Amalfi's Heights and Ischia's Hidden Gems

Today was a day of contrasts, from scaling the heights of the Amalfi Coast to wandering through the serene gardens of Ischia. It’s amazing how much beauty can be packed into a single day when you’re exploring this part of the world. It felt like a true adventure, a journey that fed both my soul and my camera roll.

Our Saturday started early with a hearty breakfast at Terrazza 17. Fuelling up with strong Italian coffee and pastries was essential for the hike ahead. I met up with the guys, and we were all buzzing with anticipation for tackling Tre Calli Mountain.

I made sure to pack extra water, remembering the last time I underestimated the Italian sun, even in March!

The drive to the trailhead was stunning in itself, with the winding roads offering glimpses of the coastline. As we started our ascent, the views became increasingly dramatic. The path was challenging, a mix of steep inclines and rocky terrain, but the panoramic vistas kept us motivated. I remember thinking to myself how different this was from my usual coding environment back in Kelowna. It was a welcome change.

Reaching the summit of Tre Calli was an incredible experience. From that vantage point, the entire Amalfi Coast stretched out before us, a breathtaking tapestry of colourful towns and azure waters. I could spot Positano in the distance, and even thought I glimpsed Capri shimmering on the horizon. I took some photos, trying to capture the grandeur, but no image can truly do it justice. The air was crisp and clean, and there was a sense of accomplishment among our group.

It's not about the destination, but the journey and the views along the way.

After descending Tre Calli, we were famished. We headed to Ristorante Amalfi Cantina Miseria E Nobilta - Musica Dal Vivo for lunch.

The name itself was a mouthful, but the food was even better. We devoured fresh seafood pasta while enjoying some live music. It was the perfect way to refuel and soak in the vibrant atmosphere of Amalfi.

With the afternoon still ahead of us, we decided to take a ferry to Ischia, an island known for its thermal springs and lush gardens. It was a bit of a spontaneous decision, but that’s what I love about travelling with friends – the freedom to change plans and embrace new adventures. The ferry ride itself was a treat, with the sea breeze and stunning coastal views.

Upon arriving in Ischia, we made our way to Belvedere Mortella, a botanical garden created by Susana Walton, the widow of composer William Walton.

This place was an absolute oasis. The gardens are nestled into volcanic rock formations, creating a unique and enchanting landscape. I was particularly captivated by the exotic plants and the tranquil water features. It was a world away from the ruggedness of Tre Calli.

Wandering through Belvedere Mortella, I felt a sense of peace and serenity. The air was filled with the scent of flowers, and the sounds of birdsong echoed through the gardens. It was a perfect contrast to the earlier part of the day, a chance to unwind and reconnect with nature. I even managed to snap some photos of some particularly vibrant blossoms, thinking Olivia would love them. She has such a green thumb, and I know she would appreciate the beauty of this place.

As the day drew to a close, we took the ferry back to Amalfi. For dinner, we chose Ristorante La piazzetta, a charming spot in Piazza dei Dogi.

We savoured fresh seafood and handmade pasta, reminiscing about our adventures of the day. The restaurant, known for its fresh seafood and pasta, was the perfect end to a long day.

Before heading back to Hotel Villa Annalara charme and relax, I couldn't resist a bit of shopping at Stefania Boutique Amalfi.

I picked up a few souvenirs for Olivia and Thando, little reminders of our Amalfi adventure. I know Thando will love the little wooden boat I found for him; he’s always been fascinated by the sea.

Today was a whirlwind of experiences, from the challenging hike up Tre Calli to the tranquil gardens of Belvedere Mortella. It was a day that showcased the diverse beauty of the Amalfi Coast and its surrounding islands. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, our last day on this beautiful coast, where we plan to explore the Grotta delle Sirene and take an Amalfi Cruise. It’s hard to believe our trip is coming to an end, but I know the memories we’ve made here will last a lifetime.

As I sit here writing this, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such incredible places with my friends. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to share my adventures with the world. And while I miss Olivia and Thando dearly, I know that I’ll be returning home with a wealth of stories and experiences to share with them.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Grotta delle Sirene and Amalfi Cruises before heading back home. I am already looking forward to seeing my family, but I will definitely miss the Amalfi Coast!
