Family Adventure on Ishigaki Island: Exploring Japan's Hidden Gem
Day 3: Starry Nights and Island Lights: A Day of Discovery on Ishigaki
Explore Ishigaki Island's beauty: Oganzaki Lighthouse views, celestial wonders at the observatory, and local flavors with family.
Beacon of Light and Celestial Sights
Today was a blend of coastal beauty and cosmic wonder, a true testament to Ishigaki's diverse offerings. From the rugged cliffs of Oganzaki Lighthouse to the star-studded skies above the island, it was a day filled with breathtaking views and fascinating insights. The local cuisine, as always, added a delicious layer to our exploration.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mugonka. Olivia and Ethan were keen to try a Japanese breakfast. I opted for the pizza. I know, Italian on a Japanese island, but I am who I am. The handmade dough was delicious. After breakfast, we hopped in our rental car and headed towards Oganzaki Lighthouse. The drive itself was lovely, with lush greenery on either side of the road. I must admit, I did miss the sunglasses I left back in Kelowna. Note to self (again!): always double-check the essentials.
As we approached Oganzaki, the landscape transformed into a dramatic coastal scene. The lighthouse stood tall and white against the blue sky, a beacon against the rugged cliffs. The views from the top were simply stunning. The waves crashed against the rocks below, creating a mesmerizing symphony of nature. Ethan, ever the photographer, was snapping away, trying to capture the essence of the scene. Olivia and I just stood there, taking it all in. The wind was strong, carrying the salty scent of the sea. I tried to imagine what it must have been like for sailors of old, relying on this very lighthouse to guide them home.
The northern side of Oganzaki has wild, rugged landscapes with jagged rock formations, including Fuchibui Rock. The southern side offers tropical charm, with pandanus trees and natural beaches. It is a must-visit destination for breathtaking views.

After spending a good hour at Oganzaki, soaking in the views and the salty air, we drove towards the Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory. I've always been fascinated by astronomy, and the chance to visit an observatory in such a unique location was too good to pass up. The observatory is located on the peak of Mt. Maesedake. The drive up was quite the experience, with narrow winding roads. I think Olivia closed her eyes a few times, muttering something about my questionable driving skills. But we made it in one piece, and the views from the top were well worth the slightly nerve-wracking drive.
The Ishigakijima Astronomical Observatory is home to the largest optical and infrared reflector telescope in Kyushu and Okinawa. Its location on Ishigaki Island allows the observation of many stars that cannot be seen on Japan's main island.
We took a tour of the facility, and even though the tour was in Japanese, the visuals and the sheer enthusiasm of the staff made it engaging. Ethan, with his keen interest in science, was particularly captivated. He peppered the guide with questions, which, thankfully, the guide was able to answer with a smile and a nod. I learned that the observatory conducts observational research on solar system celestial bodies and transient astronomical events. They also hold stargazing parties and other events.

I was reminded of a quote from Carl Sagan:
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.
After our cosmic journey, it was time for lunch. We headed to Yaeyama Zenfu Kokkara, a restaurant known for its authentic Okinawan cuisine. I was eager to try some local dishes, and Yaeyama Zenfu Kokkara did not disappoint. The restaurant had a charming, traditional atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We ordered a variety of dishes, including some rare specialties of the Yaeyama Islands. The flavors were bold and unique, a testament to the region's distinct culinary heritage. Olivia particularly enjoyed the Goya Champuru, a stir-fry dish with bitter melon, while Ethan devoured the Rafute, braised pork belly. I was partial to the Okinawa Soba, a hearty noodle soup with a rich broth. I even sampled some Awamori, the local rice liquor, which had a distinctive kick. It was a truly immersive culinary experience, a perfect complement to our day of exploration.

With our bellies full and our minds buzzing with new knowledge, we decided to do a bit of shopping. We stopped by Don Quijote Ishigakijima, a variety store that seemed to have everything under the sun. Ethan was on the hunt for some anime merchandise, while Olivia wanted to pick up some local snacks and souvenirs. I was just curious to see what treasures I could find. The store was a sensory overload, with colorful displays, quirky products, and a constant stream of announcements. We spent a good hour browsing the aisles, discovering all sorts of oddities and delights. Ethan managed to find a rare manga, Olivia stocked up on Ishigaki-exclusive Kit Kats, and I stumbled upon a selection of local craft beers that I couldn't resist. It was a fun, chaotic experience, a perfect way to end our afternoon.

As evening approached, we made our way to Umaru for dinner. This restaurant is known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious Ishigaki beef. We started with some local appetizers and then ordered the Ishigaki beef teppanyaki. The beef was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, a true delicacy. The service was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration, a culinary highlight that we would remember for a long time.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Ibaruma Heart Rock and the Blue Cave. Another day, another adventure. I am already looking forward to it. I am also looking forward to stopping by Island bar CANOPUS for a beer.
Reflecting on today, I am struck by the sheer diversity of Ishigaki Island. From the rugged coastlines to the starry skies, from the local cuisine to the quirky shops, there is something for everyone here. It's a place that engages all the senses, a place that leaves you feeling both relaxed and invigorated. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. And as I sit here, sipping a local beer and writing these words, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Ishigaki Island, you have truly captured my heart. The weather has been ideal in July with sunny days. We will need to make sure to reapply sunscreen regularly.
I am looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings.
