Farewell, Pelion: A Day of Literary Pilgrimage and Natural Serenity

As our Pelion adventure draws to a close, Lena and I decided to soak in the last moments of this enchanting peninsula. Today was a blend of culture and nature, a fitting end to our Greek escape. We started our day in Skiathos Town, exploring the legacy of a celebrated writer, and ended it amidst the tranquil beauty of a hidden spring.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Akti. Perched perfectly in the heart of Skiathos, overlooking the bustling harbor, Akti offered not only delicious food but also a stunning view. The gentle sea breeze and the sight of sailboats bobbing in the marina created a serene atmosphere. Sipping my coffee, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had here in Pelion. It's moments like these, where you can simply sit and appreciate the beauty around you, that make traveling so rewarding.

After breakfast, we set out to explore the Home of Alexandros Papadiamantis. Papadiamantis, a renowned Greek writer, spent much of his life capturing the essence of Skiathos and its people in his stories. As a software developer with an appreciation for history and culture, I was eager to learn more about this literary figure. The house itself, a modest two-story building, stands as a testament to Papadiamantis' simple life. Built by his father in 1860, it's a prime example of local folk architecture.
To truly understand the spirit of Skiathos, a visit to the Papadiamantis Museum is not just recommended, it's essential.

Stepping inside felt like stepping back in time. The rooms were sparsely furnished, reflecting the writer's ascetic lifestyle. We wandered through the rooms, admiring family photographs, handwoven textiles, and the desk where Papadiamantis penned his 180 short stories. It was fascinating to see his personal items, including his inkstand and pen, preserved as a reminder of his dedication to his craft. Lena, with her keen eye for detail, was particularly drawn to the old chest and decorative items that offered a glimpse into everyday life in the 19th century. The house exuded a sense of quiet domesticity, allowing us to imagine the rhythms of daily life within those walls.

Leaving the Home of Papadiamantis, we drove towards the Spring Of Manas, a hidden gem nestled in the lush landscapes of Pelion. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the countryside. As we approached Portaria, the village closest to the spring, the air grew noticeably cooler and fresher. The Spring of Manas is a captivating natural attraction, surrounded by verdant landscapes. The sound of crystal-clear water flowing created a soothing backdrop, inviting us to pause and appreciate the serene environment. We strolled along the paths that meandered through the area, enjoying the peaceful ambiance. The spring was surrounded by wildflowers and towering trees, with the water gently flowing over rocks and pebbles.

For lunch, we chose 1701 Wine Restaurant. Nestled in the picturesque village of Mouresi, the restaurant exuded warmth and sophistication. The menu featured authentic Greek cuisine, with a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. We indulged in traditional dishes, expertly crafted to reflect the rich flavors of the region. Of course, we couldn't resist trying some of the local wines, perfectly paired with our meal by the knowledgeable staff. The combination of exquisite food, fine wine, and breathtaking views made for an unforgettable dining experience.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Meintani (Niki's Taverna) in Zagora for dinner. This charming taverna is known for its warm hospitality and traditional Greek dishes. The cozy environment, with its wooden decor, made us feel right at home. Niki, the owner, focuses on quality and uses free-range products, which added to the authenticity of the meal. We savored the flavors of the region, enjoying dishes like kleftiko and fresh salads. The taverna offered a breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea and Mt Pelion, making it a truly special place to end our day.

After dinner, we decided to check out Alter Ego Rock & Blues Bar in Volos. Although a bit of a drive, we heard it was a vibrant spot with a great atmosphere. The bar was adorned with nostalgic photographs of legendary musicians, creating a cozy and inviting space. The music selection ranged from jazz to rock and blues, ensuring there was something for everyone. We enjoyed a couple of cocktails, chatted with the friendly staff, and soaked in the lively ambiance. It was the perfect way to cap off our final night in Pelion.

As I reflect on our 12-day adventure, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we've shared. Pelion has captured our hearts with its stunning landscapes, charming villages, and warm hospitality. From hiking scenic trails to exploring hidden beaches, we've created memories that will last a lifetime. And while I'm a little sad to be leaving, I know that we'll carry a piece of Pelion with us wherever we go.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back home to Berlin. While I'm looking forward to returning to our familiar routine, I know that I'll miss the laid-back pace of life in Pelion. But as they say, all good things must come to an end. And I'm grateful for every moment of this incredible adventure.

“The journey, not the arrival, matters;” a quote that perfectly encapsulates our time in Pelion. It wasn't just about seeing the sights, but about immersing ourselves in the culture, connecting with the locals, and creating memories together. And that's what truly matters.

Until next time, Pelion!
