A Fond Farewell

As our time in Chefchaouen draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the kaleidoscope of experiences we’ve shared in this enchanting blue city. From the labyrinthine streets to the vibrant markets and the stunning mountain vistas, Chefchaouen has woven its magic around us, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. It’s hard to believe our 11-day adventure is already coming to an end, but the memories we’ve made will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Our final day began, as many others did, with a hearty breakfast at مطعم داركم. The terrace offered a familiar, comforting view of the town awakening, the soft morning light painting the blue walls in even gentler hues. I savored the last of the traditional Moroccan pastries and mint tea, knowing I’d soon be back in Berlin, trading this serene vista for the hustle and bustle of city life. It’s moments like these, surrounded by friends and immersed in a culture so different from my own, that make me appreciate the opportunities travel provides. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these flavors back home, a small way to keep the spirit of Chefchaouen alive in my kitchen.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we decided to spend our morning exploring the Chefchaouen Gate. It wasn't just an entrance to the city, but a vibrant hub of activity, a place where locals and tourists mingled, and where the essence of Chefchaouen's culture was palpable. The gate itself is an architectural marvel, and I couldn't resist capturing a few last photos of its intricate details bathed in the morning sun.

As we wandered through the gate, we were immediately drawn into the bustling energy of the surrounding area. Small shops lined the streets, each one overflowing with handcrafted goods, colorful textiles, and unique souvenirs. The air was filled with the aroma of spices and the sounds of bartering, creating a sensory feast that was both invigorating and overwhelming. Despite my best efforts to pack light, I couldn't resist picking up a few small mementos to bring back home to Lena and Sophia. A hand-painted ceramic bowl for Lena, perfect for serving tagines, and a soft, woolen scarf for Sophia, to keep her warm during the Berlin winter. I even found a small, intricately carved wooden box that I thought would be perfect for storing my photography equipment.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.

Our next stop was the Ensemble d'artisanat complexe, a treasure trove of Moroccan craftsmanship. This wasn't just a shopping trip; it was an immersion into the artistic heart of Chefchaouen. I watched artisans at work, their hands moving with practiced skill as they transformed raw materials into intricate works of art. From colorful textiles to intricately carved woodwork, each piece told a story of tradition and creativity. I was particularly fascinated by the woodworking, a craft that seemed to be everywhere in Chefchaouen. I learned that the craft is particularly popular with French, Italian, and English tourists.

Lunch beckoned, and we found ourselves at Galitos, a restaurant recommended by several locals. The menu was a delightful mix of Mediterranean and Moroccan flavors, and I opted for the chicken with orange. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was relaxed, and the company was, as always, exceptional.

In the afternoon, we explored La Vida Colorada, a shop that promised unique finds. The shop was as vibrant and colorful as its name suggested, filled with an eclectic mix of clothing, jewelry, and home decor items. I spent a happy hour browsing the shelves, chatting with the friendly owner, and soaking up the bohemian atmosphere. I even managed to find a beautiful, hand-woven rug that I knew would look perfect in our living room in Berlin.

As the day wound down, we sought refuge at COFFEE BREAK chaouen, a charming espresso bar known for its quality coffee and serene ambiance. Sipping on a strong, aromatic brew, I reflected on our time in Chefchaouen, the conversations, the laughter, and the shared experiences that had brought us closer together. The cafe was a perfect spot to unwind and soak in the last moments of our trip, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the iconic blue walls of the city.

For our final dinner, we chose Restaurant Hamsa, drawn in by its reputation for vegan-friendly options and authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm, family atmosphere that made us feel right at home. I decided on the vegan falafel, which was absolutely delicious, bursting with flavor and spices. As we ate, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip, the unexpected encounters, and the breathtaking sights that had filled our days. It was a bittersweet moment, knowing that our adventure was coming to an end, but also feeling grateful for the memories we had created.

Tomorrow, we leave Chefchaouen, heading back to Tangier for our flight to Berlin. While I’m looking forward to seeing Lena and Sophia, a part of me will remain here, wandering the blue streets and soaking in the Moroccan sun. This trip has been a reminder of the importance of stepping outside of our comfort zones, embracing new cultures, and cherishing the bonds of friendship. Chefchaouen, you’ve been a dream. Thank you for the memories.

Chefchaouen is known as the Blue Pearl of Morocco. Some locals say that the walls of Chefchaouen are painted in all shades of blue to represent the color of the Mediterranean Sea. Others believe that the blue symbolizes the importance of the Ras el-Maa waterfall, where the city's inhabitants get their drinking water. Whatever the reason, attracting tourists is one of the main reasons why this practice continues. In Chefchaouen, you can find textiles of different kinds, including traditional handicrafts. You can also find woodwork. Leather products are also popular in Chefchaouen. You can find fresh cheese and olives as well.

As I prepare to leave this mesmerizing town, I carry with me not only souvenirs but also a renewed sense of wonder and appreciation for the world and its diverse cultures. Chefchaouen has been more than just a destination; it's been an experience that has enriched my soul and broadened my perspective. I encourage anyone seeking an authentic and unforgettable travel experience to add Chefchaouen to their list. You won't be disappointed.

Until next time, Chefchaouen. شكرا جزيلا!

As I reflect on my time in Chefchaouen, I am reminded of a quote by Ibn Battuta, the famous Moroccan scholar and explorer:

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.

And so, as I prepare to return to Berlin, I am filled with stories to tell, memories to share, and a longing to return to this magical blue city once again. Chefchaouen, you have captured my heart, and I will carry your spirit with me wherever I go.

I hope you have enjoyed following my journey through Chefchaouen. Stay tuned for more travel adventures!
