Solo Adventure in Moulay Idriss: A Cultural Journey
Day 6: Fez's Spiritual Heart: A Day Immersed in History and Tradition
Exploring the sacred city of Moulay Idriss, indulging in Moroccan cuisine, and soaking up the vibrant culture of Fez. A solo journey.
A Day of Discovery in Fez and Moulay Idriss
Today was a day of deep immersion into the heart of Moroccan culture and history. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of Heidelberg, I embraced the vibrant chaos of Fez and the serene spirituality of Moulay Idriss. It's days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the transformative power of travel, especially when venturing off the beaten path.
My day began in Fez, where I hailed a taxi to take me to Moulay Idriss. The journey itself was an experience, the landscape transforming from bustling city streets to rolling hills dotted with olive groves. The air grew cleaner, carrying the scent of earth and distant farms. As we approached Moulay Idriss, the town shimmered in the morning light, a cluster of white buildings clinging to the slopes of two hills. It was immediately clear why this place holds such a sacred reputation.
My first stop was the Dar El-Makhzen, although, like many non-Muslims, I could only admire it from the outside. Even from a distance, the grandeur of the palace was evident, its intricate details hinting at the stories and histories held within its walls. It reminded me a bit of the palaces I've seen in Croatia, though with a distinctly Moroccan flair. The architecture spoke of power, artistry, and a deep connection to the land.

Next, I ventured towards Bab Boujloud, the iconic blue gate of Fez. The gate was teeming with life – vendors selling everything from spices to ceramics, and locals going about their daily routines. The vibrant colors and sounds were intoxicating, a sensory overload that I found both exhilarating and grounding. I paused to admire the intricate tilework, the blue a stark contrast to the ochre hues of the surrounding buildings. It struck me how this gate, built in the 12th century and restored in 1912, serves as a portal between the old and the new, a testament to the enduring spirit of Fez.

For breakfast, I had planned to visit SCORPION HOUSE, a place known for its stunning views and Moroccan breakfasts. Getting there was a bit of an adventure in itself, involving a climb up narrow, winding streets that were more staircase than walkway. But the effort was more than worth it. Perched high above Moulay Idriss, the Scorpion House offered a panoramic vista of the town and the surrounding countryside. The breakfast was a feast for the senses – fresh bread, local honey, olives, and mint tea, all enjoyed while soaking in the breathtaking scenery. It was the perfect start to the day.

The beauty of a place is not just in its sights, but in the way it makes you feel.
Lunch was at Haytam, a local restaurant recommended by a shopkeeper I met in the medina. I decided to try their tagine, a traditional Moroccan dish cooked in a clay pot. The aroma alone was enough to make my mouth water. The tagine was a symphony of flavors – tender meat, sweet vegetables, and a blend of spices that danced on my tongue. It was a hearty, comforting meal that filled me with warmth and satisfaction.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to La Baraka for dinner. This restaurant is known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and warm hospitality. I opted for the couscous, another classic Moroccan dish. The couscous was light and fluffy, topped with a generous serving of vegetables and meat. The flavors were subtle yet complex, a testament to the chef's skill and the quality of the ingredients. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and I found myself chatting with other travelers, sharing stories and experiences.

To cap off the evening, I decided to visit DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN, a local bar. The bar was cozy and intimate, with traditional Moroccan décor and soft lighting. I ordered a mint tea, a staple in Moroccan culture. Sipping the tea, I reflected on the day's experiences. The flavors of the tagine and couscous still lingered on my palate, and the images of the Dar El-Makhzen and Bab Boujloud danced in my mind. The mint tea was a soothing end to a day filled with sensory delights.

Today was more than just a day of sightseeing; it was a journey into the heart and soul of Morocco. From the grandeur of the Dar El-Makhzen to the vibrant chaos of Bab Boujloud, every moment was a lesson in history, culture, and the simple joys of life. I felt a sense of connection to this place, a sense of belonging that transcended borders and languages. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventure to the Site Archéologique de Volubilis and Place Moulay Hassan, I am filled with anticipation. I'm particularly excited about visiting the قيسارية مولاي ادريس shop tomorrow. I can't wait to see what new adventures and discoveries await.
I'm also mindful of the events happening around Moulay Idriss and Fez. The Moussem of Moulay Idriss Al Azhar, which celebrates the founder of Fez, is a significant event, drawing pilgrims and locals alike. While I didn't witness the main procession, the spiritual atmosphere was palpable throughout the city. It's these cultural events that add depth and richness to the travel experience, providing a glimpse into the traditions and beliefs that shape a community.
As I reflect on my solo journey, I'm reminded of the importance of sustainable travel. I made a conscious effort to support local businesses, eat at family-run restaurants, and engage with the community in a respectful manner. It's these small actions that can make a big difference, ensuring that tourism benefits the local economy and preserves the cultural heritage of the destination. I'm looking forward to continuing my exploration of Morocco, seeking out authentic experiences and sharing them with you all.
Back in Heidelberg, Greta and Marko would be getting ready for bed now. I miss them dearly, but I know that these solo adventures are important for my own growth and development. And who knows, maybe one day I'll bring them back here to experience the magic of Morocco for themselves.
Until tomorrow,
Ivan
