A Fond Farewell

As our family adventure in the Kerala Backwaters draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of gratitude and melancholy. These past two weeks have been nothing short of magical, a vibrant tapestry woven with the threads of serene landscapes, rich culture, and unforgettable moments with Lena and Sophia. Today, our final day, was a gentle echo of the beauty we've encountered, a quiet promise to return someday.

Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at the Backwater Cafe. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the sweet scent of local spices, a comforting start to a day of reflection. We savored the South and North Indian dishes, a reminder of the culinary delights we've enjoyed throughout our journey. Sophia, of course, made a beeline for the pancakes, while Lena and I enjoyed the traditional Kerala breakfast options. It was a perfect family moment, a simple pleasure made extraordinary by our surroundings.

After breakfast, we set out to explore the scenic viewpoints that dot the backwaters. Our first stop was the Kalathara backwater view point. The drive there was an experience in itself, winding through narrow roads lined with lush greenery and glimpses of the tranquil waterways. As we arrived, the view unfolded before us like a painting – a vast expanse of water reflecting the clear blue sky, framed by swaying palm trees and the distant silhouettes of local boats.

Sophia was immediately captivated, pointing out the various birds that soared above the water. I took the opportunity to capture the scene with my camera, trying to preserve the serene beauty of the moment. Lena simply stood in quiet contemplation, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It was a moment of shared appreciation, a silent acknowledgment of the natural wonders that Kerala has so generously offered us. I managed to snap a few family photos with the backwaters as our backdrop, memories we'll cherish for years to come.

The journey may be ending, but the memories will forever flow through the backwaters of our hearts.

Next on our itinerary was the Kadamakkudy Islands View Point. This location offered a different perspective, a panoramic vista of the islands scattered across the water. The islands, lush and green, seemed to float on the surface of the lake, creating a mesmerizing landscape. We spent some time simply taking in the view, letting the gentle breeze and the sounds of nature wash over us.

We took a leisurely stroll along the pathways, appreciating the rich biodiversity of the region. Sophia was particularly excited to spot a few colorful butterflies flitting among the flowers. It was a reminder of the simple joys of travel, the unexpected discoveries that make each journey unique. As we walked, we chatted with a local fisherman who shared stories of his life on the islands. It was a brief but insightful encounter, a glimpse into the lives of the people who call this place home.

For lunch, we decided to try Swargam, a charming cafe known for its traditional Kerala cuisine. The restaurant was nestled amidst the backwaters, offering a stunning view of the lake. The decor was a delightful blend of local artistry and modern aesthetics, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. We were greeted with genuine hospitality, a testament to the welcoming nature of the Kerala people.

We indulged in a variety of local delicacies, from fragrant biryanis to fresh seafood dishes. The flavors were bold and vibrant, a true celebration of Kerala's rich gastronomic heritage. Sophia, surprisingly, enjoyed the fish curry, a testament to her growing palate. Lena and I savored every bite, appreciating the authenticity and the care that went into each dish. It was a culinary experience that perfectly captured the essence of our journey.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began its descent, we decided to treat ourselves to a relaxing drink at Vembanad, Kumarakom Lake Resort. This bar, known for its seafood and coastal cuisine, offered a rustic ambiance and stunning views of the sunset over the backwaters. We sipped on refreshing cocktails, watching as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect ending to our final day in the backwaters.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to the Lemon Tree Vembanad Lake Resort, where we had reservations for dinner. The resort was located along the Vembanad Lake, offering stunning views of the water. The restaurant, Citrus Cafe, had a diverse menu, and we all easily found something to enjoy. The staff was attentive, and we had a lovely meal reminiscing about our favorite parts of the trip.

After dinner, we took a final stroll along the lake, savoring the cool night air and the gentle sounds of the water. The stars twinkled above us, casting a magical glow on the backwaters. It was a moment of quiet reflection, a time to appreciate the beauty and the serenity of this incredible place. As I looked at Lena and Sophia, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for this shared experience, a memory that we will cherish forever.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Berlin. While I'm eager to return to the comforts of home, I know that a part of me will forever remain in the Kerala Backwaters.
