Explore Cairns' beauty: from the Esplanade to lush gardens, savoring local flavors & embracing the city's vibrant heart on day one.
First Impressions of Cairns
The first day of any trip is always a mix of excitement and slight disorientation, and today was no different. Stepping off the plane in Cairns, the warm, humid air was a stark contrast to the crisp air I left behind in Kelowna. It felt like a warm hug, a welcome to this tropical paradise. I was eager to dive into the adventure that awaited me, exploring the city's attractions and soaking in its unique atmosphere. I was ready to see what Cairns had to offer.
After settling into my apartment at the Southern Cross Atrium Apartments, I decided to start my exploration with a leisurely stroll along the Cairns Esplanade.

The Cairns Esplanade is the heart of the city, a vibrant hub of activity, and it was the perfect introduction to Cairns life.

The Cairns Esplanade was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all enjoying the beautiful Thursday afternoon. The sun was shining, and a gentle breeze rustled through the palm trees lining the waterfront. I watched as families strolled along the paved paths, children laughed as they chased pigeons, and couples relaxed on benches, taking in the view of the Trinity Inlet. It was a vibrant scene, full of life and energy, and I immediately felt at home.
My first stop was the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon, a sprawling 4,800 square meter saltwater swimming pool that's free for everyone to use.

I was immediately struck by how popular it was. People of all ages were splashing around in the refreshing water, escaping the tropical heat. The lagoon is surrounded by sandy shores and timber decking, creating a beach-like atmosphere right in the heart of the city. I dipped my toes in the water, and it was the perfect temperature, a welcome respite from the humidity. I made a mental note to come back for a proper swim later in the week.
The best part of traveling solo is the freedom to change your plans on a whim. It's about discovering hidden gems and creating your own unique experiences.
For breakfast, I had planned to visit The Lillipad Cafe, a local favorite known for its generous portions and vegan-friendly options.

I ordered their famous Turkish Breakfast, a Mediterranean cold platter with roasted capsicum, olives, semi-dried tomatoes, artichokes, boiled free-range egg, feta cheese, avocado, tomato, Spanish onion, and cucumber on a bed of mesclun lettuce with pesto and Turkish toast. It was a feast for the eyes and the stomach, and the perfect way to start my day.
After breakfast, I decided to immerse myself in nature at the Cairns Botanic Gardens.

Explore Cairns Botanic Gardens, a stunning tropical haven showcasing diverse flora and providing a serene escape in Queensland's natural beauty.
A short bus ride took me to this lush oasis, a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The gardens are divided into several distinct sections, including the Flecker Garden, the Gondwana Heritage Garden, and the Zhanjiang Friendship Garden. I wandered along the shady pathways, admiring the diverse collection of tropical plants from around the world. The air was filled with the sweet fragrance of flowers, and the sounds of birds chirping in the trees.
One of the highlights of the Botanic Gardens was the Watkins Munro Martin Conservatory, a modern glasshouse that houses a collection of rare and delicate plants. I was mesmerized by the intricate details of the orchids, the vibrant colors of the bromeliads, and the strange beauty of the carnivorous plants. It was like stepping into another world, a hidden sanctuary of natural wonders.
I also explored the Aboriginal Plant Use Garden, where I learned about the traditional uses of native plants by the Indigenous people of the region. It was fascinating to discover how these plants were used for food, medicine, and tools, a testament to the deep connection between the Indigenous culture and the natural environment.
For lunch, I chose Perrotta's at the Gallery, an Italian restaurant adjacent to the Cairns Regional Gallery.

I opted for their spaghetti gamberi with sauteed prawns, Persian fetta, Calabrian chilli, parsley and lemon. The pasta was cooked to perfection, and the prawns were succulent and flavorful. The restaurant's patio was buzzing with activity, and I enjoyed watching people stroll by as I savored my meal. It was a perfect spot for people-watching, a delightful blend of urban life and natural beauty.
As the afternoon wore on, I decided to treat myself to a local craft beer at Three Wolves, a hidden bar tucked away in a laneway in the city center.

The bar had a cozy and intimate atmosphere, with dim lighting and exposed brick walls. I ordered a local IPA and chatted with the friendly bartender, who gave me some recommendations for other bars and restaurants to try in Cairns. It was a great way to unwind after a day of exploring.
For dinner, I had made a reservation at Salt House, a waterfront restaurant known for its seafood and stunning views of the marina.

As I arrived, the sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the water. I ordered the seafood platter, a generous assortment of fresh oysters, prawns, fish, and calamari. The seafood was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the views were simply breathtaking. It was the perfect way to end my first day in Cairns.
As I sipped on a glass of local wine, I reflected on my first day in Cairns. It had been a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and flavors, a perfect introduction to this vibrant city. I had explored the Esplanade, wandered through the Botanic Gardens, indulged in delicious meals, and discovered hidden bars. I was already falling in love with Cairns, and I couldn't wait to see what the rest of my trip had in store.
Before heading back to my apartment, I took one last stroll along the Esplanade. The city was alive with activity, the sounds of music and laughter filling the air. I watched as the Woven Fish sculpture in the lagoon shimmered under the moonlight, a symbol of the city's unique blend of art and nature. As I walked, I thought about my plans for tomorrow. I'm particularly excited to visit the Great Adventure and the Cairns Aquarium, promising another day filled with exploration and discovery. Before that, I'll grab breakfast at Coco's Kitchen + Bar, setting the stage for another day of adventure.
It's funny, isn't it? How a place so different from home can feel so familiar, so welcoming. Maybe it's the warm climate, or the friendly locals, or the laid-back atmosphere. Whatever it is, Cairns has already captured my heart. I'm looking forward to sharing more of my adventures with you in the days to come.
I'm also reminded of something my wife, Olivia, often says:
Travel isn't just about seeing new places; it's about seeing the familiar with new eyes.
And tonight, as I drift off to sleep, I'm excited to see what new perspectives tomorrow will bring.
Join me on a solo adventure to Cairns, Australia, where I'll explore the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest, and indulge in local culture.
