Through the Gorge and Above the Canopy

Today was a day of spectacular contrasts, a journey that took me deep into the heart of the rainforest and then soaring high above its emerald canopy. It was a day that reminded me why I chose Cairns for this solo adventure – the sheer, unapologetic beauty of nature. I’m still buzzing from the sights and sounds, and I can't wait to share the experience.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Lemoncello's Cairns. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee was the perfect start. I opted for a simple yet satisfying breakfast pizza, fueling up for the adventures ahead. It's amazing how a taste of Italy can feel so right in the middle of tropical Queensland. After breakfast, I headed towards Barron Gorge National Park.

I'd heard so much about it, and I was eager to see it for myself.

The first stop was the Kuranda Scenic Railway. The station itself was bustling with fellow travelers, all excited for the journey ahead. Finding my seat, I settled in, watching as the landscape transformed from urban sprawl to lush greenery. The anticipation was palpable. The train slowly started its ascent, chugging along the tracks that hugged the mountainside. The views were instantly captivating. The train wound its way through the dense rainforest, offering glimpses of cascading waterfalls and verdant valleys. The engineering marvel of the railway, built in the late 19th century, was truly impressive. It's hard to imagine the challenges those early engineers faced, carving a path through such rugged terrain.

The journey is the destination.

The train's recorded commentary provided fascinating insights into the history and ecology of the region. I learned about the indigenous Djabugandji people, who have a deep spiritual connection to this land, and about the diverse flora and fauna that call the rainforest home. It was both educational and enriching. One of the highlights of the train journey was the stop at Barron Falls. The falls were thundering down the gorge, a magnificent spectacle of raw power and natural beauty. The mist rising from the base of the falls created a rainbow, adding a touch of magic to the scene. I snapped a few photos, trying to capture the moment, but no image could truly do it justice.

Arriving in Kuranda, I found myself in a charming village nestled amidst the rainforest. The air was fresh and clean, and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. I strolled through the Kuranda markets, browsing the stalls selling local crafts, souvenirs, and indigenous art. It was a vibrant and colourful scene, a testament to the creativity and culture of the region. Lunch was at Villa Romana, an Italian trattoria known for its authentic cuisine and stunning views of the Coral Sea.

I opted for a classic pasta dish, savoring the flavors as I gazed out at the turquoise waters. It was a perfect moment of culinary bliss.

After lunch, it was time for the next adventure: the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. The cableway station was just a short walk from the village, and I eagerly boarded a gondola for the journey back down to Cairns. As the gondola glided silently above the rainforest canopy, I was treated to breathtaking panoramic views. The vast expanse of green stretched out before me, an unbroken tapestry of life and vitality. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the immense scale and complexity of nature.

The Skyrail made two stops along the way, allowing me to explore different aspects of the rainforest. At Red Peak Station, I took a guided boardwalk tour with a Skyrail Ranger, learning about the ancient tropical forests. The ranger's knowledge and passion were infectious, and I came away with a deeper appreciation for the intricate web of life that sustains the rainforest. Barron Falls Station offered more stunning views of the falls and gorge. I spent some time at the Rainforest Interpretation Centre, an interactive exhibit developed in conjunction with CSIRO. It was a fun and engaging way to learn about the science behind the rainforest ecosystem.

As the sun began to set, I arrived back in Cairns, feeling exhilarated and inspired. The day's adventures had filled my senses and nourished my soul. I decided to treat myself to a well-deserved dinner at Waterbar & Grill Steakhouse. The waterfront location was perfect, and the aroma of grilled meat wafted through the air, tempting my taste buds.

I ordered a perfectly cooked steak, savoring each bite as I watched the lights of the city twinkle across the water. The Waterbar & Grill Steakhouse is located inside The Pier shopping centre, which gave me the opportunity to browse the shops. The options for dining around Mantra Trilogy Cairns are plentiful, with many restaurants just minutes away. I'm glad I chose Waterbar & Grill for tonight's dinner.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out P.J.O'Brien's Irish Pub for a nightcap. The pub was lively and welcoming, with a great selection of beers and spirits.

I settled in with a pint of Guinness, enjoying the craic and camaraderie. I even overheard that P.J.O'Brien's has a fantastic $15 meal deal menu for lunch and dinner, which includes a free drink. I will definitely check that out next time!

As I walked back to my accommodation, I reflected on the day's experiences. The Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail Rainforest Cableway had provided a unique and unforgettable perspective on the beauty of Cairns. Tomorrow is my last day in Cairns, and I plan to explore the city's heritage with a self-guided walk, followed by a visit to the Cairns Art Gallery. I also plan to visit Oceana Walk Arcade for some last minute shopping. I can't believe my solo adventure is almost over! I will definitely come back with Olivia and Thando next time, and share the magic of Cairns with them. This trip has reminded me of the importance of taking time for myself, of reconnecting with nature, and of embracing the unknown. It's an experience I'll treasure forever.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy an adapter for Australian power outlets. It's a small detail, but one that would make my next trip much smoother. And perhaps a light rain jacket, just in case the tropical weather decides to surprise me again. These little reminders are part of the charm of travel, the lessons learned along the way. Good night, Cairns. Tomorrow, we say goodbye, but I take with me memories that will last a lifetime.
