Today was a delightful immersion into the heart of Franconian Switzerland, filled with historical sights, culinary delights, and of course, a taste of the local brew. It’s days like these that make travelling so rewarding, when you stumble upon hidden gems and create memories that will last a lifetime. I'm always eager to share these experiences with you all, so grab a pint, settle in, and let me tell you about my day.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at the Arivo Aparthotel Restaurant, our home base here in Forchheim.

Fuelled up and ready to go, Olivia and I, along with our friends, set out to explore the town. Our first stop was the Maximilian Fountain.
Discover the stunning Maximilian Fountain, an emblem of Bamberg's rich history and artistic heritage, nestled in the heart of this charming Bavarian city.
Located in the heart of Forchheim, the Maximilian Fountain is a sight to behold. Commissioned by King Maximilian II in 1572, it was initially built to provide a reliable water supply to the city. Over time, it has become a symbol of civic pride and a popular meeting spot. As I stood there, admiring the intricate details of the fountain, I couldn't help but think about the countless stories it could tell. It's amazing how a simple water source can evolve into such an important landmark.

Next on our itinerary was lunch at Schlehenmühle Inn.
Experience authentic Franconian cuisine at Schlehenmühle Inn in Egloffstein - where tradition meets tranquility.
This charming restaurant is nestled in the picturesque town of Egloffstein, a short drive from Forchheim. The drive itself was a treat, with rolling hills and quaint villages dotting the landscape. Upon arriving at Schlehenmühle Inn, we were immediately captivated by its idyllic setting. The inn is housed in a beautifully restored mill, dating back several centuries. The interior is cozy and inviting, with exposed wooden beams and rustic décor.
We were greeted warmly by the staff and shown to our table. The menu featured a variety of traditional Franconian dishes, made with locally sourced ingredients. I opted for the Schäufele, a roasted pork shoulder that is a regional specialty. Olivia, ever the adventurous one, chose the Sauerbraten, a marinated beef dish served with dumplings and red cabbage. Both were absolutely delicious, and we savoured every bite. To complement our meal, we ordered a couple of local beers. The Franconian region is known for its brewing traditions, and we were eager to sample some of the local offerings. The beer was crisp and refreshing, the perfect accompaniment to our hearty lunch. After lunch, we took a stroll around the grounds of the inn. There was a lovely beer garden, a playground for the kids, and even a mini-golf course. It was the perfect place to relax and unwind after a satisfying meal.
As the afternoon wore on, we made our way back to Forchheim, eager to experience more of what the town had to offer. Our final stop of the day was Castle Worth for dinner.
Experience exquisite Swiss cuisine amidst breathtaking views of Rhine Falls at Castle Worth – where history meets flavor.
Situated in a historic castle, the restaurant promised an elegant dining experience, and it certainly delivered. The ambiance was sophisticated and refined, with candlelight and soft music creating a romantic atmosphere. The menu featured a mix of Mediterranean and Swiss cuisines, with an emphasis on fresh, seasonal ingredients. I decided to try the trout, while Olivia went for the veal. Both dishes were expertly prepared and beautifully presented. The service was impeccable, and we felt like royalty as we dined in the castle.
Before heading back to the Arivo Aparthotel, we decided to make a pit stop at Atzelsberger - Gaststätte & Biergarten.
Experience the best of Franconian cuisine and local beers at Atzelsberger - a charming beer garden in Marloffstein.
A perfect way to end the day, we thought, and we were right. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with locals and tourists alike mingling and enjoying the evening. I opted for a classic Franconian Helles, while Olivia chose a refreshing Radler (a mix of beer and lemonade). We sat at one of the long wooden tables, soaking in the atmosphere and chatting with our friends. It was the perfect way to wind down after a day of exploring.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Franconian Switzerland. From the historical Maximilian Fountain to the culinary delights of Schlehenmühle Inn and Castle Worth, every moment was a treasure. And, of course, the perfect end to the day at Atzelsberger Biergarten with a refreshing beer.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Naturpark Fränkische Schweiz - Veldensteiner Forst, so stay tuned for more adventures in this beautiful region. I'm already looking forward to discovering what new gems await us.
Until then, prost!
Reflecting on today, it's the simple moments – a shared laugh over a delicious meal, a quiet moment of reflection by a historic fountain, or a toast with friends in a lively beer garden – that truly make a trip unforgettable. It's these experiences that remind me why I love to travel and share my adventures with all of you.
