A Day of Enchantment
Today was all about immersing ourselves in the raw, untamed beauty of Chapada dos Guimarães National Park. From cascading waterfalls to panoramic canyon vistas, every moment felt like stepping into a living postcard. It was a day filled with exploration, laughter, and a deep appreciation for the natural wonders that Brazil has to offer. Join me as I recount our adventures, from the refreshing embrace of Cachoeira Encantada to the awe-inspiring heights of Canions Do Jamacá.
Our seventh day in Chapada dos Guimarães began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Popular. It's a local spot known for its affordable and delicious home-style meals. I opted for the classic *arroz com pequi* (rice with pequi fruit) , a traditional dish from this region, while some of my friends went for the *bife acebolado* (steak with onions). Fuelled up and ready for the day, we set off towards our first destination: Cachoeira Encantada.
Cachoeira Encantada: A Magical Waterfall
The drive to Cachoeira Encantada was an adventure in itself, with the winding roads offering glimpses of the stunning landscapes that define this national park. The anticipation grew with every turn, and when we finally arrived, the sight that greeted us was nothing short of breathtaking. Cachoeira Encantada, or the Enchanted Waterfall, truly lives up to its name. The water cascades down into a wide, deep pool that’s perfect for swimming. Unlike some of the other waterfalls in the area, the water here doesn't fall directly onto rocks, making it ideal for visitors to fully enjoy. The water was so clear and refreshing; it was impossible to resist taking a dip.

We spent a good couple of hours swimming and basking in the sun. I even tried my hand at some underwater photography, hoping to capture the magic of this place. Thando would have loved this spot! I made a mental note to bring Olivia and him back here someday. It's moments like these that remind me why I love exploring new places – the simple joy of connecting with nature and creating lasting memories with friends.
After drying off and packing up, we hit the road again, this time heading towards Canions Do Jamacá, also known as Rota do Índio.
Canions Do Jamacá: Journey Through the Canyons
The drive to Canions Do Jamacá took us through more of Chapada's rugged terrain. As we approached, the landscape transformed into a series of striking canyons and lush greenery. This area is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers, and I could feel the excitement building as we got closer.
Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.
Canions Do Jamacá, or Jamacá Canyons, also known as Rota do Índio (Indian Route), features a series of four waterfalls: Jatobá, Fadas, Cipó, and Índio. Each of these waterfalls has a unique charm and appeal. We hiked along the trails, taking in the vibrant colors of the rock formations and the sounds of birds chirping. The trails are considered an easy 2km walk. The owners of the land are actively involved in reforestation efforts.

The first waterfall we encountered was Cachoeira do Jatobá, known for its crystal-clear waters and tranquil setting. It was the perfect spot to relax and soak in the natural beauty. Next, we visited Cachoeira do Cipó and Cachoeira do Índio, both famous for their natural hydromassage. We spent some time under the cascading waters, letting the gentle currents massage our shoulders and backs. The unique rock formations at Cachoeira do Índio provided a stunning visual and sensory experience.
Unfortunately, we missed Cachoeira das Fadas, as it’s a seasonal waterfall. But even without seeing all four, the experience was incredible. We spent hours exploring the canyons, taking photos, and simply enjoying the serenity of the surroundings. It was a great way to connect with nature and escape the hustle and bustle of city life. I couldn't help but think about how much Thando would have loved exploring these canyons and discovering hidden waterfalls. He has such a keen interest in nature, and I know he would have been captivated by the unique rock formations and diverse wildlife.
A Taste of Local Flavors
After a full day of exploring waterfalls and canyons, we were all starving. We drove to Restaurante Samambaia for a hearty lunch. This restaurant is known for its regional cuisine and generous portions. I decided to try the *arroz com frango* (rice with chicken) , while others opted for the *porco com arroz* (pork with rice). The food was simple, homemade, and incredibly satisfying.

For dinner, we decided to try O LUGAR. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and the menu featured a variety of local dishes. I ordered the grilled fish, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. We shared stories and laughs over dinner, reminiscing about the day's adventures. It was the perfect way to end another incredible day in Chapada dos Guimarães.

Evening Brews at Cervejaria Xaraés
To cap off the evening, we headed to Cervejaria Xaraés. This local brewery is a gem, offering a wide selection of handcrafted beers made with locally sourced ingredients. I opted for their signature IPA, while my friends tried the Pilsem and Hop Lager. The brewery has a lively atmosphere, with both indoor and outdoor seating. We enjoyed our beers while listening to live music and soaking in the vibrant energy of the place.

Cervejaria Xaraés is more than just a brewery; it’s a celebration of local culture and flavors. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a long day of exploring and reflect on the incredible experiences we had. I made a mental note to bring some of their craft beers back home to Kelowna for Olivia and my rugby buddies.
As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the natural wonders of Chapada dos Guimarães. Today was a reminder of the importance of connecting with nature and cherishing the simple joys of life. From the refreshing waters of Cachoeira Encantada to the stunning vistas of Canions Do Jamacá, every moment was a gift.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Cachoeira do Pingador and Mirante das Cachoieras [Cachoeira do Pingador (waterfall) and Mirante das Cachoieras (viewpoint of waterfalls)] [Day 8 Itinerary]. I’m also hoping to find some time to visit Eddy Eddy Shop [Day 8 Itinerary].
Until then, *até logo* from Chapada dos Guimarães!
