Exploring the Enchanting Amalfi Coast with Friends
Day 9: Hiking Through History: Amalfi's Trails and Hidden Gems
Discover Amalfi's allure beyond the coast. Hike through ancient valleys, savor local flavors, and embrace 'la dolce vita' with friends.
A Day of Discovery in Amalfi
Today was all about venturing beyond the postcard-perfect coastline and diving deeper into the heart of Amalfi. It's amazing how much history and natural beauty is packed into this relatively small area. I was eager to lace up my hiking boots and explore some of the trails that weave through the hills and valleys, promising a different perspective on this iconic destination. I planned a day filled with moderate activity, delicious food, and a touch of that famous Italian charm.
Our day began with breakfast at Stella Maris. I opted for a simple but satisfying meal of fresh pastries and strong Italian coffee. The café was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day. The aroma of freshly baked goods filled the air, and the promise of a day of adventure was palpable. Fuelled up, we set off towards Pogerola, a small village perched high above Amalfi. It was time to embrace the trails and discover the hidden gems of this coastal paradise.

The hike to Torre Di Pogerola was invigorating. The path wound its way uphill, offering breathtaking views of the coastline. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wildflowers and the distant sea. The trail was moderately challenging, a mix of rocky paths and steep inclines, but the views were more than worth the effort. As we ascended, the town of Amalfi shrank below us, replaced by a panoramic vista of rolling hills and sparkling blue waters.
Discover Torre Di Pogerola, a historic watchtower offering breathtaking views and a glimpse into Amalfi's rich past, nestled in the heart of the stunning Amalfi Coast.
I learned that the hike from Amalfi to Scala, near Pogerola, is a popular mountain trail. Although moderately difficult, it is known for fabulous views of the Gulf of Salerno, Amalfi, and Ravello. The combination of paved paths and narrow mountain trails makes it essential to have good shoes and plenty of water. I made sure I was prepared, and that allowed me to truly enjoy the experience.
Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are found not in the guidebooks, but in the unexpected detours and the willingness to explore beyond the familiar.
Reaching Torre Di Pogerola, we were rewarded with stunning panoramic views. The ancient tower stood as a silent sentinel, a reminder of the region's rich history. I imagined what life must have been like centuries ago, when this tower served as a watchtower, guarding against invaders. The views stretched as far as the eye could see, encompassing the coastline, the mountains, and the azure sea. It was the perfect spot for a breather and a photo session with my friends. Olivia would have loved this view; I made a mental note to bring her here someday.
After soaking in the scenery, we began our descent, making our way towards Valle dei Mulini. This 'Valley of the Mills' promised a different kind of adventure, a journey into a lush, green oasis hidden away from the bustling coastline. The trail led us through a dense forest, the air growing cooler and damper as we descended. The sound of rushing water grew louder, hinting at the hidden treasures that awaited us.
Explore Valle dei Mulini, a scenic hiking gem in Amalfi, Italy, rich in history and natural beauty, perfect for nature lovers and adventurers alike.
Valle dei Mulini was like stepping into another world. The valley is a deep crevasse, home to the ruins of ancient paper mills that once thrived in this area. The mills, built as far back as the 13th century, harnessed the power of the constant stream at the bottom of the valley to grind wheat. The valley’s landscape felt almost tropical, with thunderous waterfalls and moss-covered boulders. I was particularly fascinated by the protected species woodwardia radicans, a rare giant fern that dates back to prehistoric times. It felt like stepping back in time, a world away from the sun-drenched beaches and bustling piazzas of Amalfi.
The history of the valley is fascinating. Amalfi became one of the first locations in Europe to produce paper around the 1230s. The fresh water source running down the Valle dei Mulini made it an ideal setting for paper making, and Amalfi's paper was soon sold all over the Mediterranean. The ruins of the mills are now covered in vegetation, giving the valley an ethereal, almost magical quality. I could almost hear the echoes of the past, the sounds of the mills grinding and the voices of the workers who once toiled here.
After our hike, we were ready for a hearty lunch. We stopped at Amalfi Terminal, a restaurant near the port. I decided to try their pizza fritta, a local specialty. It was delicious, crispy and flavorful, the perfect reward after our morning of hiking. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, filled with tourists and locals enjoying the afternoon sun. I enjoyed watching the boats bobbing in the harbor as I ate, the sounds of the sea adding to the ambiance.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to indulge in a little 'dolce vita' at La Dolce Vita, a charming bar in Amalfi. I opted for a refreshing Aperol spritz, a classic Italian cocktail. Sitting outside, sipping my drink, I watched the world go by. The sun was warm on my skin, the air filled with the sounds of laughter and conversation. It was the perfect moment to relax and soak in the atmosphere of this beautiful town.

For dinner, we chose La Taverna del Duca. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured traditional Amalfi cuisine. I started with the spaghetti a limone, a local specialty that I had been eager to try. It was sublime, the perfect balance of lemon and pasta, a true taste of the Amalfi Coast. For my main course, I opted for the catch of the day, a beautifully grilled sea bass. The fish was fresh and flavorful, cooked to perfection. My friends enjoyed the calzone, which they said was the best they had ever tasted. We also ordered some eggplant, which was amazing, and some of the unreal chips that the restaurant is known for. The service was excellent, and the staff were friendly and attentive.

The spaghetti a limone is a popular choice, and the restaurant is praised for its friendly service and delicious food. It's a popular spot, so it's a good idea to make a reservation.
As the evening drew to a close, we strolled along the harbor, enjoying the cool sea breeze. The lights of Amalfi twinkled around us, creating a magical atmosphere. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. I felt a sense of contentment, a feeling of having truly experienced the heart and soul of Amalfi. As I walked, I thought about tomorrow's itinerary. We plan to visit Tre Calli Mountain and Belvedere Mortella, two more gems that promise to offer stunning views and unique experiences. I'm particularly excited about Belvedere Mortella, as I've heard it's a beautiful garden with a rich history.
