Explore Phong Nha Cave, savor local cuisine at The Rice House, Son Doong & Lotus Restaurant, and shop at Phong Nha Collection with Olivia.
Exploring the Heart of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park
Today was a deep dive into what makes Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park so special. Olivia and I set out to experience the caves and the local flavors, and it turned out to be a day filled with awe-inspiring sights and delicious tastes. The weather was pleasantly warm, with a slight breeze that made exploring comfortable. It's amazing how much this park has to offer.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at The Rice House. I opted for the tomato tofu, while Olivia enjoyed the tofu with eggplant. It's always a treat to find vegetarian options that are clearly marked and delicious. The Rice House had a lovely atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore the main attraction: Phong Nha Cave.

The boat ride to the cave was an experience in itself. Drifting along the river, surrounded by the stunning karst landscape, was incredibly peaceful. As we entered Phong Nha Cave, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. The stalactites and stalagmites created a surreal, otherworldly environment. The cool, fresh air inside the cave was a welcome respite from the humidity outside. We explored both the wet and dry caves, marveling at the natural formations that have taken millions of years to create. Olivia, with her librarian's eye, was particularly fascinated by the geological history of the cave. I couldn't help but snap photos at every turn, trying to capture the beauty of this natural wonder.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the quietest of places.
After our cave exploration, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Son Doong Restaurant, hoping to sample some authentic Vietnamese dishes. The restaurant had a rustic charm, with cozy cabins and huts that offered a private dining experience. We ordered a set platter of various local specialties, and it was more than enough to satisfy our appetites. The portions were generous, and the flavors were incredible.
In the afternoon, we decided to do a bit of shopping at Phong Nha Collection. I was on the lookout for a unique souvenir to remind me of our time here, while Olivia wanted to find some local handicrafts. The shop had a great selection of items, and we both found something we liked. The store itself was lovely, and the staff were helpful. As we browsed, I couldn't help but think about Ethan back home in Kelowna. I picked up a small, hand-carved wooden boat for him, hoping it would inspire his own sense of adventure.
For dinner, we chose Lotus Restaurant - Phong Nha. The restaurant is known for its artfully presented dishes, and we were not disappointed. I tried a local specialty, while Olivia enjoyed a vegetarian dish with fresh herbs and spices. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.
As we walked back to our accommodation, we reflected on the day's adventures. Phong Nha Cave was truly a highlight, and the local cuisine was a delightful surprise. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Hang Va Cave and Tien Son Cave. I’m also looking forward to a drink at Victory Road Villas. It’s hard to believe this trip is coming to an end, but I know we’ll have incredible memories to take back home. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – the chance to see new things, taste new flavors, and connect with different cultures. And of course, sharing it all with Olivia makes it even more special. Thinking about the next adventure and planning the next trip already!
