knowledge of the park's geology and history. He led us towards the entrance of Špilja Samograd (Cave Samograd), the park's most famous cave. The entrance itself was awe-inspiring, resembling a grand cathedral carved into the hillside. We descended into the cool darkness, the temperature dropping noticeably as we ventured deeper.

Inside the cave, we were greeted by a breathtaking spectacle of stalactites and stalagmites, formed over millennia by the slow drip of mineral-rich water. The guide explained the geological processes that created these stunning formations, pointing out the different shapes and patterns. Marko's eyes widened in amazement as he gazed at the otherworldly landscape, his imagination running wild with stories of dragons and hidden treasures.

The cave is divided into several chambers, each with its own unique characteristics. The Frasova dvorana (Fras Chamber), Perušića dvorana (Perušić Chamber), Karlovićeva dvorana (Karlović Chamber) and Kukuljevića dvorana (Kukuljević Chamber). I couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder as we walked through these ancient spaces, marveling at the power of nature to create such beauty.

Emerging from the depths of the cave, we took a walk around the park. The guide showed us a sensory 'little herbal' garden and children's playgrounds. We followed one of the educational trails, learning about the unique plant and animal species that thrive in this karst environment. The trail led us to a breathtaking viewpoint, offering panoramic vistas of the Velebit slopes, the Lika River, and the rolling green hills.

Before leaving the area we did a bit of shopping at Plitvice Mall. Greta wanted to get some new hiking gear for our upcoming adventures and Marko needed a new football. The mall was very modern and had all the shops we needed.

After our subterranean adventure, it was time for a late lunch. We drove to Lička kuća, a restaurant renowned for its traditional Lika cuisine. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, with rustic decor that evoked the charm of a traditional Lika home.

We started with the Lika soup, a hearty broth filled with local vegetables and herbs. For our main courses, I opted for the lamb under the oven, while Greta chose the grilled trout. Marko, of course, went for the ćevapi, a classic Croatian dish of grilled minced meat. The food was delicious, bursting with the authentic flavors of the region. It was the perfect way to end our day of cultural and natural exploration. I had a glass of local wine, remembering my wine-tasting hobby back in Heidelberg. It felt good to connect with my Croatian roots through its food.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Restaurant Borje for dinner. The restaurant is located in a centuries-old pine forest and is the perfect place to escape from the hectic everyday life. The restaurant has a distinctive gastronomic offer and operates as an à la carte and self-service restaurant. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the cool evening air and the sounds of the forest. I ordered a steak, while Greta had a salad and Marko tucked into a plate of pasta. The food was excellent, and the service was friendly and attentive.

As we drove back to our accommodation, I reflected on the day's adventures. We had journeyed through time, explored hidden caves, and savored the flavors of Lika. It was a day that deepened our appreciation for Croatia's rich heritage and natural beauty. I am so glad I get to share these experiences with my family and, through this blog, with you.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore IVA and Lugarnica Čorkova uvala, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Night Bar Kameleon. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us in this beautiful corner of Croatia. Perhaps I'll even find some inspiration for my work in renewable energy solutions, drawing from the natural wonders around us.

Before I sign off, I wanted to share a little anecdote. While we were at Pećinski park Grabovača, Marko asked me if there were any real-life hobbits living in the caves. I told him that while there might not be actual hobbits, the caves were home to many fascinating creatures, like bats and cave salamanders. He was thrilled, and spent the rest of our visit searching for signs of these elusive creatures. It's moments like these that make our family trips so special, sparking Marko's curiosity and fostering a love for nature.

I am also reminded of something my grandmother used to say when we would visit historical places in Varaždin:

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

That saying really resonated with me today, and I think it perfectly captures the essence of our experiences at the Ethno Houses and Pećinski park Grabovača. Until tomorrow!
