A Day of Ascent and Descent

Today was a day of contrasts, a true embodiment of Triglav National Park's diverse beauty. We started high, aiming for the clouds at Triglavski dom na Kredarici, and ended low, tracing the serene waters of Mostnica Gorge. It was a day that tested our legs and filled our hearts with awe, a perfect blend of challenge and tranquility that I'll cherish forever.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Bohinj Sunrose 7 in Bohinjska Bistrica. The hotel itself looked amazing and the breakfast was delicious. They offered a fantastic selection of local delicacies, including a variety of cheeses and homemade bread, which gave us the energy we needed for the day's adventures. Greta particularly enjoyed the selection of local jams, while Marko devoured a plate of scrambled eggs with gusto. Fully fueled, we set off towards our first destination: Triglavski dom na Kredarici.

The drive itself was a treat, winding through picturesque valleys and offering glimpses of the towering peaks that awaited us. As we approached the trailhead, the air grew crisper, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. The excitement was palpable, especially for Marko, who kept asking, Are we there yet? every five minutes. I had packed plenty of snacks and water, knowing that the climb to Kredarica would be demanding.

Reaching Triglavski dom na Kredarici was an experience in itself. While we didn't attempt to summit Triglav this time around, being at Slovenia's highest mountain hut, perched at 2,515 meters, was breathtaking. The views were simply stunning – a sea of jagged peaks stretching as far as the eye could see. Even in May, there were patches of snow clinging to the higher elevations, a stark reminder of the mountain's formidable nature.

The mountains are calling and I must go.

The hut was bustling with activity, climbers preparing for their ascent, hikers resting after a long trek, and meteorologists diligently monitoring the weather. Yes, Kredarica also serves as Slovenia's highest weather station! We explored the area around the hut, taking in the panoramic views and snapping photos to capture the moment. Marko was fascinated by the small chapel next to the lodge, while Greta simply enjoyed the serenity of the alpine landscape. I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment, knowing that we had reached such a significant point in the park.

After soaking in the atmosphere at Kredarica, we began our descent, our sights set on Mostnica Gorge. The change in scenery was dramatic as we transitioned from the stark, rocky terrain of the high mountains to the lush, green forest surrounding the gorge. The drive to Stara Fužina, the starting point for the Mostnica Gorge trail, was equally beautiful, passing through charming villages and alongside the pristine Lake Bohinj.

The hike through Mostnica Gorge was a delightful contrast to the earlier part of our day. The trail meandered alongside the crystal-clear Mostnica River, which has carved its way through the limestone over centuries, creating a series of stunning gorges, waterfalls, and pools. The air was cool and damp, filled with the sound of rushing water and the chirping of birds. Marko was thrilled to spot a few small fish in the river, while Greta was captivated by the vibrant green moss that covered the rocks.

The trail itself was relatively easy, making it perfect for a family hike. There were a few steps and some uneven terrain, but nothing too challenging. We took our time, stopping frequently to admire the scenery and take photos. One of the highlights was the Devil's Bridge (Hudičev Most), a stone bridge that spans the gorge at a dizzying height. According to legend, the bridge was built by the devil himself! Marko was suitably impressed, although Greta was more concerned about ensuring he didn't get too close to the edge.

We continued our hike through the gorge, eventually reaching the point where the Mostnica River flows into the Voje Valley. By this time, we were all feeling a bit peckish, so we decided to stop for lunch at Restaurant Majerca. This restaurant is known for its use of seasonal and local ingredients, combining mountain tradition and world cuisine. I opted for a traditional Slovenian dish, while Greta enjoyed a fresh salad with local cheeses. Marko, of course, chose the pasta. It was the perfect way to refuel after our hike.

After lunch, we took a leisurely stroll through the charming village of Stara Fužina, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the traditional architecture. Before heading back to our campsite, we made a quick stop at FromSlovenia Bled, a local shop, to pick up a few souvenirs. I was hoping to find some insect repellent, as I realized we had forgotten to pack it – a minor oversight that I'm sure the mosquitoes would be happy to exploit! We ended up buying some local honey and a few handcrafted items to remind us of our trip.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a meal at Old Cellar Bled. The restaurant is located a short walk from Lake Bled and specializes in Slovenian cuisine with a modern twist. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the food was delicious. I particularly enjoyed the fish dishes, while Greta raved about the selection of Slovenian wines. Marko, predictably, opted for a simple pasta dish, but even he admitted that it was exceptionally good.

As we sat there, enjoying our meal and reflecting on the day's adventures, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty of Triglav National Park with my family. It was a day of contrasts, from the high peaks of Kredarica to the serene depths of Mostnica Gorge, but it was also a day of connection, as we shared laughter, stories, and unforgettable moments together.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Waterfall Peričnik and Pocar Homestead. I'm particularly excited about visiting the waterfall, as I've heard it's a truly spectacular sight. And perhaps, we'll stop by Devil's Cafe & Bar in the evening for a drink and some local color before heading back to camp.
