Day 1: First Day Wonders: Waterfalls, Lookouts, and Stone Cities in Chapada dos Guimarães
An immersive journey through Chapada dos Guimarães' iconic landmarks: Véu de Noiva waterfall, High Heaven Lookout, and the mystical Stone City.
A Journey Begins
After months of planning and anticipation, the day finally arrived! Our adventure in Chapada dos Guimarães National Park began, and I couldn't have been more excited. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of Kelowna, I was eager to embrace the raw beauty and untamed spirit of Brazil. With my friends by my side, I knew this trip would be one for the books.
The journey from Cuiabá to Chapada dos Guimarães was an experience in itself. The landscape transformed from urban sprawl to rolling hills and vibrant greenery. The anticipation grew with every mile, and as we approached the park, the air felt different – cleaner, crisper, and full of promise. Our first stop: Restaurant Windy Hill for breakfast.

The morning air was still cool as we sat down to enjoy a hearty Brazilian breakfast. Pão de queijo, fresh fruit, and strong coffee fueled us up for the day’s adventures. The restaurant offered a stunning view of the surrounding landscape, a perfect introduction to the natural beauty that awaited us. After breakfast, we packed our essentials – camera, water bottles, and sunscreen – and set off to explore Cachoeira Véu de Noiva.

Cachoeira Véu de Noiva: A Bridal Veil of Water
The trail to Cachoeira Véu de Noiva, or Bridal Veil Waterfall, was an easy walk, even for someone as used to the moderate hikes of the Okanagan Valley as I am. The path was well-maintained, and the anticipation built with every step as we listened to the increasing roar of the water. Finally, we arrived at the lookout point, and the sight was simply breathtaking.
The waterfall cascaded down from a height of nearly 90 meters, creating a misty veil that shimmered in the sunlight. The surrounding cliffs were adorned with lush vegetation, and the air was filled with the refreshing spray of the falls. I couldn't resist snapping dozens of photos, trying to capture the sheer beauty and power of the moment. We spent a good hour there, simply soaking in the view and enjoying the cool mist on our faces. I even spotted a few colorful macaws flying near the waterfall, which made for a truly unforgettable photo opportunity.
Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
After Véu de Noiva, hunger started to kick in, so we headed to Restaurante Véu De Noiva for lunch.

Situated close to the waterfall, it was the perfect spot to refuel before our next adventure. I opted for a traditional Brazilian dish – feijoada – a hearty stew of black beans and pork. It was delicious and exactly what I needed to replenish my energy.
High Heaven Lookout: A Panoramic Vista
With our bellies full and spirits high, we drove to the High Heaven Lookout, also known as Mirante Alto do Céu.
Breathtaking panoramic views of Chapada dos Guimarães' stunning landscapes from this must-see lookout point. Perfect for sunset!
The drive itself was scenic, winding through the park's diverse landscape. As we ascended, the views became increasingly impressive, offering glimpses of the vast plains stretching out before us.
Arriving at the lookout, I was immediately struck by the panoramic vista. From this vantage point, we could see the entire Chapada dos Guimarães region, with its dramatic cliffs, lush forests, and rolling hills. The colors of the landscape were incredible, a vibrant mix of greens, reds, and browns. I could even make out the distant city of Cuiabá, a testament to the sheer scale of the view.
We spent a long time at the lookout, taking in the scenery and enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. It was the perfect spot for relaxation and reflection, a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and simply appreciate the beauty of nature. I made a mental note to visit again during sunrise or sunset, as I heard the views are even more stunning during those times.
Stone City: An Ancient Metropolis
Our final stop for the day was Stone City, or Cidade de Pedra, a collection of unique rock formations that resemble an ancient metropolis.

The drive to Stone City took us through a different part of the park, showcasing the region's diverse geology. As we approached, the landscape transformed into a surreal panorama of towering sandstone structures, sculpted by centuries of wind and rain.
Exploring Stone City felt like stepping into another world. The rock formations were unlike anything I had ever seen, resembling buildings, towers, and monuments. It was easy to let my imagination run wild, picturing the stories and legends behind these ancient stones. We hiked through the area, marveling at the intricate details of the formations and enjoying the sense of adventure. The sun began to set as we were exploring, casting long shadows and creating a magical atmosphere. The red and orange hues of the sunset painted the stone structures in a warm glow, making the scene even more surreal.
Dinner and Reflections

We shared our favorite moments, laughed at our mishaps, and marveled at the incredible beauty we had witnessed. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Chapada dos Guimarães.
Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a quick stop at Escritorio Bar for a nightcap.

The bar had a lively atmosphere, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the evening air. I sipped on a caipirinha, a traditional Brazilian cocktail, and soaked in the vibrant energy of the place.
Reflecting on the day, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Chapada dos Guimarães had exceeded all my expectations, offering a blend of natural beauty, adventure, and cultural immersion. I was excited for what tomorrow would bring, with plans to explore the Circuito das Cachoeiras and Cachoeira do Pulo. I was also looking forward to trying Bistrô da Mata for breakfast, Restaurante Popular for lunch and Restaurante Samambaia for dinner. And maybe even do some shopping at Art'inPedra.
As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but smile. This trip was already proving to be an unforgettable experience, and I knew there were many more wonders waiting to be discovered in this magical corner of Brazil. I was also glad that I had my friends with me, as sharing these experiences with them made it even more special. Although, I did miss Olivia and Thando terribly, and promised to bring them here one day. And perhaps next time, I'll remember to pack that portable phone charger and rain jacket that I forgot!
