A Day of Discovery Beyond the Art Houses

Today was all about diving deeper into Naoshima, beyond the celebrated museums and installations that initially drew us here. Olivia, Ethan and I decided to explore the island's quieter corners, seeking out the spots where art and local life intertwine. It's amazing how much more you can appreciate a place when you slow down and wander without a strict agenda.

Our morning started, as it often does, with a quest for good coffee. We found ourselves at Akaito Coffee, a charming café near Miyanoura Port. The red-brick exterior and cozy interior were immediately inviting. It felt like stepping back in time, with vintage signage and soft lighting creating a relaxing atmosphere. I ordered their Akaito Blend, hand-dripped and made from beans roasted in-house. Olivia had a gateau chocolat, which she declared was the perfect complement to the coffee. Ethan, surprisingly, opted for a hot chocolate and a scone. Akaito Coffee wasn't just a caffeine stop; it was a moment to breathe and appreciate the unhurried pace of island life.

The best journeys are those that lead you to unexpected discoveries, revealing the soul of a place one hidden gem at a time.

Fueled by caffeine and pastries, we set off to find the Walking Ark, an open-air museum in Ogicho. The walk itself was a treat, taking us through quiet residential streets and past meticulously maintained gardens. Eventually, we arrived at the Walking Ark and were greeted by a collection of sculptures set amongst beautifully landscaped gardens. The sculptures, inspired by Noah's Ark, looked like white and blue mountains with legs, a reminder of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Ethan, with his keen interest in architecture, was fascinated by how the artwork blended with the natural surroundings.

Next on our list was Gokurakuji Temple. Nestled beside the Minamidera art house, the temple offered a moment of quiet reflection. The temple was serene, and we took some time to appreciate the traditional architecture and the peaceful atmosphere. I lit some incense and said a prayer for good fortune, while Olivia admired the intricate details of the temple's design. Ethan, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the historical significance of the temple, reading aloud from our travel guidebook.

Lunch called, and we decided to try NaoPAM/ Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda. Located near the I♥Yu bathhouse, this restaurant offers a variety of dishes, including fresh seafood and locally grown vegetables. Olivia and I shared a fish set meal, while Ethan devoured a plate of karaage (Japanese fried chicken). The food was simple but delicious, and the cozy atmosphere made it feel like we were dining in someone's home.

After lunch, we made our way to the Seaside Gallery, designed by Tadao Ando. The gallery is located in a terraced plaza on the south side of Benesse House Museum, overlooking the ocean. The long, narrow space is flooded with light, creating a beautiful setting for the art on display. The current exhibition featured thematic artworks reflecting the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea. I particularly enjoyed the way the gallery's design framed the views of the sea, blurring the lines between art and nature.

Our final stop of the day was the Art Island Center. This combination gallery, bookshop, and art center is dedicated to exploring the identity and resilience of the islands of the Setouchi region. We browsed the collection of art books and local publications, learning more about the island's artistic heritage. Ethan picked up a book on Japanese architecture, while Olivia found a collection of local poetry. I was intrigued by the center's projects and programs, which aim to foster conversations about globally significant topics. We also saw an exhibit by artist Rina Tajima.

For dinner, we chose Nagomi, a restaurant located within the Naoshima welfare center. This unique setting creates a welcoming atmosphere where locals and tourists can enjoy hearty Japanese meals. We ordered a variety of set meals, including tempura, grilled fish, and miso soup. The food was comforting and satisfying, and the communal setting allowed us to chat with some of the locals.

Reflecting on today, I'm struck by how much Naoshima has to offer beyond its famous museums. The island's temples, galleries, and local businesses provide a glimpse into the heart and soul of this unique community. It's these experiences that truly make a trip memorable. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to explore the Art House Project: Haisha and the Teshima Art Museum. I've heard the Teshima Art Museum is an impressively fluid building embedded in the landscape, offering a sensory experience as a single piece of artwork. Before that, we'll grab breakfast at maimai , a hamburger café that boasts to be the originator of the Naoshima Burger. And after a day of art, we may end up at Naoshima Yokocho, a local bar. It will be another day of immersing ourselves in the art and culture of the Seto Inland Sea.
