A View from the Top and a Journey Underground

Today was all about seeing Plitvice Lakes National Park from different perspectives – both high above and deep within. It’s amazing how a single day can offer such varied and memorable experiences. I was eager to explore every nook and cranny with my family, and today’s itinerary certainly delivered.

Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Restoran Gurman. It’s a bit outside the immediate park area in Selište Drežničko, but well worth the short drive. The kids, especially Marko, were excited about the pancakes, and Greta and I enjoyed some traditional Croatian pastries. Fuelling up properly is essential before a day of hiking and exploring! I am glad to support the local economy while I am here, it is important to me.

With our stomachs full, we drove to Vidikovac Tomićevo Pogledalo, a viewpoint that promised stunning panoramic views. The drive itself was beautiful, winding through the lush forests surrounding the park. Once we parked, it was a short but moderately steep hike to the viewpoint. Even Marko managed it without too much complaining, which is always a win!

Reaching the top, we were rewarded with the most incredible vista. The Upper Lakes stretched out before us, shimmering in the sunlight. The viewpoint is at 685 meters above sea level, providing an elevated perspective that truly allows you to appreciate the scale and beauty of the park. I took dozens of photos, trying to capture the scene, but of course, no picture can truly do it justice. It was less crowded than the main trails, which allowed us to enjoy the tranquility and take our time soaking in the views. The air was fresh and clean, and the sense of peace was palpable. Marko was fascinated by the different shades of blue and green in the lakes, and Greta pointed out various birds soaring overhead. I felt so grateful to be able to share this moment with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

The beauty of Plitvice lies not just in its surface wonders, but also in the hidden depths waiting to be discovered.

After the breathtaking views, it was time for something completely different: exploring Golubnjača cave. This cave is located near Rastovača, a short drive from the main park area. The drive was easy and very scenic. The entrance to the cave is accessible via a wooden path along the lakes and stone steps.

As we descended into the cave, the temperature dropped noticeably, and the air became cool and damp. The kids were immediately excited, their imaginations running wild with stories of hidden creatures and underground adventures. Golubnjača is known for its stalactites and stalagmites, formed over thousands of years. Although some sources suggest that Golubnjača cave is closed to the public for conservation purposes , we were able to respectfully explore the cave. I made sure that Marko understood the importance of not touching anything and respecting the delicate ecosystem. The silence within the cave was profound, broken only by the occasional drip of water. It felt like stepping into another world, a hidden realm beneath the familiar landscape of Plitvice.

For lunch, we headed to Plitvice lakes Etno garden, a restaurant that promised traditional Croatian cuisine in a charming setting. The restaurant is located in Plitvica Selo, not far from the park entrance. The setting was indeed lovely, with a wooden summer terrace surrounded by lush greenery. We started with some local cheeses and prosciutto, followed by hearty portions of goulash and grilled trout. Marko, surprisingly, enjoyed the goulash, declaring it even better than Oma’s (Greta’s mother), which earned him a playful glare from Greta. I sampled some local wine, a robust red that perfectly complemented the meal. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home.

After lunch, we decided to take a break at Cafe Rapajinka. Located near the Lower Lakes canyon and the panorama train station, it was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the scenery. I enjoyed a cup of strong Croatian coffee while Greta and Marko shared a piece of apple strudel. The cafe had a lovely, laid-back atmosphere, and we enjoyed watching people pass by, all clearly enchanted by the beauty of the park.

For dinner, we chose Restoran Antemurale in Rastovača. This restaurant is known for its traditional Croatian dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We started with some local appetizers, followed by a delicious peka, a traditional Croatian dish of slow-cooked meat and vegetables. The flavors were rich and complex, and the meat was incredibly tender. Greta and I savored every bite, while Marko happily devoured a plate of grilled chicken. To cap off the meal, we shared a bottle of local wine, toasting to another wonderful day in Croatia.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we stopped by Cafe Rapajinka again for a nightcap. The cafe was still buzzing with activity, and we enjoyed the lively atmosphere. I had a glass of local beer, while Greta sipped on a herbal tea. Marko, tired from the day’s adventures, fell asleep in Greta’s arms.

Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit the Ethno Houses and Pećinski park Grabovača. We’ll start with breakfast at Bistro Kupaliste before heading out for the day. Lunch will be at Lička kuća, and dinner at Restaurant Borje. We might even squeeze in some souvenir shopping at Plitvice Mall.

Today was a fantastic blend of natural beauty, delicious food, and quality family time. Plitvice Lakes National Park continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. I am so glad that I decided to bring my family here to experience my home country.
