Day 5: Lakeside Serenity and Valley Wonders

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of Gran Paradiso National Park. We set out to explore its stunning landscapes, from the tranquil Lago Goletta to the vibrant Vallone dell'Urtier. The day promised a blend of scenic hikes, delicious food, and a taste of local culture, and it certainly delivered.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at La Lanterna del Duca [i]. The reviews I had read indicated a change in management, and I was curious to see if it lived up to expectations. The cozy atmosphere was immediately inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I ordered a simple yet satisfying breakfast of fresh bread, local cheese, and strong Italian coffee. Olivia opted for a fruit plate with yogurt, fueling up for our day of hiking. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent, a promising start to our day.

Fueled and ready, we drove towards Lago Goletta. The drive itself was a treat, winding through picturesque alpine roads with breathtaking views at every turn. As we ascended, the air grew crisper, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. We parked the car and began our trek towards the lake. The trail was well-marked and relatively easy, making it perfect for a leisurely morning hike. The landscape was dotted with vibrant wildflowers, adding splashes of color to the lush green meadows.

As we rounded a bend, Lago Goletta came into view, shimmering under the morning sun. The lake was surrounded by towering peaks, their reflections creating a mirror-like effect on the water's surface. It was a scene of pure serenity. We spent some time simply soaking in the beauty, taking photos, and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. I couldn't resist snapping a few shots of Olivia against the backdrop of the lake and mountains. She looked radiant, her blue eyes sparkling with joy. We even spotted a couple of marmots scurrying around the rocks, adding a touch of wildlife to our lakeside experience.

The beauty of Gran Paradiso isn't just in its majestic peaks, but in the quiet moments of connection with nature.

After our lakeside interlude, we drove towards Vallone dell'Urtier. This valley is known for its stunning natural beauty and diverse hiking trails, and I was eager to explore it. We parked in Lillaz, a charming village at the entrance to the valley, and began our hike. The trail started gently, winding through meadows and alongside a crystal-clear stream. As we ventured deeper into the valley, the landscape became more dramatic, with towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls.

The Vallone dell'Urtier is a haven for wildlife, and we kept our eyes peeled for any signs of ibex, chamois, or eagles. While we didn't spot any large mammals, we did see a variety of birds and butterflies, adding to the valley's vibrant ecosystem. The trail was also dotted with charming alpine huts, some of which offered refreshments and local products. We stopped at one such hut for a quick break, enjoying a refreshing glass of local apple juice and a slice of homemade cake.

As we hiked, I couldn't help but reflect on my childhood in Kimberley, South Africa. While the landscapes were vastly different, the sense of connection with nature was the same. I remember spending hours exploring the veld with my grandfather, learning about the local flora and fauna. Those experiences instilled in me a deep appreciation for the natural world, and I'm grateful to be able to share that with Olivia here in Gran Paradiso.

For lunch, we stopped at Le Barmé de l'Ours. This restaurant is known for its traditional Valdôtain cuisine, with a focus on local and seasonal ingredients. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I ordered the *seupetta à la valpellinentze*, a traditional bread and cheese soup, while Olivia opted for the *crespella aperta al grano saraceno con asparagi seras e messata*, a buckwheat crepe with asparagus and cheese. Both dishes were delicious, showcasing the region's culinary heritage. We paired our meal with a local wine, a crisp and refreshing white that perfectly complemented the flavors of the food. The restaurant even had vegan options, showing their commitment to catering to all dietary needs.

After lunch, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at MPC Maison Publique de la Cervoise. This bar is known for its wide selection of craft beers, and I was eager to sample some local brews. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, and the staff were knowledgeable and passionate about their beer. I tried a couple of different IPAs, each with its unique flavor profile. Olivia, not being a beer drinker, opted for a glass of local wine. We spent some time chatting with the locals, learning about the region's history and culture. It was a great way to unwind after a day of hiking and exploring.

Our dinner was at Hotel Sant'Orso - Mountain Lodge & Spa. The hotel's restaurant is renowned for its delectable Italian and international cuisine, and I was excited to experience it. The ambiance was elegant and refined, and the service was impeccable. I ordered the *osso buco*, a classic Italian dish of braised veal shanks, while Olivia opted for the grilled salmon with roasted vegetables. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, and the flavors were exquisite. We paired our meal with a bottle of Barolo, a rich and complex red wine that perfectly complemented the richness of the food. The hotel also caters to families with young children, making it an ideal choice for those traveling with kids.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our experiences. From the tranquil Lago Goletta to the vibrant Vallone dell'Urtier, Gran Paradiso National Park had captivated us with its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. The food had been exceptional, the people had been warm and welcoming, and the memories we had made would last a lifetime. As we headed back to our guesthouse, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible corner of Italy.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Arco di Augusto and Castello Sarriod de La Tour [see tomorrow's itinerary]. I'm looking forward to delving into the history and culture of this region, and I'm sure it will be another day filled with adventure and discovery.

I am also mindful that the Gran Paradiso Film Festival is running until August 10th, and Philosophical meetings are scheduled in Cogne in the coming days, but we will not have time to explore those further.
