A Day of Discovery in Moulay Idriss

Today, I fully embraced the spiritual and cultural heart of Moulay Idriss. As a software engineer specializing in renewable energy, I often find myself immersed in the world of technology and future innovations. However, days like today remind me of the importance of connecting with history, tradition, and the human spirit. It's a balance I cherish, and I'm excited to share my experiences with you.

My day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Restaurant Moulay Idriss. The simple yet flavorful meal of bread, olives, and mint tea set the perfect tone for a day of exploration. Fuelling up with a mix of carbs and caffeine is always a good idea before a long day of exploring. The restaurant was cozy, filled with locals starting their day, and I enjoyed soaking in the authentic atmosphere. It's moments like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to immerse myself completely in the local culture.

My first stop was Le portail de Moulay Ismaïl باب مولاي إسماعيل. This majestic gateway is a stunning example of Moroccan architecture. Commissioned by Sultan Moulay Ismaïl in the 17th century, the portal serves as an entrance into the rich history of Meknes. The intricate tile work and elegant arches were truly captivating, offering a glimpse into the opulence of the sultanate era. I spent some time admiring the blend of Islamic and Baroque influences, snapping photos and simply soaking in the grandeur. The area around the gate was bustling with local life, a vibrant mix of residents going about their day and fellow travelers eager to explore.

Sometimes, the most enriching experiences come from simply wandering and allowing yourself to be led by the spirit of a place.

Next, I ventured to the Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er. As a non-Muslim, I couldn't enter the shrine itself, but even from the outside, the reverence of the place was palpable. The mausoleum commemorates Moulay Idriss I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty and a key figure in the spread of Islam in Morocco. The architecture was striking, with intricate tile work and serene courtyards. I found a quiet spot nearby to sit and reflect, taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The air was filled with the scent of local herbs and the soft murmur of prayers, creating a truly tranquil atmosphere. It was a powerful reminder of the deep spiritual roots of this region.

For lunch, I decided to try Cafe restaurant ain zwawk مقهى و مطعم عين زواوق. This charming café offered a delightful culinary experience with stunning views of the surrounding hills. I opted for a traditional tagine, savoring the rich flavors and spices that define Moroccan cuisine. The café had both indoor seating and outdoor terraces, and I chose a spot on the terrace to soak in the natural beauty of the area. The experience was enhanced by the friendly service and the relaxed ambiance, making it a perfect midday retreat.

After lunch, I was drawn to The Anou Cooperative. This wasn't just a shopping trip; it was an immersion into the heart of Moroccan artistry. The cooperative empowers local artisans, particularly women, by providing a platform to showcase their skills and connect with a broader audience. I was greeted by a warm atmosphere filled with colorful displays of handwoven rugs, textiles, and other beautifully crafted goods. Each product told a story, reflecting the craftsmanship passed down through generations.

I spent a considerable amount of time exploring the diverse range of offerings, from soft handspun yarns to stunning home decor items. As someone who appreciates sustainable living and ethical practices, I was particularly impressed by The Anou Cooperative's commitment to social responsibility. By purchasing items here, you directly contribute to the livelihoods of artisans and support initiatives that empower women in the local community. I ended up buying a beautiful handwoven rug, knowing that it was not only a unique piece of art but also a symbol of positive social impact.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Volubilis for dinner. Now, there appear to be multiple restaurants with this name, including one in Arles, France. However, I was looking for a place closer to Moulay Idriss. I ended up at a local spot that was recommended by a few residents. This Volubilis offered a cozy atmosphere and a menu filled with traditional Moroccan dishes. I enjoyed a flavorful couscous, reflecting on the day's adventures. The restaurant provided a perfect setting to unwind and savor the last moments of the day.

Reflecting on today's experiences, I'm struck by the seamless blend of history, spirituality, and community in Moulay Idriss. From the grand architecture of Le portail de Moulay Ismaïl to the serene atmosphere of the Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er, every corner of this town tells a story. The Anou Cooperative provided a meaningful connection to local artisans, and the delicious meals at Restaurant Moulay Idriss and Cafe restaurant ain zwawk were delightful culinary experiences. It's days like these that remind me why I embarked on this solo adventure in the first place – to discover the rich culture and hidden gems of Morocco.

As I prepare for tomorrow, I'm excited about the prospect of exploring Dar El-Makhzen and Bab Boujloud. I'm also looking forward to trying out some new restaurants, including SCORPION HOUSE for breakfast, Haytam for lunch, and La Baraka for dinner. And perhaps, I'll wind down the day with a visit to DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN. Each day brings new adventures, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds. Until then, goodnight from Moulay Idriss!

I've also realized that I forgot to pack sunscreen and a travel guidebook. I´ll try to find a local shop where I can buy them tomorrow.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a moment to reflect on the recent news. It seems the Moulay Idriss Al-Azhar Festival recently concluded in Fez, showcasing the region's vibrant cultural and spiritual traditions. Although I missed the festival itself, I felt a connection to its spirit through my experiences today. It's fascinating to see how these events bring together people from all walks of life to celebrate their shared heritage.

Also, I read about Morocco's official welcome of the Gaza ceasefire agreement. It's heartening to see diplomatic efforts being made towards peace and stability in the region. As a traveler, I believe it's important to stay informed about current events and understand the broader context of the places I visit. It adds depth and meaning to my experiences, making me a more informed and engaged global citizen.
