Salgadeira's Embrace & Park Adventures
Today was a day of pure, unadulterated connection with nature. The kind of day that reminds you why you travel, why you seek out these incredible places. It was a day filled with stunning vistas, refreshing waters, and the simple joy of being present in the moment. Chapada dos Guimarães continues to surprise and delight at every turn.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Pousada e Restaurante São Gabriel - Chapada dos Guimarães MT [i]. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of a day filled with exploration set the perfect tone. After fuelling up, we made our way to Mirante da Salgadeira, a spot I had been eagerly anticipating [i].

The drive itself was a treat, with the landscape unfolding before us in a tapestry of greens and browns. As we approached, the towering cliffs and lush vegetation hinted at the beauty that awaited.
Stepping out of the car, I was immediately struck by the panoramic view. The Mirante da Salgadeira offered a sweeping vista of the surrounding plains, a seemingly endless expanse stretching out to the horizon [i]. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wildflowers and damp earth. I spent a good while simply soaking it all in, letting the vastness of the landscape wash over me. Thando would have loved running around here, exploring every nook and cranny. I made a mental note to bring Olivia and him back someday; they would be blown away by this view.
The Complexo Turístico da Salgadeira is more than just a pretty view. It’s a place steeped in history, once a vital route for cattle drivers who salted their meat here to preserve it. Now, it’s a beautifully renovated park offering trails, a waterfall, a restaurant, and even a museum with a replica of dinosaur bones found in the area. The kids would have loved the dinosaur replica. We took our time exploring the trails, each turn revealing a new perspective of the stunning scenery. The walking areas are well-maintained and easy to navigate. The Salgadeira waterfall itself was a sight to behold. The water cascaded down the rocks, creating a soothing melody that filled the air. I couldn't resist dipping my toes in the cool, refreshing water, a perfect respite from the midday sun.
Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
After our time at Salgadeira, we headed to Parque da Chapada dos Guimarães, eager to delve deeper into the heart of this natural wonderland [i].

The park spans a vast area, encompassing dramatic cliffs, numerous waterfalls, and diverse ecosystems. As we drove through the park, I was struck by the sheer scale of it all. The red rock formations stood in stark contrast to the vibrant green vegetation, creating a landscape that felt both ancient and timeless.
We decided to embark on one of the many hiking trails, choosing one that promised a view of the Véu de Noiva waterfall. The trail wound through the forest, the air thick with humidity and the sounds of birdsong. It was a moderate hike, with a few steep inclines, but the promise of the waterfall kept us motivated. Along the way, we encountered a variety of flora and fauna, from colourful butterflies to curious monkeys peering down from the trees. I tried my hand at capturing some of the beauty with my camera, hoping to do justice to the vibrant colours and intricate details of the natural world.
Finally, after what felt like an age, we reached the Véu de Noiva waterfall. And it was everything I had hoped for and more. The water plunged down from a great height, creating a misty veil that shimmered in the sunlight. The sheer power and beauty of the waterfall were awe-inspiring, a testament to the forces of nature that have shaped this landscape over millennia. We spent a long time simply gazing at the waterfall, mesmerized by its constant movement and the soothing sound of the water crashing against the rocks below.
For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Windy Hill, a local favourite known for its authentic Brazilian cuisine [i, 6].

I opted for the *vaca atolada*, a traditional dish of beef ribs served with cassava. It was hearty, flavourful, and the perfect way to refuel after our hike. The restaurant itself had a charming, rustic atmosphere, with friendly staff and a relaxed vibe. It was the kind of place where you could easily spend hours chatting and enjoying the company of friends.
As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to a well-deserved dinner at Restaurante Véu De Noiva [i].

The restaurant is known for combining local flavours with a contemporary twist. I savoured every bite. The setting was magical, with soft lighting and the sound of the nearby waterfall creating a romantic ambience. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and exploration.
Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a pit stop at Guilas Beer [i].

It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and the beer was cold and refreshing. I chatted with some of the locals, exchanging stories and laughter. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with new people and cultures. I sampled a local brew, a Xaraés Cervejaria creation if I remember correctly, and savoured the unique flavours. I even made a note to check out 251 Beer Aroeira sometime, known for its vibrant atmosphere and local brews.
As I sit here now, writing this entry, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences of today. Chapada dos Guimarães has a way of captivating you, of drawing you in with its natural beauty and warm hospitality. It’s a place that nourishes the soul and reminds you of the simple joys of life. I am looking forward to tomorrow's itinerary, which includes Poço das Esmeraldas and Lookout Morro dos Ventos [i]. I have heard wonderful things about both, and I am eager to explore more of what this incredible park has to offer. I am also thinking of picking up some local indigenous art at Leo Rocha Arte Indígena, as I want to bring back something special for Olivia and Thando [i]. Tonight, however, I will rest and dream of waterfalls, cliffs, and the magic of Chapada dos Guimarães. This trip is exactly what I needed. A reminder of the beauty of the world and the importance of connecting with nature and friends.
