Solo Adventure in Moulay Idriss: A Cultural Journey
Day 2: Whispers of the Past: Exploring Volubilis and the Soul of Moulay Idriss
Journey back in time at Volubilis, then immerse yourself in the spiritual heart of Moulay Idriss. A day of history, views, and Moroccan flavors.
Echoes of Empires and Sacred Views
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through time and spirit. From the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, whispering stories of a bygone era, to the serene and holy town of Moulay Idriss, where the soul of Morocco seems to reside, it was an experience that resonated deeply. I woke up with a sense of anticipation, eager to delve into the history and culture that this region holds so dear.
My day began with breakfast at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk مقهى و مطعم عين زواوق. The morning air was crisp, a typical November chill that reminded me of the approaching winter back in Heidelberg. The cafe was bustling with locals, a vibrant scene that immediately immersed me in the rhythm of Moroccan life. I enjoyed a traditional breakfast of bread, olives, and mint tea, fueling up for the day's adventures. It's amazing how a simple meal can connect you to a place and its people. I made a mental note to try and recreate the mint tea back home for Greta and Marko; they would love it.
After breakfast, I hopped in a taxi to the Site Archéologique de Volubilis. As we approached, the ruins rose from the fertile plains, a testament to the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire. The weather was pleasant, with the sun casting a golden glow over the ancient stones. November in this region offers a mix of mild temperatures, perfect for exploring historical sites.

Walking through Volubilis was like stepping back in time. The site is remarkably well-preserved, with intricate mosaics, towering columns, and the remains of grand villas. I wandered through the ruins, imagining the lives of the people who once called this place home. The Triumphal Arch stood proudly against the skyline, a symbol of Roman power and ambition. I spent hours exploring the basilica, the thermal baths, and the House of Orpheus, each structure telling a story of a vibrant and sophisticated society. It was fascinating to see how the Romans had adapted their architecture and culture to this North African setting. I even overheard a tour guide mentioning that Volubilis was once the capital of the Amazigh kingdom before the Roman annexation.
The stones of Volubilis whispered tales of emperors and olive presses, a world where Roman ingenuity met Moroccan soil.
After immersing myself in the history of Volubilis, I had lunch at the Restaurant Volubilis, right next to the archeological site. I enjoyed a tagine with chicken and preserved lemons. The aroma of spices filled the air, and the flavors were a delightful blend of sweet and savory. It was the perfect way to refuel before continuing my exploration.
In the afternoon, I made my way to Moulay Idriss, a town that holds a special place in the hearts of Moroccans. As I approached, I could feel a palpable sense of spirituality in the air. Moulay Idriss is considered one of the holiest cities in Morocco, and it's easy to see why.
I strolled through the narrow, winding streets, admiring the traditional Moroccan architecture. The town is nestled in the hills, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. I made my way to the Small Terasse, which offered a breathtaking view of the mosque. The intricate details of the mosque's architecture were mesmerizing, a testament to the skill and artistry of Moroccan craftsmen. I spent some time simply soaking in the atmosphere, feeling a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me.

As the sun began to set, I found myself at Al Andaloussiya Diyafa for dinner. The restaurant was a beautiful example of a traditional Moroccan house, with a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I enjoyed a delicious meal of couscous with vegetables, savoring the flavors of Moroccan cuisine. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making me feel like a guest in their home. I must admit, being solo has its perks. You get to meet and talk to many more locals than if you were traveling as a couple or family. It reminds me a bit of my student days, backpacking through Europe.

After dinner, I decided to experience the local nightlife at DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN. The bar was lively, filled with locals and tourists alike. I enjoyed a glass of Moroccan wine, listening to the sounds of traditional music. It was a great way to unwind after a day of exploring, and I even managed to practice my French with some of the locals. I'm finding that my rusty French, combined with a few Arabic phrases, is enough to get by and often brings a smile to people's faces.

As the evening drew to a close, I reflected on the day's experiences. From the ancient ruins of Volubilis to the spiritual heart of Moulay Idriss, it had been a journey through time and culture. I felt a deep sense of connection to this place, a feeling that I knew would stay with me long after I left. I made my way back to my guesthouse, the cool night air a welcome contrast to the warmth of the day.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Mausoleum of al-Hadi ben Issa and the surrounding area of Zerhoun. I'm looking forward to delving deeper into the history and culture of this fascinating region. I've heard that Zerhoun offers even more stunning views and a chance to experience the authentic Moroccan way of life. Plus, I'm eager to try some of the local cuisine at La Baraka for breakfast and Grillade Albanna for lunch. And who knows, maybe I'll find a hidden gem at the زيارة باب مولاي إدريس shop.
Before drifting off to sleep, I took a moment to appreciate the quiet solitude of my room. Traveling solo has its challenges, but it also offers a unique opportunity for self-reflection and discovery. I'm grateful for the chance to explore this beautiful country and to share my experiences with you all.
I'm also reminded of Greta and Marko. I miss them dearly, but I know they're cheering me on from Heidelberg. I can't wait to bring back stories and souvenirs to share with them. Perhaps next time, we can all come together and experience the magic of Morocco as a family. Until then, I'll continue to explore and share my adventures with you. Good night from Moulay Idriss!
I am also very happy that I did not forget my camera, which is essential to capture all these beautiful moments. I did forget sunscreen and a travel guidebook, but I will try to buy them tomorrow. It is important to protect my skin from the sun and to have a guide to learn more about the places I visit.
November 11th has been a day to remember, filled with ancient history, spiritual insights, and the warmth of Moroccan hospitality. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings! This trip is exceeding all my expectations, and I'm excited to continue sharing my journey with you. I hope my stories inspire you to explore the world and discover the hidden gems that await us all.
