Through the Blue Gate and Beyond

Today was all about soaking in the authentic essence of Chefchaouen, venturing beyond the typical tourist spots to find the true heart of this blue-washed city. Lena always says I get too caught up in ticking off the main attractions, so today I made a conscious effort to wander, to get lost, and to simply observe. And what a rewarding day it turned out to be!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Lyajor Tiskit. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our explorations. It’s these simple, local experiences that I truly cherish, a far cry from the rushed breakfasts I usually grab in Berlin before heading to the office. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the flavors back home, perhaps surprising Lena and Sophia with a Moroccan-inspired brunch one weekend.

Fueled and ready, we set out to explore, our first stop being Bab Chaouen. It wasn't just an entry point to the city; it felt like stepping into another world. The gate, with its intricate designs, framed the blue-washed buildings perfectly, offering a picturesque view that I couldn't resist capturing with my camera. I tried to imagine all the people who had passed through this gate over the centuries, each with their own stories and purposes. It’s humbling to think about the layers of history beneath our feet, a stark contrast to the relatively young city of Berlin where I now live.

Wandering deeper into the town, we stumbled upon Casa Familia, a place that immediately exuded warmth and hospitality. While we weren't staying there, we were drawn in by the inviting atmosphere. We sat for a while, enjoying mint tea and chatting with some of the guests. It felt like being welcomed into a family home, a testament to the genuine hospitality of the Moroccan people. The staff were incredibly kind, offering tips and recommendations for exploring Chefchaouen, and sharing stories about the local culture. It reminded me of the cozy bed and breakfasts you find in Charlottesville, Virginia, where hospitality is a way of life.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.

For lunch, we decided to try Café Sindibad, a spot recommended by our new friends at Casa Familia. The café was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the traditional Moroccan dishes. I opted for a tagine, a slow-cooked stew that was bursting with flavor. The spices, the tender meat, and the aroma transported me to another world. Lena would have loved this place; she always appreciates authentic culinary experiences. I made sure to take some photos to show her later, hoping to inspire a similar dish at home.

After lunch, we strolled through the town, eventually finding ourselves drawn to some Original Moroccan Clothes. The vibrant colors and intricate designs were captivating. I couldn't resist buying a beautiful djellaba, a traditional Moroccan robe, for Lena. I think she’ll look stunning in it, and it will be a lovely reminder of our trip. I also picked up a small, intricately carved wooden box for Sophia, something she can keep her little treasures in.

As the afternoon sun began to cast long shadows, we decided to take a break at Café Mundial. This café seemed to be a local favorite, with people chatting, laughing, and sipping coffee. I ordered a traditional Moroccan mint tea, its sweet and refreshing taste a perfect complement to the warm afternoon. Sitting there, watching the world go by, I felt a sense of peace and contentment. It’s moments like these that make travel so rewarding, a chance to slow down, to appreciate the simple things, and to connect with the local culture.

For dinner, we ventured to Restaurant Jbaria, a place known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and family-friendly atmosphere. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with traditional décor and a warm, welcoming staff. We ordered a variety of dishes, including couscous, tagine, and grilled meats, all of which were delicious. The flavors were rich and complex, showcasing the best of Moroccan cuisine. It was the perfect way to end a day of culinary exploration.

Before heading back to Hotel Dar Mounir, we made one last stop at Café Mundial for a nightcap. The café was still buzzing with activity, and the atmosphere was lively and festive. We sat outside, enjoying the cool evening air and the sounds of the city. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. As I sipped my coffee, I reflected on all that we had experienced. We had ventured beyond the typical tourist spots, discovered hidden gems, and connected with the local culture in a meaningful way. It was a day of pure immersion, a day that I will always cherish.

Tomorrow marks the end of our Moroccan adventure, and we plan to make the most of it. Our itinerary includes visiting the Chefchaouen Gate and the Ensemble d'artisanat complexe, promising more opportunities to explore and discover. We’ll start with breakfast at مطعم داركم, followed by lunch at Galitos, and a final dinner at Restaurant Hamsa. I also hope to do some last-minute souvenir shopping at La Vida Colorada and relax at COFFEE BREAK chaouen before we head to Tangier.

As I prepare for our final day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we’ve had and the memories we’ve created. Morocco, and Chefchaouen in particular, has captured my heart, and I know that I will carry a piece of this magical place with me wherever I go.

I'm already anticipating sharing our stories with Lena and Sophia, reliving the adventures through photos and tales. Perhaps this trip will inspire our next family vacation. Until then, I'll cherish these moments and continue to seek out authentic experiences, wherever I may roam. After all, as I've learned here in Chefchaouen, the true beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.

It’s been a great trip with my friends, and it will be great to see Lena and Sophia again soon!
