Solo Adventure in Moulay Idriss: A Cultural Journey
Day 3: Spiritual Echoes and Ancient Stones: A Day in Moulay Idriss and Zerhoun
Immerse yourself in the sacred heart of Morocco, exploring Moulay Idriss and the ancient ruins of Volubilis. A journey through time and faith.
Whispers of Faith and History
Today was a day of profound exploration, a journey into the spiritual heart of Morocco and a step back in time amidst ancient Roman ruins. Leaving the familiar comforts of Heidelberg behind, I found myself drawn into the captivating embrace of Moulay Idriss and the surrounding landscapes. It's amazing how much history and culture can be packed into a single day, and I'm eager to share every detail.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at La Baraka. The name itself, meaning blessing in Arabic, set the tone for the day. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast of fresh bread, olives, and mint tea, fueling up for the adventures that lay ahead. The air was crisp, and the town was slowly awakening, its sounds creating a vibrant ambiance. It reminded me of mornings back in Varaždin, where the scent of freshly baked bread would waft through the streets. After breakfast, I decided to visit the shop زيارة باب مولاي إدريس [Visit Bab Moulay Idriss] [Today's Itinerary]. It was an interesting visit, where I was able to find some local goods, and experience the local culture.
My first official stop was the Mausoleum of al-Hadi ben Issa in Meknes. Although technically just outside the Moulay Idriss region, it was a short and worthwhile detour. This sacred site is dedicated to al-Hadi ben Issa, a revered figure known for his spiritual teachings. The architecture was stunning, with intricate tile work and mosaics that told stories of faith and history. The serene atmosphere invited reflection, and I found myself lost in thought, contemplating the deep spiritual roots of Moroccan culture. It's fascinating how different cultures honor their religious figures; this mausoleum was a beautiful example of reverence and artistic expression. The mausoleum was reconstructed in 1776 by the Alaouite ruler, Mohammed ben Abdallah.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.
Next on the itinerary was the highlight I was most looking forward to: the town of Moulay Idriss itself, nestled at the foot of Mount Zerhoun. As I approached, the town unfolded before me, a cascade of whitewashed buildings clinging to the hillsides. Moulay Idriss is considered one of Morocco's holiest towns, named after Moulay Idriss I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty. Until recently, non-Muslims were not allowed to stay overnight, adding to its mystique. I wandered through the narrow, winding streets, each turn revealing a new and captivating vista. The air was filled with the sounds of daily life – children playing, vendors selling their wares, and the melodic call to prayer.
The heart of Moulay Idriss is the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss I, a place of pilgrimage for Moroccans. While non-Muslims cannot enter the mausoleum itself, I was able to admire its green-tiled roof and soak in the spiritual atmosphere of the surrounding square. It was a humbling experience to witness the devotion of the pilgrims who had come to pay their respects. I was reminded of the cathedrals back home, each with its own unique story and spiritual significance. I found myself a restaurant with a terrace, where I was able to have lunch, and admire the surrounding landscapes.
For lunch, I stopped at Grillade Albanna, a local favorite known for its grilled meats [Today's Itinerary]. I ordered a mixed grill, savoring the flavors of the perfectly seasoned lamb, chicken, and beef. It was a simple yet satisfying meal, a true taste of Moroccan cuisine. I enjoyed the meal with a refreshing mint tea, while enjoying the scenery.
In the afternoon, I ventured to Zerhoun Mountain. The mountain is north of Meknes, and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The landscape was breathtaking, a tapestry of rolling hills, olive groves, and fertile plains. From the summit, I could see the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis in the distance, a reminder of the region's rich and layered history.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Roman City for dinner [5, Today's Itinerary]. Despite the name, it was a traditional Moroccan restaurant, serving up tagines and other local specialties. I opted for a chicken tagine with olives and preserved lemons, a dish that perfectly captured the essence of Moroccan cuisine. The flavors were complex and aromatic, and the chicken was tender and succulent.

Before dinner, I took some time to reflect on the day's adventures. Moulay Idriss had exceeded all my expectations, offering a glimpse into a world of faith, history, and natural beauty. It was a day that will stay with me long after I leave Morocco. I also pondered about the next day. Tomorrow, I will be visiting Bab Rmila Natural Park and Kasabah Senhaji. I am excited to see what they have to offer.
Back in my guesthouse, I journaled about my experiences, capturing the sights, sounds, and smells of the day. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this fascinating region and share my adventures with you. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to discover new cultures, and to connect with people from all walks of life. As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of ancient stones, whispered prayers, and the warm hospitality of the Moroccan people. It's always a pleasure to experience new cultures, and Morocco has been nothing short of amazing. This solo journey has been good for me, and I'm excited to see what else Morocco has to offer. It's quite different from my life in Heidelberg, but I'm glad to have this experience.
And to Greta and Marko, I miss you both dearly! I can't wait to come back home and share all my stories.
