Embark on an alpine adventure in Gran Paradiso, hiking Monte Creya, riding Funivie Gran Paradiso, and savoring local cuisine with Olivia.
Reaching New Heights
Today was a day of breathtaking views and invigorating climbs as Olivia and I explored more of Gran Paradiso National Park. We set out to conquer Monte Creya and experience the stunning Funivie Gran Paradiso. The crisp mountain air and the promise of panoramic vistas fueled our adventurous spirits.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Hotel du Grand Paradis - 1899 Auberge Boutique in Cogne. The hotel, with its charming, turn-of-the-century decor, offered a varied buffet that set us up perfectly for a day of hiking. I enjoyed a selection of local cheeses and some freshly baked bread, while Olivia opted for the fruit and yogurt. I always appreciate a good breakfast, and this one certainly hit the spot.
Fueled and ready, we headed towards Monte Creya. The drive itself was scenic, with winding roads offering glimpses of the stunning landscape that defines Gran Paradiso. As we drove along the SP47, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such natural beauty with Olivia. Arriving at the trailhead, we prepared for our ascent. I double-checked my camera gear, ensuring I wouldn't miss a single photo opportunity, while Olivia made sure our water bottles were full and our hiking boots were securely laced.
The hike up Monte Creya was challenging but rewarding. The trail was well-marked, but steep in sections, demanding a steady pace and a good deal of stamina. As we climbed, the views became increasingly spectacular. The rugged Alpine landscape stretched out before us, a tapestry of green valleys and rocky peaks. I paused frequently to capture the scenery, trying to convey the grandeur of the mountains through my lens. Olivia, ever the nature enthusiast, pointed out various wildflowers and explained the local flora.
Reaching the summit of Monte Creya was an exhilarating experience. The panoramic views were simply breathtaking. From the top, we could see the entire Gran Paradiso massif, its snow-capped peaks glistening in the August sun. We spent a good hour at the summit, soaking in the scenery and taking photos. It was a moment of pure joy, sharing such a stunning vista with my best friend and wife. Two thousand metres above the town, on the face of Monte Creya, are the remains of one of Europe's highest mines. Mining activities are believed to have begun during the Roman era. Between the 18th and 19th centuries, mining was the main source of income for the region.
The mountains are calling and I must go.
After descending from Monte Creya, we made our way to Funivie Gran Paradiso. Though I enjoy a good hike, I was keen to experience the views from a different perspective. The Funivie Gran Paradiso offers a convenient and scenic way to ascend further into the mountains, providing access to even more stunning vistas. We purchased our tickets and hopped aboard the cable car, excited for the ride.

As the cable car ascended, the views became even more impressive. We glided over forests and valleys, the landscape unfolding beneath us like a living map. Olivia and I pointed out landmarks and marveled at the sheer scale of the mountains. The ride was smooth and comfortable, allowing us to fully appreciate the scenery. I couldn't help but think of my son, Thando, and how much he would have loved this experience. I made a mental note to bring him here someday soon.
After our ride on Funivie Gran Paradiso, it was time for lunch. We chose Brasserie Les Pertzes in Cogne, enticed by its reputation for exceptional cuisine and traditional Valle d'Aosta ingredients. We were not disappointed. The restaurant had a cozy, mountain ambiance, and the staff were warm and welcoming. I ordered the venison with polenta, a local specialty, while Olivia opted for a vegetarian pasta dish. Both meals were delicious, showcasing the fresh, local flavors of the region. We paired our lunch with a bottle of local wine, savoring every sip as we recounted our morning adventures.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to explore the Alpine World Shop and Guides. I was hoping to find a detailed map of the park for future hikes, and Olivia was on the lookout for a unique souvenir. The shop was a treasure trove of outdoor gear, local crafts, and books about the region. I found a map that highlighted several trails I hadn't yet explored, and Olivia purchased a beautiful hand-painted ceramic ibex. The staff were knowledgeable and helpful, providing valuable insights into the park and its many attractions.

As evening approached, we made our way to Rifugio Le Fonti Minerali - Pizzeria - Ceresole Reale - Guide Alpine Valle Dell'Orco for dinner. This mountain refuge and pizzeria promised a rustic and authentic dining experience, and it certainly delivered. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with wooden beams and a roaring fireplace. We ordered a pizza made with local ingredients, and it was absolutely delicious. The crust was crispy, the sauce was flavorful, and the toppings were fresh and abundant. It was the perfect way to end a day of mountain adventures. Rifugio Le Fonti Minerali is also near popular rock climbing spots, it's an ideal base for adventure enthusiasts looking to tackle the breathtaking cliffs of Valle Dell'Orco. The knowledgeable staff are not only passionate about food but also offer insights into local climbing routes and guided tours for those eager to explore the natural wonders surrounding them.

As we drove back to our guesthouse, I reflected on the day’s experiences. We had conquered Monte Creya, soared through the mountains on Funivie Gran Paradiso, savored delicious local cuisine, and explored a charming Alpine shop. It was a day filled with adventure, beauty, and shared moments with my beloved Olivia. Gran Paradiso National Park continues to exceed my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural wonders and cultural experiences. It is particularly thanks to the Park that the ibex has been saved from extintion and today is present in the protected area with almost 2800 specimens. The Gran Paradiso National Park was created in 1856 by appointment of King Vittorio Emanuele as a royal hunting reserve in order to preserve the last surviving colony of alpine ibex or steinbock.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Lago Goletta and Vallone dell'Urtier, and perhaps enjoy a drink at MPC Maison Publique de la Cervoise [Ceresole Reale]. I am already looking forward to another day of discovery in this stunning corner of Italy.
I am truly grateful for these experiences and the opportunity to share them with you all. Until tomorrow!
