Day 2: Waterfalls and the Valley of Seven Lakes

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the alpine beauty of Triglav National Park. We set out with a plan to conquer some of its most iconic spots, and while the day presented its share of challenges, the rewards were absolutely breathtaking. It’s days like these that remind me why we love to travel as a family, pushing our boundaries and sharing incredible experiences together.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Foksner. We fueled up with some local fare, knowing we had a long day of hiking ahead. Marko was especially excited, chattering about the waterfalls he hoped to see. Greta and I exchanged knowing glances, hoping his little legs would hold up!

Savica Waterfall: A Baptism of Beauty

The first stop on our itinerary was the Savica Waterfall. The drive there was stunning, with glimpses of Lake Bohinj sparkling through the trees. Once we arrived, we embarked on a short but steep climb to reach the waterfall. The path was well-maintained, but those 553 steps definitely got our hearts pumping! Marko, surprisingly, took it all in stride, his little legs chugging along with determination.

Reaching the top, we were greeted by the majestic Savica Waterfall. The water plunged dramatically into an emerald-green pool below , creating a scene of raw, natural power. It was easy to see why this waterfall holds such a symbolic place in Slovenian culture. I couldn’t help but recall the words of France Prešeren, Slovenia's most famous poet, who immortalized Savica in his poem. The air was cool and misty, and the roar of the water filled our ears. We spent a good while simply taking it all in, snapping photos, and letting the beauty of the place wash over us.

Seven Lakes Valley: An Alpine Dream

Next on our agenda was the Seven Lakes Valley. This was the part of the day I was most looking forward to, and also the one I was most apprehensive about. The valley is known for its stunning alpine scenery, but also for its challenging hiking trails. We decided to take a route that started near the Savica Waterfall, which I knew would be demanding, but also incredibly rewarding.

The initial part of the hike was a steep ascent through a dense forest. The trail was rocky and uneven, and I was grateful for my trusty hiking boots. Marko, bless his heart, started to flag a bit, so we took frequent breaks to catch our breath and admire the views that were beginning to open up. Greta, ever the supportive wife, kept his spirits up with stories and songs. I made a mental note to pack insect repellent next time, as the little critters were having a field day with us [TripEssentialsForgotten].

As we climbed higher, the trees began to thin, and the landscape transformed into a breathtaking alpine wonderland. Jagged peaks pierced the sky, and meadows carpeted with wildflowers stretched out before us. And then, we saw the lakes.

Each lake was unique, with its own distinct character and charm. Some were large and expansive, their surfaces mirroring the surrounding mountains. Others were small and intimate, nestled among the rocks like hidden jewels. The water was crystal clear, and the colors ranged from deep blue to emerald green. It was a truly magical sight, and I felt a sense of awe and gratitude to be witnessing such beauty.

We continued our hike through the valley, stopping at each lake to take photos and soak in the atmosphere. Marko was re-energized by the stunning scenery, and he ran ahead, eager to explore each new vista. We even spotted some wildlife along the way – a few chamois grazing on a distant hillside, and a variety of birds flitting through the trees.

Lunch with a View at Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih

Our destination for lunch was Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih , a mountain hut located near the Double Lake. The hut was bustling with hikers, but we managed to find a table with a stunning view of the lake. We ordered some traditional Slovenian dishes – jota (a hearty bean and sauerkraut soup) and štruklji (rolled dumplings filled with cheese) – and devoured them with gusto. The food was simple but delicious, and it was the perfect fuel for the rest of our hike. Marko was particularly fond of the štruklji, and he polished off two helpings!

After lunch, we took some time to relax by the Double Lake. The lake is divided into two parts by a small isthmus, and the water was so clear that we could see the bottom. Marko skipped stones across the surface, while Greta and I simply sat and enjoyed the tranquility. It was a perfect moment of family bonding, surrounded by the stunning beauty of the Julian Alps.

The Descent and Evening Reflections

The hike back down was challenging, as our legs were starting to feel the strain. The weather in Triglav National Park can be unpredictable , and as we descended, the skies began to darken, and a light rain started to fall. We donned our rain jackets and pressed on, determined to reach our campsite before the downpour. Thankfully, the rain subsided as we reached the lower elevations, and we arrived at our campsite just as the sun was beginning to set.

After freshening up, we headed to Hiša Pr' Pristavc - gostilna in pizzerija in Bohinjska Bistrica for a well-deserved dinner. We opted for pizza, a crowd-pleaser for both young and old. The restaurant had a cozy, family-friendly atmosphere , and the pizza was delicious. Marko, exhausted from his day of hiking, fell asleep at the table, a testament to the day's adventures.

Later, Greta and I managed to sneak out for a quick drink at Kult Pub Bled in Bled. It was a lively spot with a great atmosphere, and it was the perfect way to unwind after a long day. We sipped on some local beers and chatted about our favorite moments of the day. It was a reminder that even on the most challenging of trips, there are always moments of joy and connection to be found.
